Did anyone hear about this?

Does Jordin Sparks have a throat injury?

Apr. 21, 2008 07:29 AM
azcentral.com

Jordin Sparks’ show cancellations over the weekend may have been due to a throat injury, news reports say.

The “American Idol” star, 18, may possibly be suffering a vocal cord injury that is causing bleeding, according to news reports.

Sparks, of Glendale, canceled a concert at Penn State scheduled for Sunday night, an Earth Day show on the National Mall in Washington, DC set for Monday and the first night of the Alicia Keys tour where she is the opening act Saturday night, news reports say.

“Because of the risk of permanent vocal cord damage, Sparks has been ordered to strict vocal rest and will not be able to perform anywhere until her condition improves,” said a spokesman for the arena at Penn State, according to the New York Post.

read the link from Drudge.

I sure hope it’s nothing serious. Poor girl only just started her career and it was really looking good for her future with the No Air duet with Chris Brown. Kind of a break-out single.

I think this thread is read by more than just FReepers.

My hubby still takes credit for the “Kevin Bacon” game.

Thanks for posting that, Lucky. Here's a somewhat more detailed article from the New York Post. Here are the key excerpts:

Sparks, who is only 18 and about to start the biggest tour of her life, is suffering from "an acute vocal cord hemorrhage," according to officials.

A medical Web site for the University of Pennsylvania described bleeding in the vocal cord as "a serious problem . . . caused when a person who has laryngitis uses their voice at the height of infection.

"Some severe cases may require laser microsurgery."

The description of the problem as "acute" also indicates the injury may be severe.

Poor kid. I wish her well and hope she has a full recovery. Post AI health problems ruined the career of Bo Bice before it had a chance to get off the ground.

That is very serious. If surgery is necessary, it has to be most carefully done, or the poor kid could lose her voice permanently.

This happens often to young people who overuse their voices, usually when they have been pushed to perform beyond their vocal range, and when the immature voice has not been properly trained. It’s becoming more and more common with the advent of the Super-Stage Mother (or father—in Monchichi’s case.)

I’m sure that Hetty could tell us more about this.

It’s sad, happening on the eve of Jordin’s biggest tour so far.

Palladin, you flatter me — you said it very well already. I cringe when I hear youngsters “pushing” their chest voices into a higher range to creat the big, blasting sound that everyone seems to want these days. Some people have vocal cords that are seemingly made of steel and can take anything (think Ethel Merman), but most do not. And if you do that sort of thing when the vocal cords are already inflamed from illness, well, you’re asking for trouble. It really bothered me early on in this year’s AI season when everyone seemed to be sick with some unspecified flu, and yet they still had to perform. Very bad for the voice. You can also get vocal cord nodes that interfere with vocal production — I think that’s what happened to Julie Andrews.

Stage parents aren’t the only cause of this sort of thing. The theater has a culture of “the show must go on” and youngsters internalize this eagerly. Also, sometimes directors and other authority figures who don’t really understand the mechanics of the human voice put pressure on them to perform when they really, really should not, for their voice’s health.

I just hope Jordin does not try to push past this injury and come back too soon. She could indeed suffer permanent injury to her voice, which would be awful at her young age. I wish her absolutely the best. Prayers are definitely in order. Poor kid.

Those last few notes of Kelly’s Ave Maria were especially inspired.

However, her deeply plunging neckline looked odd and inappropriate, IMO.

SJ, thanks for posting that link to Kelly singing for the Pope. What a coup for her and she did an excellent job. I had to listen to a bunch if different versions of that after my mom passed away so we could select one for the funeral. We chose Maria Callas’ version. I think Kelly did just as good as Callas and that says a lot about Kelly’s voice. I wish she would allow her clear, pure vocals to shine through in her music more.

I didn't know what a monchichi was until you told me,

I've got to find a way to cash in on Monchichi mania.

But first I have to find a way to create Monchichi Mania.

Monchichi is probably aalready patented. Besides, I'm sure you'll want to tie it in to Archuleta. Monarchichi? :)

Who knows....maybe Joel McHale is a Freeper?

As much as I would love it if he were, I doubt it. I gave up The Soup for a while several years ago when they did a bit comparing President Bush to a monkey.

BUT...just in case anyone from The Soup is lurking, it would make my life if you could work "retro" into this weeks show some how. Or a Soup t-shirt. I'm easy to please. ;-)

LMAO!!! I'm gonna give him credit, too, then. I'm going to work it into a totally unrelated conversation today.

Oh, and YOU do get credit for monchichi. I'd never heard of it before, though it kind of resembles a toy my sister had as a baby. Mr. Bim

Mr. Bim scares me. I think it’s his weird human-like hands and suspenders attached to no pants.

Suspenders attached to no pants automatically deserve a visit from Dateline’s Chris Hansen.
