Crop Circles and UFOs - The Truth we seek

Since this article hit national headlines abroad a few days ago, two very important statements have been made on the subject in Great Britain.

* The Conservative Party leader David Cameron says: “We will publish secret UFO files if I become Prime Minister”.

* Nick Pope has appeared on International media with a statement about highly classified instructions issued to RAF pilots to engage and if necessary shoot down UFOs.

I have been researching crop circles for more than 25 years (bio). During this time I have interacted with British authorities on the subject at many different levels of government and Royalty. Ive been reporting on these interactions during lectures, on tape and in books since 1989.

Recently a new and disturbing development has occurred. Officials are rewriting history as to the level of government interest and involvement with the mystery through the release from the National Archives of select or altered Military of Defence (MoD) documents.

I first saw this in effect with an article written by Nick Pope, (left) formerly head of the MoD-UFO project.
In his article Nick Pope claims that there was not substantial official interest or investigation in the subject of crop circles by the MoD, Houses of Parliament, county police or the Royalty. In his article he specifically
claims that:

• The MoD did not have an in-depth or lasting interest in the subject and he debunks many of the claims
I have made regarding my government level interactions. Pope sites the Hansard record from the Houses of Parliament as evidence that the Military have not worked with any civilian research group on the crop circles mystery. I have proof that this is patently untrue which I will provide in this article.

• Pope claims there was no involvement with county police and shows an official record from Hampshire and Wiltshire police chiefs stating that their officers were not carrying out any official investigations. This is misleading if not outright false and I will provide evidence to that effect.

• Pope goes on to say that “he had to deny” any interest of the Queen or other members of the Royal
Family in the crop circles. I will provide personal letters I received from Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip which show Pope’s statement to be false.

• Nick says that the use of a government ‘D’ notice was never used to stifle media coverage of crop circle events specifically those at Operation Blackbird. . A ‘D’ notice is a government enforcement order to cease media transmissions of material considered to be a threat to national security. Well known television and radio presenter Dave Barrett’s experience to the contrary is included in this article.

• Pope’s claims have been reinforced with the recent release of MoD National Archive records under an extension of the Freedom of Information Act. The media reported extensively on the records release and some articles can be seen here. I know that these records are incomplete and in some cases false and will present the evidence in this report.

I don’t believe the timing of Nick Pope’s article and the MoD records release are coincidence. I can think of only two explanations for the incomplete and wrong information in both. Perhaps high level inter-governmental sharing of information on the subject has been on a need-to-know basis and not only the public but Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Nick Pope were being misled. Or perhaps the government is trying to rewrite history and downplay their interest and involvement in the subjects of crop circles and UFOs using Nick Pope to open the door to this approach. I wrote to Nick on September 15, 2006 disputing his version of events.

To change the record on government involvement in the mystery requires that the record on my own involvement with the government be changed as well. Fortunately I have proof of my claims. I can demonstrate interest and interaction with local authorities in Wiltshire and Hampshire counties, the MoD, Nick Pope at the UFO Project Department, members of Parliament and the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet, and the Royal Family.

Following is a synopsis of each with links to the evidence.

Local Government in Hampshire and Wiltshire Counties.
I was employed in local government at Test Valley in Hampshire from 1974 to 1990. This proved to be a door
opener into the Hampshire and Wiltshire Police authorities (and also into central government) who readily shared with me information they had collected on crop circles. At the time, late 1980’s and early 1990’s, crop circles represented a completely new situation and were drawing massive numbers of people into the countryside. It would have been negligent if government per say, local and national, was not fully informed on the extent of the phenomenon.

I was actively investigating crop circles, was an electrical engineer, came from local government and was a credible affiliate. I worked with co-operative individuals at very high levels within the Hampshire and Wiltshire police aerial surveillance operations. The pictures on this link are all photographs given to me by these individuals in an official capacity.

Nick Pope has stated that any photo’s taken from military helicopters were taken by interested individuals and not under the directive of police headquarters. This is simply not true. The police in Hampshire provided me with a direct telephone number to the commanding officer of the flight control operation at Lee-On-Solent. I was given this access because I was receiving daily reports of newly arrived circles from private aircraft and helicopter pilots, the public, farmers, and others.

I passed selected reports to the flight control operations who then directed official aircraft to take immediate photographs for their use. Our joint cooperation was
reciprocated with my receipt of their aerial photographs. With this arrangement many times the authorities were present to record a crop circle formation before the public and in some cases even the farmers were aware the formation existed. Occasionally I would be on site to witness the arrival of the aircraft I had requested, as can be seen in this photograph (left) This level of involvement is far above individual interest and demonstrated unprecedented co-operation with private research efforts, as the times dictated, contrary to Pope’s assertion or the official statement in Parliament.

Military Involvement

Throughout the late 1980’s and early 1990’s military aircraft over crop circles were commonplace and witnessed by all who visited the circles. Military aircraft were witnessed taking photographs and maneuvering over the formations regularly. I received extraordinary cooperation from military airbases throughout South Central England in my research as did other researchers such as George Wingfield. For example Wingfield revealed that he was part of a series of photographic expeditions on aircrafts provided by the Army Air Corp at Middle Wallop airbase for the purpose of taking close-up aerial photographs of crop circles in the Andover and Marlborough areas of Hampshire and Wiltshire. A senior member of the House of Lords was on board at least two of those flights.

I am aware that much of the skepticism about my personal claims has arisen due to the lack of cooperation given by the military to some other crop circle and UFO research organizations. I can only reiterate that my local government position may have given me a slightly more credible position however I think the real reason was that it never occurred to me that they would not be helpful.

Consequently I was respectful, cooperative, persistent and fully anticipating reciprocation. This is considerably different than the poorly masked hostility in many approaches to the military of this kind. I find it ironical that in the 80’s and 90’s I was accused of
being a government cohort due to the help I was given and now I am accused of making up government involvement! How the wheel turns. I am openly accused on various websites of carrying out CIA or Rockefeller instructions to down play the crop circle and UFO phenomena when the exact opposite is the truth.I will be releasing an article on this in the future. Here are some of the many instances of military
presence at the crop circles and assistance provided to me with evidence to support my claims.

1) In the summer of 1985 Busty Taylor discovered and photographed a set of five circles near Longstock in
Hampshire. By the time Taylor landed his aircraft and arrived at the site for ground analysis military aircraft
were already overhead photographing the formation. The farmer of the field believed the circles were formed by the activity of military helicopters as his fields were in close proximity to the Middle Wallop army airbase and low level helicopter activity occurred frequently.

The farmer lodged a complaint at the airbase which instigated an investigation led by Lieutenant Colonel Edgecombe (left). The official report was sent to the MoD. Nick Pope plays down this report as an action taken to placate the public.

However, after Lt. Col. Edgecombe’s investigation I telephoned the airbase asking to speak with him. During
the course of our conversation I was invited to visit the airbase for further discussion. My visit resulted in being given a copy of Edgecombe’s official report and photographs of the site, the same reports that was also sent to the MoD and was dismissed by Pope. I agreed not to publish the report at the time but am doing so now. For the first time the report and photo’s can be viewed here.

I am releasing this to demonstrate that Pope neglects to mention several important aspects of this report. He
fails to mention that the Colonel was on board the helicopter that investigated the circles and had with him the Aircraft Accident Investigations Officer who were both baffled by what they saw. The report states that they
could not find any tracks into or out of the field and one particularly inexplicable feature was a circle remote
from the tractor tram lines which also had no tracks to it. They even question if it was caused by a UFO. The report ends by saying none of those present could offer a reasonable explanation for the circles but they were
certainly not aircraft down wash.

I am not using this event as evidence that these crop circles were not man-made or that the military believed
they were extra-terrestrial in origin. I am simply demonstrating that there was interest in the subject at very
high levels.

2) In the first week of September 1987 I was in conversation with the flight control tower at the Boscombe
Down top secret air establishment requesting information on any new formations reported by their pilots. I was in the habit of regularly checking with the airbase for this type of information. At this time they informed me of a set of five circles seen from the end of the runway. The circles were in Amesbury near Stonehenge.

In pursuing this report I was permitted access to a meeting with the head of the photographic division where personnel thumbed through serialized negatives to show me crop circle photographs they had taken. Several were extremely valuable to me as they added significant information to the details of our own site work. For example one photo was taken one hour prior to our own visit to the same site. In their photo the swirl pattern in the circle was counter clockwise and the plants were laid flat. In our photo of the same circle the swirl was clockwise and the plants were tufted. A change of this sort had never been witnessed before. You can see these two photo’s here. I left Boscombe Down gifted with large prints of photographs that were of interest to me and they can be seen here.

3) The military were involved with several high profile surveillance efforts, the most prominent being
Operation Blackbird in the summer of 1990. This was a three week long high-tech surveillance stake-out overlooking fields near Bratton and Westbury in Wiltshire. This was determined to be the most likely site for recording a crop circle being formed. There was a high degree of media coverage of this operation.

• The Royal Army Ordnance Corp, at the Deepcut army base provided the best military night vision cameras available to be used during Blackbird. The equipment, costing thousands of pounds, can be seen on this Link to Blackbird photo’s.

• The army also provided personnel with technical expertise to help with the surveillance camera operations which can be seen in the pictures on the same link as above. The two officers provided were deployed from TRG Wing, HQ CO4, and TRG BN at Depot RAOC, in Blackdown Barracks, Deepcut, Camberley, Surrey.

• Unbeknown to the public there was another covert operation being conducted by the army at Silbury Hill just 19 miles away from Blackbird. This site was deemed the second most likely spot to record a crop circle being formed. The army procured footage of their operations which I asked for and was given at the end of our coordinated efforts. The CPR Archive contains the copies of this army footage. I am currently transferring all of this video data from PAL and NTSC format onto DVD after which it will be made available via my website. Check back for this top quality evidence in the near future. Also coming soon is an important article describing the significance of this site in regards to UFO and crop circle activity.

• While we maintained a public presence at Blackbird with many media cameras present, army personnel were using special image intensifier cameras along with mobile recording shoulder packs at the second covert site. Night-vision recordings filmed a team of hoaxers as they walked into the fields within touching distance of army personnel hidden in the crops around them. The army also filmed a bright pulsing object over the field to the south of them during the covert surveillance operation. Stay tuned to the web site for the photographic evidence of both as the video transfers are completed.

4) In October 1989 the B.B.C. aired a program titled Squaring up the Circles. The program focused on finding the source of the crop circles. Crop circles had appeared on MoD land in Heytesbury near Warminster over a period of years. During the production of Squaring up the Circles, the BBC went to this piece of property and enlisted the help of the military to uncover the source of the circles. The army sent a team to make a crop formation (left) which was then compared to the ‘real phenomenon.’ The formation they made had none of the classic features; it was messy, poorly constructed, asymmetrical, had broken and damaged
plants, and entry and exit points were clearly visible.

Next the military used a gazelle helicopter to hover at
very low levels over the wheat field to observe crop damage caused by the down wash. Again, the classic features were not recreated. CPR Archives hold a copy of the BBC 2 program ‘Squaring up the Circles, presented by Caroline Hall, aired October 27, 1989.

The Aerial surveillance photographs of crop circles seen in this report were taken by theBritish Ministry of Defence (M.o.D.) from the Boscombe Down secret air base, the British Army based at Middle Wallop, Hampshire and the Police in Hampshire and Wiltshire counties. Ground surveillance photographs were taken by the Royal Army Ordnance Corp, based at Deepcut, Surrey. To view them start

MoD

Many people may not be aware that the MoD has a departmental position that specifically responds to and
investigates UFO’s and related phenomena. My initial inquiries at the Ministry of Defense were about UFO
sightings that occur in association with crop circles. I was specifically interested to know more about UFO reports received at Boscombe Down air base as I was interacting with officials at the airbase in regards to the ground phenomenon. I also wanted to look at the crop circle-associated UFO files that had been processed and stored in the National Archives (left) in London.

Shortly after I began my research I met with Ralph Noyes (left) who formerly was head of the UFO project at the M.o.D. Ralph Noyce was promoted to Under Secretary of State, a high level position in the British government. We had several meetings to discuss reports I had submitted to the government, one of which suggested that some form of intelligence was behind some of the circles. When he fully retired from government he was fascinated with the crop circle mystery and the UFOs seen near them and became a
founding member and director of the Center for Crop Circle Studies (CCCS).

Noyes position in the UFO project at the MoD was some years later taken by Nick Pope. I had my first meeting with Pope in 1993 and corresponded with him also around 15 times during his time in this position.

On July 27, 1993 I attended a meeting I was instrumental in setting up between Nick Pope and professionals from the U.S. who were interested in sharing information to better understand the UFO subject. Present at the meeting in London were myself, Nick Pope, Dr Steven Greer and Dr. C.B. Scott Jones, former US Naval Intelligence and advisor to United States Senator Claiborne Pell, head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

While Pope towed the official line, over time it became obvious that what he believed personally was different. While he was spokesperson for the MoD on one hand, his personal view seemed to be that UFOs not only exist but are a real concern to national security. He also stated he believed they existed in large numbers. Just before Pope retired from the MoD, I provided an introduction for him to speak at his first public lecture on UFO’s at the New Hampshire MUFON conference in 1995 organized by Pete Geremia.

At that conference Nick stated that as many as 5% of UFO reports investigated by the full apparatus of the MoD
were thought to be totally unexplained – he went on to say they were probably extraterrestrial.

In Nicks article he decries involvement of the MoD with crop circles. However Nick himself while working at
Sect 2A at MoD offered to mobilize aircraft into the Salisbury Plain ‘military zone’ at my request for UFO or
crop circle reports should he feel the request was warranted. I never asked for such assistance from him but
did use local assistance as detailed above.

Despite this extensive history Nick Pope underplays any lasting involvement or interest of the MoD in crop
circles. I find this extraordinary.

Prime Minister and the Margaret Thatcher Cabinet

Much controversy has been generated by my claim to have provided reports to the Margaret Thatcher cabinet. During the late 1980’s I was asked by a retired army Captain to provide data to Dr. Fisk the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Margaret Thatcher government to be the basis of reports sent to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for the Environment.

These reports were to help the government assess the
significance of the phenomenon. The reports and my involvement in creating them have been acknowledged
in official letters which can be read on this link.

The Captain, whose name I am with-holding, visited my home in Andover, Hampshire and asked if I would provide specific details on my research conducted over the previous six years. At the time the general consensus was that crop circles were made by an unknown natural process, a conclusion I felt was limited.

I discussed my findings in depth and stated my belief that there was more than a hint of ‘intelligence’ at work in the fields, and I did not mean human. We also discussed the unusual orbs that had been seen by multiple witnesses. I saw an orb for the first time as I waited for Dr. Terence Meaden to arrive at a circle site near Winchester, in 1986 (future article, check back to the website).

I provided my findings and additional data to the Captain. His staff prepared the subsequent reports (link) which were sent to Nicholas Ridley, M.P., Secretary of State for Environment in Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet. These were routed via Lord Tony Dulverton. Copies were also forwarded to the Ministry of Defense, the Queen, the Governments Science advisor Dr. Fisk and Richard Ryder at the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF).

According to the recently released records from the MoD, once in the late 1980’s and once in the early 1990’s, the public and the Prime Minister were told by the Home Secretary in the Houses of Parliament that the police forces of Hampshire and Wiltshire and the MoD had no interest in the crop circles and were not at that time filming or investigating them. This denial was repeated in Parliament and recorded in Hansard. As I stated in the beginning of this report, the ground was prepared for todays UFO/crop circle research community to accept this deception with the pre-publication of Nick Pope’s article alleging the same.

Information and evidence I have presented here demonstrate that despite these claims to the contrary the military and police were deeply interested and engaged in the phenomenon.

Parliament

During the time I was providing data for official reports I also increased attempts to have questions raised in
Parliament. Other UFO researchers were doing the same such as Jenny Randles and Paul Fuller as mentioned in Nick Pope’s article. Months earlier I sent our first book Circular Evidence to Sir David Mitchell, M.P. (Member of Parliament), which he acknowledged. Eventually I was able to arrange a meeting with him and took him into the fields to view a formation (left). I showed him the features we were investigating and explained the difficulty in identifying them as man-made formations. I also demonstrated why they did not appear to be randomly positioned as expected if nature, i.e. whirlwinds, were responsible.

After a second meeting with Sir David Mitchell (link) he became convinced the government should be involved in researching the details and photographic evidence he had seen. He promised to discuss the phenomenon with other ministers (link). He was instrumental in ensuring that my reports reached the Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Geoffrey Howe. His efforts also led to a meeting with Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, David Trippier. Discussions between Mitchell, Trippier and Trieppier’s Chief Scientific Advisor led to the decision to approach the Natural Environmental Research Council to request an official research interest.

I was touched and honored to receive a glowing reference back from Sir David and later letters from him and Dr. Fisk to confirm progress in the government’s willingness to proceed down the road of funding for official research into the crop circles. This avenue was closed down due to the fact that there were no PhD scientists who had studied the phenomenon and written a peer reviewed article at that time. A later article written by William Levengood and published in the peer review journal Nature was not sufficient to reopen this door, however for Nick Pope to say there was no interest or intent is misleading in the extreme.

While time has moved on and the hoaxing has continued to grow, there are still compelling facets to this phenomenon that I believe constitutes new grounds to re-open this avenue for investigation.

Royal Family

There has been much debate as to whether or not the Queen (left) and Royal family were interested in the crop circles. Since many circles appeared on their own land it would be surprising if they were not at least curious. In fact the Queens interest in the subject was evident in the late 1989 when she put Circular Evidence, on the Queen’s Summer Reading list. Pat Delgado and I also received an official request for the Circles Phenomenon Research Newsletter to be delivered regularly to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace. On October 31st, 1989 I received a letter from the Duke of Edinburgh thanking me for keeping him informed and wanting to be kept up to date with the research into the crop circles.

Nick Pope states that he “had to deny allegations that the Queen and Margaret Thatcher had expressed interest in the phenomenon.” I wonder how Pope explains this personal letter I received from Her Majesty the Queen which completely puts to rest his public denial that she and the Duke had any interest in the phenomenon. In this letter the Queen’s private secretary conveys the Queen’s personal long-time interest in the crop circles.

In 1991 the same retired Captain who requested my data for the Prime Minister relayed a request to me to show Prince Charles around one of the formations near his property. Prince Charles wanted me to explain the features we were convinced at the time were of a genuine phenomenon. Although a plan was set for such a meeting to take place an unfortunate leak to the media scuttled our meeting.

To this day I do not know how secret plans for me to show Prince Charles (left) around the crop circles was intercepted by The Daily Star, a British national newspaper. Our plans were reported in the June 28, 1991
publication resulting in their cancellation. Prince Charles had crop circles on one of his estates as did other
members of Royalty and his interest was high. Although he could not enjoy first-hand exposure to the circles,
Jonathan Deane Montigue, son of the 3rd Baron Montigue of Beaulieu accompanied me around the circles for two days. Jonathan’s home is Beaulieu Abbey, which was dissolved by King Henry the VIII.

In addition to my direct knowledge of Royal intrigue in the subject I also have indirect evidence that demonstrates the widespread nature of their interest. A friend of mine who sits in the House of Lords and is a close personal friend of the Duke gave me a copy of a letter the Duke sent to him from Balmoral Castle in October 1989. In this letter The Duke confirms his personal interest in not just the crop circles but in associated UFOs activity. He refers to specific events that took place next to a formation at Cheesefoot Head in Hampshire which our mutual friend witnessed – the place where I saw my first circles in 1983. I also received a copy of a letter from the Duke regarding an event you will read about later in this article.

In the letter you can see the degree of interest the Duke has in the circles and associated phenomena.

In another correspondence between the Duke of Edinburgh and a friend of his the Duke sent a copy of Circular Evidence to his friend with a note mentioning his theory regarding crop circles. He believed at the time that it was possible that the causative energy creating real crop circles is closely aligned to that which Uri Geller works with. I have revealed these personal letters, minus names, to demonstrate that the Royal family did not have just a
passing interest in the subject but spent time with each other theorizing and considering the phenomenon as many other ‘croppies’ were doing at the time. Remember that the head of state in the United Kingdom is the Queen. She holds the highest position in the British Government.

Government ‘D’ Notice

A British Government D notice (according to Pope, no longer in use today – I will come back to this) was/is a military directive to stop publications and radio or television transmissions on grounds of national security concerns. Several years after Operation Blackbird I learned from a well known radio and television presenter Dave Barrett that such a notice had been issued during live transmissions from Operation Blackbird. At the time Dave Barrett was with GWR radio based in Swindon, Wiltshire. Dave Barrett was back in the studio as the GWR outside broadcast vehicle (left) attempted to transmit’ live’ from Blackbird when he received the D notice to stop. The notice was received as four military training aircraft were flying at low level directly over the heads of Pat Delgado and I as we were entering the center of the newly discovered crop circle which had occurred on the edge of the surveillance parameters. In the center of the circle we found an advanced
Astrology board and concluded that somehow we had been tricked. Many people insist there was more going
on here than we knew, including the soldiers who attended the site.

When I met Dave Barrett several years later at a conference in Bristol, England he said: “I have for so long wanted to ask you what really went on there that day for the government to take such drastic action.” I have no idea what instigated military interference with the media news. I suspect that the second covert operation occurring simultaneously with Blackbird may yet reveal important information regarding this. The story of what I know regarding the second covert operation at Silbury Hill has never been told and will be revealed in an upcoming website article. The purpose of here is to dispel Nick Pope’s allegation that no such ‘D’ notice was given.

Nick Pope states: “I was quizzed by several crop circle researchers who asked for details of what the MoD
knew about the phenomenon. Some demanded that we take action to investigate matters, while others clearly
thought we knew all about it, and were covering up. New theories and allegations abounded and I was often on the defensive. I had to refute the bizarre idea that the formations were caused by the testing of space-based laser or directed-energy weapons, and dispel suggestions that media coverage of the issue had been stifled by the use of D notices.”

I recently contacted Dave Barrett via email to confirm that GWR radio did in fact receive the ‘D’ notice. He recalled the event and replied that although his radio station sent a radio vehicle to the site “they were prevented from seeing the circle and the ‘D’ notice stopped us reporting it.” Dave Barrett authorized me to quote him. Back for a moment to Pope’s claim that the government no longer issue ‘D’ notices. According to this recent report from The Times of London dated September 3, 2008 that appears not to be true either. The Times themselves were served a D notice when they tried to publish concerns about the Taliban in Afghanistan.

International Government

My research into crop circles has sent me around the world and into the company of former high level officials in the US and Russian military and also the NASA AMES research facility, among others. My discussions leave me to believe that governments from many countries have been concerned with the question of both UFO’s and crop circles, regardless of what the public has been told. Here are some highlights from years past:

• In 1991 I was part of a press conference in San Francisco with Russian Cosmonaut and pilot, Dr. Colonel Marina Popovich (left). With authority from the Russian government Dr. Popovich released photographs taken during Russian space missions of UFO’s near the moon of Phobos.

• I was asked to make a presentation at Arlington in 1992, which was attended by President Bill Clinton’s
chief scientific advisor, Dr. Arlan Andrews from the office of Science and Technology Policy. Our discussions after my presentation were amongst the most enlightening in regards to the UFO that I have ever had. Its obvious to me that it’s not the individuals that are holding back the day of open co-operation and ultimate advancement of our knowledge, it’s a piece of paper on which is written a single word ‘Policy’. An agreement made years ago by scared people who took it on themselves to protect themselves as well as the rest of us from the step beyond to an inhabited universe where ultimately we will go.

• In 1993 a subgroup at the United Nations, The Society for Enlightenment and Transformation (S.E.A.
T.), headed by Mohammad Rammadan (left) organized a symposium on UFO and related subjects. In addition to myself Dr. Rauni Luukanen-Kilde, a former chief medical doctor from Iceland, and Dr. John Schuessler, Deputy Director of Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) an aerospace engineer with the space station Freedom, were the speakers. This symposium made it clear that there is International governmental interest in the phenomenon as witnessed by the current number of governments who are releasing their top secret UFO files.

• In 1997 I spent 10 days at an International Science congress in Hakui Japan. Also present was Dr.
Richard Haines (left) from A.M.E.S. research facility. We spent much time discussing theoretical models for the construction of crop circles.

• In 1998 I was involved in several meetings with Retired Colonel Philip Corso (left) who was part of
President Eisenhower’s National Security Council from 1953-1957. Corso told me that in the course of his
professional career he was shown pictures and reports of crop circles and witnessed them being passed to the National Security Agency (N.S.A.) for study. This was confusing to me because I didn’t know crop circles were under investigation as early as the 1950’s or perhaps he maintained a government presence after the Eisenhower years. This was never explained. Corso went on to reveal that Prof. Allen Hynek was involved in analyzing the reports, later confirmed to me by an N.S.A. operative. Prof. Hynek was an astronomer and ufologist who acted as scientific adviser to UFO studies undertaken by the U.S. Air Force in three consecutive named projects: Project Sign (1947-1949), Project Grudge (1949-1952), and Project Blue
Book (1952 to 1969).

Colonel Corso also told me that the N.S.A. held the view that the circles were a form of communication. I later received diagrams from an N.S.A. operative of complex crop circle designs found in Michigan. I could easily see why the N.S.A. would view them as communication.

• In 1997 through 1999 I received funds from Laurence Rockefeller in the United States to accelerate
specific research projects. This included a two year investigation into claims of circle hoaxing in southern
England. My conclusions were not popular. I reported that of the circles studied in southern England during that two year period, 20% represented a genuine mystery while 80% were man-made. My television announcement of these results and the subsequent distortions of truth will be the basis of an upcoming article.

Some of the research I conducted with Rockefeller funds are part of the Rockefeller Initiative.

UFO and Crop Circle

Crop circle reports have been accompanied by UFO sightings since the earliest records of the phenomenon. However many UFO researchers did not want evidence of this association in the public domain. Some did not want it because the emphasis on crop circles took the focus off their own UFO research. Others did not want the association because they believed that ultimately the crop circles would be proven man-made and they were afraid this would taint ‘legitimate’ UFO research. Still others were part of government disinformation.

Several times during the course of my research I was actually warned not to link UFO’s with crop circles. I
was warned by prominent members of the British UFO Research Association (B.U.F.O.R. A.) not to mention the two together in media interviews. When I did not comply BUFORA sent letters to the MoD warning of concerns over my and Pat Delgado’s claims regarding crop circles. These are referred to by Nick Pope and in the recently released MoD UFO files at the National Archives.

I was also warned by CIA operatives working at the Pentagon to avoid making this link. I wonder why there is such concern to acknowledge that there are many UFO crop circle connections. I have compiled some reports that the MoD investigated or were apprised of in the early years of my research. The following report is one Pope speaks to directly in his article.

On the 22 of October 1987 a very bizarre event occurred in the air over southern England. A Harrier TR5 vertical take-off jump jet disappeared during a test flight over the Salisbury plain military zone in Wiltshire. As the jet approached Boscombe Down airbase, radio contact went dead and the aircraft went missing. A full land, sea and air search was launched.

The Harrier jet was eventually spotted by an American military aircraft flying from South Wales. The aircraft pilot spotted the jet flying on a set course and moved in along side it sending a radio report of his finding. The canopy of the plane was shattered and there was no pilot flying the Harrier indicating the pilot had been ejected out of the plane through the canopy. The media named the Harrier the Ghost Plane. The plane eventually ran out of fuel and crashed 300 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. The
plane had flown over three series of crop circles and the body of the pilot was later found very close to a set of circles. Although the presence of circles was not that unusual in that area at that time of year, a dead pilot
was.

On November 2, I received a phone call from Squadron Leader Graham Davis which was followed by a phone call from Squadron Leader Pike, both from Prospect House division at the MoD. They were asking me to supply information about unusual effects ascribed to crop circles. I shared associated electromagnetic anomalies and unusual aerial phenomena. They were investigating all possible explanations for the strange series of events including why the pilot was ejected from his craft through the canopy. An explanation was never found and the verdict was left opened.

Nick Pope states, “I had to deny that the 22 October 1987 crash of a Harrier aircraft was caused by energies
associated with crop circles and that these energies had caused the spontaneous firing of the pilot’s ejector
seat leading to the man’s death (the body was found in Wiltshire not far from where some crop circles had
appeared in the summer).”

It is odd to me that Nick Pope is in a position to make a pronouncement of what did not cause this accident
when the official inquiry could not. I am certainly not suggesting the crop circles or forces involved with the
construction of some of them had any thing to do with these events. However I find Pope’s denial interesting.

Was he not aware that the investigation had included this possibility? Or was he trying to divert interest away
from the reality that official investigators did in fact pursue this line of inquiry, as any thorough examination
would.

The lessons to learn from all this is that blind loyalty and trust in Government much like the financial
institutions, big business and even many religions has not served us well. Our apathy in not challenging these
institutions has allowed distortions of truth due to mind-sets and agendas resulting in wasted precious time,

Remember that it was not just the public who were deceived. Questions in the House of Parliament reveal that Prime Minister Thatcher was deceived as can be seen in Hansard. Deception and spin is now the expected government reaction to questions they don’t want to answer so why should we wonder that public servants would lie to us as well as to our senior representative - The Prime Minster and head of state, the Queen. It does not get much more concerning than that. You may be asking yourself now WHAT IS THE TRUTH
AND WHAT DO THEY KNOW? Or more importantly why do they need to deny interest?

I think this horrible mish-mash of lies and deception is not all that it appears. Personally I like Nick Pope and
don’t think he is purposefully misleading but has simply not been given all the facts behind what he was asked
to represent as MoD spokesperson. I might be wrong, but I suspect this approach was arrived at by their fear of what might be behind the circles and UFO reports. What was revealed is their disorganization, lack of know-how and even pure disinterest in keeping the public informed .

The advancement of human consciousness comes out of evolving experience and modified existence and that
means science and knowledge must take us forward on a foundation of respect and factual reporting - that is
NOT what we have had here. We have facts being distorted to reflect a mind-set thus subverting growth.

We have to be able to imagine our future, embrace the truth and emotionally grow into it. Man, along with nature and the unknown universe are each playing a roll in closing the end of a cycle of the earths recent history and is preparing the window for our future. We all have a part to play in this time and therefore we must all be talking to each other with HONESTY.

Nevertheless the croppies were sure that some of the formations must be genuine, citing various “unexplained” features. More recently they invoked new “scientific” evidence in that regard, such as that provided by “the BLT Research Team” in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The “B” and “T” are circle “researchers” and “L” is a semi-retired biophysicist, W.C. Levengood. He finds a correlation between certain deformities in plants and their locations within crop-circle-type formations, but not control plants outside them (Levengood and Talbott 1999). However, correlation is not causation, and there are other objections to his work (Nickell 1996a). As well, more mundane hypotheses for the effects-for instance, compressed moist plants steaming in the hot sun-appear to have been insufficiently considered.

Crucially, since there is no satisfactory evidence that a single “genuine” (i.e., “vortex”-produced) crop circle exists, Levengood’s reasoning is circular: although there are no guaranteed genuine formations on which to conduct research, the research supposedly proves the genuineness of the formations. But if the work were really valid, Levengood would be expected to find that a high percentage of the crop circles chosen for research were actually hoaxed, especially since even many ardent cereologists admit there are more hoaxed than “genuine” ones (Nickell 1996a; Nickell and Fischer 1992). For example, prominent cereologist Colin Andrews (2001) has conceded that 80 percent of the British crop circles are manmade; yet Levengood claims his research “suggests that over 95 percent of worldwide crop formations involve organized ion plasma vortices . . .” (Levengood and Talbott 1999).

Levengood and others who postulate crop-stamping, ion plasma vortices have to face the fact that those remain unrecognized by science. They owe their imagined existence to George Terence Meaden, a former professor of physics who took up meteorology as an avocation. His book The Circles Effect and Its Mysteries (1989) is still revered by many cereologists. Alas, however, he merely attempted to “explain” a mystery by creating another, and-humiliated by hoaxers-eventually retired from the scene, conceding that all of the complex designs were fakes (Hoggart and Hutchinson 1995, 59).

Nevertheless, many circles aficionados have begun to photograph supposed vortex effects which, curiously, resemble some of the same photographic anomalies that are the stock-in-trade of ghost hunters. For example, in her Mysterious Lights and Crop Circles, credulous journalist Linda Moulton Howe (2000, 137, 255) exhibits a flash photo taken in a crop circle that shows a bright “mysterious arch with internal structure that seems to spiral like a plasma.” Unfortunately for Howe (erstwhile promoter of cattle mutilations and similar “mysteries”), the effect is indistinguishable from that caused by the camera’s unsecured wrist strap reflecting the flash (Nickell 1996b). As corroborative evidence of this mundane cause, the bright strand-like shapes typically go unseen by the ghosthunter or cereologist, only appearing in their snapshots.

Again, Howe (2000, 169-176) shows several photos containing “transparent spheres” that the croppies call “energy balls,” “light orbs,” “atmospheric plasmas,” etc. They are indistinguishable from “orbs” of “spirit energy” typically seen in photographs of graveyards and other “haunted” places and that sometimes appear in snapshots as UFOs. Skeptics have demonstrated that these globelike effects can be produced by particles of dust, water droplets, and the like reflecting the flash (Mosbleck 1988; Nickell 1994; Burton 1999). Other simulators of paranormal “energy” in photos include lens flares (the result of interreflection between lens surfaces), bugs and debris reflecting the flash, and many other causes, including film defects and hoaxes (Nickell 1994).

Sometimes, however, “hovering balls of light” and other “energy” effects are reported by eyewitnesses, though not only in the vicinity of crop circles (Haselhoff 2001; Howe 2000). These too may have a variety of causes including pranksters’ parachute flares (”Flares” 1999), various misperceived aerial craft and other phenomena (such as ball lightning), false claims, hallucinations, etc. In some instances, small lights observed moving about cropfields at night might have come from the flashlights of the circle makers!

It appears that for the foreseeable future the crop-circle phenomenon will continue. At least it has moved from the level of mere hoaxing-”a form of graffiti on the blank wall of southern England” (Johnson 1991)-to represent an impressive genre of outdoor art. The often breathtaking designs (best seen in aerial photographs, like the giant Nazca drawings in Perú) are appreciated not only by the mystery mongers but by skeptics as well. Indeed as reliably reported (Hoggart and Hutchinson 1995), skeptics have helped to make many of them!

Reporters Note: Matt Blanton was on Flight QF72 on October 7 2008 when it plunged suddenly twice. He contacted me after reading this article about the incident and possible UFO connections and was thankful that at least someone had confirmed his suspicions regarding the event.

Matt seems to be a truly decent, selfless guy, of a rare and vanishing type that once made Australia great. He has never asked for any money for writing his story and these are his words and thoughts not mine. If we wanted to do the ‘Tom Biscardi’ he could have sworn he saw little green men in the cockpit as well as football stadium sized UFOs circling the plane and talked of contracts and payments to commit passengers to secrecy. Never once has Matt mentioned whether or not he was injured in the event and I haven’t asked. He has scanned and sent me all relevant documents to verify his being on the plane and subsequent Lotto win: Pictured below. This is his account:

My girlfriend and I were travelling together when this happened. While we boarded the plane I noticed that the plane’s name was Kununurra, which is where my dad was living at the time, which can be seen on the letters Qantas sent me (attached). Flying conditions seem to be perfect.

We fell asleep as soon as the plane took off, as we were still quite tired from our flight from London. The we woke to something, we weren’t quite sure what it was but obviously the plane had plunged for the first time; luckily we had our seatbelts on. While trying to figure out what had just happened I looked at the navigation tracking channel in front of me and noticed that our position was just off the coast of WA, basically we had just hit land after flying over the Indian Ocean for most of the journey.

Then the plane plunged a second time and I remember being stuck to my seatbelt looking down on to the floor. Everyone began to scream, the man behind me was swearing. While still a bit sleepy I began to put things together and realised we were not doing so well, plus there was a huge hole in the roof above the lady’s head in front of me.

The flight attendant was obviously hurt from the tone in his voice. I looked outside and there was not a cloud in the sky. I looked at my girlfriend, and she said, ‘what’s going on?’ I replied ‘I dunno’. Sections of the roof fell off onto the floor; I noticed everything that was in my front seat pocket had been tossed a few seats over. It was as if the whole plane was a well shaken cocktail. The galley was totally destroyed, every single plate and cup smashed. A few oxygen masks had fallen around the area due to heads and people smashing into them I would imagine.

After realising that something had happened I began to try and calm myself but it was quite hard, the flight attendant was not helping as he seemed very nervous and was trying to attend to the lady in front who was bleeding but everyone even the flight attendants had been ordered to put their seat belts on. Lots of people were bleeding, the lady in front seemed to be barely conscious, so the flight attendant administered oxygen with the help of the lady’s husband.

The captain came on the speaker and announced that something had failed and that were making an emergency landing and that he would have us on the ground in 15mins. However, I had the navigation channel in front of me and it took about 30mins to land of which during that time I thought I was going to die thinking that maybe he can’t land the plane due to some damage.

The plane was going around in big circles, decreasing its altitude at a very slow pace. This made me very nervous, but finally enough we landed. However I wasn’t relieved when we landed as I had feelings of anger and helplessness, noting that that there’s nothing you can do when something like that happens.

We had to wait on the plane while paramedics came in and assessed the situation. They figured that it would be better if the uninjured people came off first. So we all got off the plane, and as we did I noticed that the area towards the back of the plane was more damaged that that of the front. It seemed like nothing had happened in Business Class and I found that really strange.

We waited 11hrs there at the base and well into the night before two more Qantas jets came to pick us up and take us to Perth. No one could take pictures or leave the building we were in under strict orders from government personnel controlling the base. 5 passengers refused to get on another plane.

During the whole time army men driving white 4WD’s dictated who could go where and when. Even when it was time to get on another plane and leave they wouldn’t let the plane take off and we had to wait seated in the new plane for about 40mins or so. When we got to Perth I found it weird that they Qantas gave us 400 dollars each in envelopes marked economy. Some people have blamed Qantas for the way they handled the situation, but I think it probably had more to do with the army dictating their response.

After all the Investigations it seemed to me that no conclusions have been reached as to why the plane plunged twice. They say it was system failure but that does not help me sleep any better. Another fact that doesn’t help me sleep better is the Malaysian airlines flight that had the exact same incident a few years earlier and was not covered in great detail by the media.

After finding out that it was a secret naval base coupled with the other oddities I mentioned in a previous email I believe it had something to do with whatever top secret things they were doing as I mentioned before and after reading your article about a possible UFO connection I am certain of this.

Prior to boarding the flight I bought some unusual gemstones and crystals, for me at least these will always be connected to the incident. A few days after the event I won lotto (low five figure amount) and couldn’t help being reminded of the incident as I looked at the letter notifying me, addressed to Matt Blanton of Kununurra (The name of the airplane).

I also wondered if there was a lesson for me, at least, in all this. If we humans took the time to travel by land or water to our destinations would we gain a greater appreciation of our environment and therefore work to preserve it more?

I have researched a lot of these things out of interest since I was at university and as a young man of my generation I feel that many young people feel this way and believe that there is irrefutable evidence out there to suggest that governments cover up and deny a lot of important issues like UFO activity. Awareness is growing and it won’t be long until everybody in the world will have access to the truth, one way or another.

On the 7th of October 2008 the passengers on Qantas flight 72 from Singapore to Perth experienced something that may well haunt them for the rest of their lives. As the Airbus A330-303 was travelling over the isolated town of Exmouth in Western Australia the pilots received a faulty message and auto-pilot was automatically disengaged. The plane climbed 60m before pitching down and plunging 200m in a terrifying 20 seconds in an uncommanded manoeuvre. The pilots steadied the plane however a few minutes later the craft again plunged another 120m in 16 seconds.

Passengers were pinned to the ceiling and flung throughout the craft. There were 74 injuries, some relatively serious. The plane then made an emergency landing at the mysterious nearby Learmonth Airport.

Soon it was revealed that a similar event had taken place at almost the exact same spot three years prior. Malaysia Airlines Flight 124, operated by a Boeing 777-2H6ER flying from Perth to Kuala Lumpur on 1 August 2005 also received faulty indications and the plane pitched upwards and stalled. Autopilot was disengaged and proved unusable for the remainder of the flight.

Geoff Thomas of Australian Aviation referred to the similarities of these two events as an ‘extraordinary co-incidence’. But are they?

Operating in the area are two rather secretive military bases. One of these:The Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt has been already mentioned extensively in relation to the incidents. The Naval Communication Station was built in 1963 as a joint US-Australian initiative. The station’s purpose is to provide VLF (very low frequency) radio transmissions to submarines and ships of the US Navy and Royal Australian Navy operating in the Indian Ocean. The station consists of 13 radio towers. With a transmission power of 1000 kilowatts it is the southern hemisphere’s most powerful transmission station. The station was originally totally under US control but is now mainly under Australian control and curiously currently operated by Boeing Australia Ltd.

The Australian transport Safety Bureau, on investigating the incidents, has said that interference from the station might have caused the incident, although concluded that this is unlikely.

Less is known about the RAAF Base Learmonth near Exmouth. This is one of three bare bases in Australia and is only maintained by a small caretaker staff during peacetime. Access is restricted and it is difficult to ascertain what the place is currently being used for.

Of even more interest is the nearby Learmonth Solar Observatory and in particular the Learmonth Magnetic Observatory situated within the complex. Comprising a collection of white buildings, a suite of optical telescopes, parabolic dish antennae, it is also just outside Exmouth. The faculty exists purportedly for the prime purpose of monitoring the sun however other projects undertaken here according to Government websites include planetary defense, ionosphere (Basically the upper atmosphere) monitoring and meteor detection and tracking.

‘RDOS’ which stands for for Rapidly Deployable Optical System is the name given to all acitvities here involving planetary defense and the tracking of moving objects near the earth atmosphere. Pete Worden of NASA’s Ames Research Centre set this program up after travelling to Exmouth. Dr Clifford Rhoades and Major (Dr) Paul Bellaire of the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research helped with the program as well. ‘Project Wormwood’ which specifically tracks moving objects, purpotedly meteors, near earth’s atmosphere is part of this program.

The facility is jointly managed by the IPS Radio and Space Services which is part of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and the United States Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA). There are a total of 15 personnel employed on site performing observation, analysis, maintenance, secretarial and management functions. Observatory staff are drawn from IPS Radio & Space Services and consist of two space weather physicists and one administrative officer; as well as 11 personnel from AFWA providing analytical and maintenance support.

The RAAF Base Learmonth and The Learmonth Solar Observatory were not mentioned in any of the official investigations. The fact that Exmouth is a well-known UFO hotspot was also ignored, not surprisingly. This brings us to our final question, what is the true purpose of all these bases?

For starters, the Learmonth Solar Observatory and the magnetic observatory enclosed within it are stated as being used for planetary defense, ionosphere monitoring and meteor detection providing the perfect cover for the tracking of Alien UFO’s in space and within the upper layers of our atmosphere. Countless reports of UFO’s being detected within the ionosphere by the world’s space agencies have come to light. The fact that the facility is managed by the US Air Force is most interesting.

The Learmonth Magnetic Observatory might be the most mysterious facility of all of these. Hardly any information can be found out about it. Ufologists have routinely ignored magnetic observatories and their possible role in monitoring UFO’s but to get an idea of what role they might play have a look at this (Specifically question 1) and this, they may surprise! The Canadian government has admitted to using magnetic observatories to monitor UFO’s as part the highly classified ‘Project Magnet’.

Richard Hoagland, ex-NASA employee and space archaeologist media personality, released some spectacular NASA video footage that was shot from an American space shuttle mission in September 1991and accidently picked up by a ham radio operator. Subsequent to this intercept and its public distribution by the radio ham, NASA initially encrypted and then totally ceased further shuttle video transmissions. The video shows a bright UFO travelling near earth’s atmosphere and then two energy beams shooting from earth towards the craft making it turn 180 degrees and travel away from earth at incredible speed. One beam has been confirmed to have come from Exmouth. As mentioned above NASA set up the planetary defense program here. The US Air Force Office of Scientific Research who also played a part in the set up of this facility has been at the centre of UFO research for decades.

Numerous local farmers and residents have reported brightly coloured UFO’s in the area over the years and one well-known report in 1991 also involved multiple witnesses seeing beams being shot at these craft.

It should be also noted that Western Australia, especially the more northern area, is just about the most sparsely populated area on the planet yet at the same time serviced by a modern infastructure. Western Australia is politically stable, very wealthy and rich in minable resources making it an ideal location for top-secret high-tech operations.

Are the three stations at Exmouth scanning the skies for potential threats from space or are they merely part of a galactic traffic control system informing UFO’s wanting to get a closer look at humans and earth of whether they have official clearance to come down here? Is The Boeing Company using the base to familiarize itself with space travel protocol and procedure so as to one day expand into galactic travel?

Gadgetry from one or all of the bases seems to have interfered with the airplanes systems. Perhaps Boeing or Airbus have fitted their planes with experimental UFO reverse-engineered technology and this was picked up by the bases? Does an actual UFO base exist in the area which mistook the airplanes for alien craft resulting in procedures being activated to guide them down to a landing spot?

The recent surprise admittance to an All News Web reporter by senior Australian politician Malcolm Turnbull that anything to do with UFO’s down under is subject to ‘The highest classification and levels of secrecy’ means we won’t be getting any answers in the near future and we may never find out what really caused two airplanes to malfunction in the same way in the exact same spot.
