What do you think about a Kid’s Corner with one Header Graphic for each month. Then no changes for the entire month. We would need someone to monitor it once a day for any inappropriate material.

We would also need to disable or monitor FReepmail from that thread.

Great idea. John would probably disable freepmail for that thread, or probably for those who would be “special” registered youngsters. If they are registered in the regular way, they would still be open to freepmail I guess.
There are several web sites that could be linked to the thread that are targeted to young children. Nick Jr. is a good one. Games, videos, etc. All directed toward learning.

INDEPTH: VE-DAY
Victory in Europe

The news flash reached Canada at 9:36 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on May 7, 1945: Germany has surrendered unconditionally.

This time the news was real. There had been two earlier reports; one was erroneous and the second officially premature.

On April 28, as the war continued in Europe, as Russian and American troops met on the River Elbe, there were rumours from San Francisco, the site of the conference leading to the founding of the United Nations.

The second report came on the morning of May 7, when there was a flash from The Associated Press saying Germany had surrendered.

The military surrender agreement for the German armed forces was signed at a schoolhouse in Rheims, France, at 2:41 a.m. local time on May 7, 1945, by Colonel General Gustav Jodl, chief of staff of the German army; Lt.-Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, chief of staff for the Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower; General Ivan Susloparov for Russia; and General Francois Sevez for France.

But there were no confirming bulletins from other news organizations – Allied headquarters had ordered the news withheld for 24 hours, even though German radio had announced the surrender.

That news did reach Canadian soldiers in Holland; church bells rang across the country, and the troops took part in celebrations in Utrecht and Amsterdam.

On May 7, 1945, within minutes of a CBC bulletin that Germany had surrendered unconditionally, crowds flooded onto Rue Ste-Catherine in Montreal. (CBC Photo/Montreal Herald)With the premature news, celebrations had already started across North America; people gathered at Toronto City Hall and in small towns across the Prairies, as well as in New York and other major cities across the U.S. The parties dampened down when people heard that the news could be wrong again.

At 3 in the afternoon EDT, the BBC announced that British Prime Minister Winston Churchill would address the Empire at 9 a.m. EDT the next morning. Later, Washington said President Harry Truman would speak to the American people at the same time.

Something was definitely up, and six hours later the celebrations started up again when the German surrender was confirmed.

When Churchill went on the air, it was afternoon in the U.K. but first thing in the morning in Canada. He told the audience, We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing, but let us not forget for a moment the toils and efforts that lie ahead. Japan, with all her treachery and greed, remains unsubdued. He then declared Victory in Europe Day, soon shortened to VE-Day.

There were official celebrations across Canada, including a parade on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, crowds filled the streets of Toronto and Montreal, there were victory parades in small towns. Times Square in New York City and Piccadilly Circus in London were packed. In Halifax, there were riots. The city was overcrowded, filled with navy and army personnel. For months there had been tension – many in the armed forces resented what they considered an indifferent or hostile attitude from the permanent civilian residents in the city. The restaurants and liquor stores in both Halifax and Dartmouth were closed, but once the celebrations began some people began breaking into the liquor stores. What began as small incidents then became widespread vandalism and looting. In the end, three people were dead, 207 shops were looted, a total of 554 businesses damaged and many arrested. Across the Atlantic, the surrender of the government of Germany was signed and ratified in Berlin at 11 p.m. local time, 6 p.m. EDT. After the ceremony, there was an official banquet for the victors, hosted by the Soviet commander, Marshal Georgy Zhukov.

In Moscow, the Soviet Union proclaimed what it called Victory Day would begin at midnight, May 9.

Fighting continued against the Japanese in the Far East theatre. The U.S. army was facing fierce resistance on the Philippine island of Mindanao, and U.S. aircraft sank or damaged 18 Japanese ships while American bombers hit the island of Kyushu.

Happy V-E Day!!

I don't know. It might be worth a try. I wonder how many kids we would have participating? I think it is a good idea if you can get someone else to take on the responsibilty of posting and monitoring the thread. I am concerned that you are already doing too much. :-(

Those are great ideas. You know, Nan, you would be a good one to oversee a Kid's Corner, but like Amy, I know you already are stretched to your limit, time-wise.

You make beautiful graphics, Mama_Bear.

Thank you. I can't take full credit for that one though. I found it already made and sort of added to it a bit. But I will take partial credit. :-)

In the Land That Made Me Me.

Uh huh......I could identify with all of it. ;-)

Like Peyton Place. I was quite young when Peyton Place hit the bookshelves, but I remember it was SCANDELOUS!! Little did anyone know how much things would change over the years. LOL

If it could be implemented, I think it would be good for FReeper kids.

Pre-teens are really interested in what the other kids are doing. This would be a site that we could keep them safe while letting them meet others online.

You are right, I could not do it. Some days, I remember why I closed the doors to Amy’s in 2005. There are not enough hours in the day. Both Amy’s and Marissa are full time jobs. ;^ )

Well, you know, you shouldn't feel you need to be at Amy's Place when you have to be other places. Real life comes first and 'real life' includes rest and relaxation in between all the obligations. :-)

I am sure I speak for everyone who posts on this thread when I say we appreciate your dedication to Amy's Place and all you do here everyday, and I don't think anyone wants this thread to be a burden for you. You can only do what you can, when you can. You take care of your family and Amy first. Amy's Place will be just fine if you can't be here. :-)

Thank you all for your feedback. Everyone likes an acknowledgement in one form or another from time to time. Here on Amy’s Place. Amy sets a fine example as the perfect hostess for her corner of FR. Thank you Amy.

I am mindful of the audience here and do my best to keep things as non controversial as possible. Almost all my presentations come from European sources and they have a much more relaxed attitude to nudity than do Americans, so I find myself being the arbiter of good taste as to what would be permissible and acceptable to the majority on here and follow Amy’s pledge to keep this a “G” rated Place.

I did notice that slide Amy, but only after I had posted it. If I had run the whole thing through before posting I could have easily removed it as was not ever germane to the theme.

I do normally run them though and check for the music or add music, set the timings or reconfigure to bring down the size so that it is reasonable for posting here. That one slipped though, as I must have seen almost a hundred presentations of nature and many of the slides do turn up over and over again.
I did run it through in its entirety after posting - was waiting for comments.

I will make sure that do my best to avoid posting anything that would not be suitable for Marissa, as I would hate for her to be mad at me.

Mama Bear, I like you graphics they are terrific, I need to get some more fonts like the ones you have. I only learned yesterday how to make animated gifs from the tools I already had. Now, with my new found skilzs, I will really be a danger to the civilized world.

Thank you, Cardhu.

When we watched the Color PP, I thought it had slipped by without her noticing, but she said, “Wait, go back. Why isn’t she wearing clothes?”

Thanks again for your beautiful Presentations.

Looking forward to seeing some of you animated gifs.

Horsepower
Ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. —Jeremiah 6:16

On a cold winter day in Michigan, a woman in labor was being rushed to the hospital when the unthinkable happened. The ambulance slid off an icy road into a ditch. A passing four-wheel drive truck stopped and tried to haul the emergency vehicle out but couldn’t get a grip.

That’s when help arrived. An Amish man driving a two-horse team stopped to offer help. He told the ambulance service that the horses’ shoes had been sharpened so they would bite into the ice. Once he hooked up the horses to the ambulance, they walked it right out of the ditch.

By today’s standards, this young mother received help from a source of strength that was old-fashioned and outmoded. But on that day, old ways helped to ensure the safe arrival of new life into the world.

Most of us wouldn’t want to return to the old-fashioned ways. But more than 2,500 years ago, Jeremiah reminded us that there is nothing more relevant than the truth of the past. Even though he was regarded as a relic of his time, he urged his neighbors to walk in the old paths of truth so that they would find peace and rest for their souls (Jer. 6:16). Today, we can still find rest and peace in Jesus, our eternal source of truth (Matt. 11:28).

Upon Thy Word I rest, so strong, so sure;
So full of comfort blest, so sweet, so pure,
Thy Word that changest not, that faileth never!
My King, I rest upon Thy Word forever. —Havergal

The old truth of God’s Word is ever new.

That would be a good idea kid's thread. I bet a lot of parents would like this. Still have to watch but we can read all. LOL Maybe, we can get our girls to chat together on FR mail or something. At least we'll know they are safe and having fun. Does Missy ever go on Neopets? I'll freepmail you later.

On some things I'm too strict. My son, now young adult in Coast Guard, makes fun of me but I can't help it. ;)

Not thrilled about this but I may have to cave with the cellphone for summer so she can reach me no matter what. Basic, no camera phone with very limited minutes. I'm still working on this. Missy sounds very popular. My daughter on only talks on the phone once in a blue moon. Whew. ;)
