Usually will weaken before landfall, but Gus may be moving too fast. My guess is a 4 at landfall.

Yeah at first, I thought for sure that the Navy would go by whatever NHC said.. apparently not the case.

What is your take on surge, how big?

“come ashore in a way that minimizes (given the situation) the surge”
That would be fast. Where I live we have wind tides (i.e. surge) all the friggen time. Two days of steady SW 15 will pile water up over my dock. 100 MPH for two hours does nothing.

I agree, but I don’t think the locals there will go for it.

I hope you are already on the road by now, because at this point the roads are probably clogged

I'm not positive but sometime if you pay by credit card you can take the matter up with your card holders(visa, MasterCard) and get some relief that way.

I gotcha, how risky a trade is that? Is it likely that the gas can be shipped in from elsewhere?

I saw a floater for that last night. Do you know, there are some libs out there who actually said they hope a Gustav hit will coincide with the convention, just so people can see the gladhanding that goes on with republicans while people are in an emergency? I saw them myself. I would not be surprised at all to see the RNC postpone. Floridians didn't scream that the DNC should postpone because Fay left them with flood aftermath, but newspapers will shout that McCain, Palin and Bush are out of touch and "partying while New Orleans drowns."

Rita passed well south of NOLA. But she was so big, and passed at an angle of 285 to the south, that she pushed enough surge into NOLA to re-flood the city.

It was like it bounced of the Island of Youth (think that’s the name). Now it has nowhere to go but across land.

I'm sorry but better there than here. (E TX)
I was an evacuee for 4 weeks after Rita. Everywhere I went and spent $$, I was "contributing to a Katrina victim." It really started to rub us the wrong way...we couldn't live in our house either!...and our damage was done by Mother Nature and NOT the fault of decades of corrupt LA politicians and government.
Katrina really hit MS...my heart bled for those people!
