I want to mention one of the all-time remarkable moments in guitar history, which did not involve anyone actually playing the instrument at the moment:

TRUE STORY, there was a reception at Buckingham Palace a few years ago and Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck were introduced to Her Majesty. First she asked one of them “and what do you do?” and then asked the others “oh, are you guitarists, too?” The she asked Clapton how long he had been playing the guitar and he responded “oh, around 45 years now.” She really had not the slightest idea who they were, not a clue. Guess royalty doesn’t have much interest in music of rock ‘n’ roll barbarians.

1. Randy Rhoads from Ozzy Osbourne. Songs: Mr. Crowley, Revelation (Mother Earth), Dee, Diary of a Madman. Also see some of his stuff from his years with Quiet Riot.

2. Iron Maiden Songs: Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, Power Slave... heck, most of their guitar work is some of the best ever done. The syncronized solo’s that they are famous for is mind boggling. I’ve always been partial to the material used in the World Slavery Tour of 1984.

3. Queen. Songs: Some of the licks from the “Flash Gordon” sound track are quite memorable though the movie was nothing to write home about (except for Aura... sigh). My all time favorite though simple is “We Will Rock You.”

4. Van Halen. Anything in the early years (”1984” and earlier) with one exception. I’ve always like “Amsterdam”.

5. Michael Fath. Album: Sonic Tapestries.

You’ll note that there is little new stuff that I like. Most of the music now days is vamped on effects equipment and computerized. I’m old school. I appreciate true talent and metal solo guitarists are some of the most under rated and un-appreciated musical artists that have ever lived.

Mike
