“Uh, except John Glenn was NOT the first American in space. Alan Shepard was. (Although some claim Chuck Yeager went into space in the X-15 long before Shepard’s flight.)”
“The author spins an interesting tale, but he needs to get the basics right.”
No the writer was technically correct. Al Shepard’s flight was suborbital.

What caused you to respond to a post from 2008? I always get curious about that..
To: Frantzie
Anyway, every reference there is to Alan Shepard refers to him as America's
"first man in space", suborbital notwithstanding. I maintain the author of this thread is wrongo.

Glenn was the third astronaut and they made the biggest deal of him of all the Mercury astronauts. Why? First orbital flight. Glenn was a creepy bas*ard anyway while Shepherd was a good guy.
People made comments about the article to discredit the kids based on the correct oribtal comment and the LEDs comment which was wrong. The author probably was sloppy on the lights the boys used.

A couple years ago, NPR posted audio of Gagarin as he said his last words in flight. I don't know if the audio is still online somewhere or not.
But here is the NPR story about it.
