Besides Wat's Dyke being older than Offa's Dyke, it turns out that no one had actually scientifically dated Offa's Dyke, and when an opportunity arose, Offa hadn't been born when at least long sections of his dyke was built. That particular tidbit hasn't gone done very well with the hidebound English.
