OK if I come over in a little bit and get muh box?
I figured I’d do you the courtesy of showering first. ;-)
Sure, come over when you want. I’ve done the same. :~)
Evenin... Is there still an APB out on me? :-)
Nope... I reported you found and accounted for.
You need to call him and tell him when your flights come in... we didn’t know if you were missing in Washington or San Francisco ;~)
Yah. I swear they don’t remember that I’m 45 years old.
I guess the answer is just not to tell them when I’m traveling.
[Sigh]
It really was something though... I mean here I’m in a tense meeting with da boss and my phone is going nuts with multiple calls from Dad and Dona and I’m thinking, oh crap, somebody is in the hospital...
But all’s well that ends well. :-)
~chuckling~ Well, sorry bout that :~)
Heheh...
Heh, well, no worries.
Its been a dang long week. I’m really glad to have a three day weekend.
Yeah :~)
Honey’s still not home, and he’s gonna have to work at some point over the weekend :~\
Wow... Must be some big stuff goin’ on.
Big new website that they’re supposed to show the client Tuesday.
Ah.
We’ve got a major redesign of our web site underway. We expect to launch in march or so. The web part it won’t be tough. But the politics of every little feature are outta this world.
Well...let’s see...my first introduction to him was when he brought in his old laptop (the one this replaced). One hinge was broken in two. I’m not sure how that’s even possible.
So we bought him this new Latitude D620, and got Complete Care. He’s had it less than a year.
CD-ROM drive got busted somehow - possibly dropped.
The pointing stick is missing its little eraser head, I noted today. Some keys were a little odd last time I used it. I can’t remember if we replaced the wireless card or not. Very obvious signs of wear all over the thing.
Today he brought it in because it wouldn’t turn on, not with just battery, not with AC. The battery lights up as fully charged when I press the test. I went to clean the contacts, though I figured if it was just the battery, it would work on AC. Noted something sticky in the battery compartment, and on further observation, a little around the keyboard, though I figure he must have rinsed it somehow...and the system is no longer wet. No confession, though.
I spoke with a tech for about an hour today, trying different power combinations, but we came to the conclusion that the MB is fried, most likely. I kinda wonder what it looks like in there. Considering all the finicky little screws involved, I didn’t want to try to take a gander at the board itself.
I’m wondering what was spilled, too. Latitudes are pretty hard to kill. He lets his son use it a lot, and he’s about six and less than careful. That’s a big part of this. ;-)
Heh...I must confess...the “Latitudes are hard to kill” statement is based on my own experience, ‘cause I’m an idjit. I once upon a time spilled an entire cup of tea into one of the little tiny Latitudes...not the X but the ones just above that. 400 series of some sort.
We dumped it out, let it dry, it booted right up, and so far as I know, it’s still ticking.
And I’m a lot more aware of beverages when I’m anywhere near a laptop these days...
I’m thinking in his case, it was either beer or apple juice or something like that.
However, kids are very good at ruining electronics, especially when they are allowed to use electronics without adult supervision.
He doesn't want to hear that he shouldn't let his kid use the computer if the kid isn't responsible, does he?
I am sooo very glad I'm not doing tech support right now ...
This is not an approach that has worked in the past, no. ;-)
This is the first truly dead Latitude I think I've seen, on further consideration. We had one at the college that was mangled in a car accident, but it still booted. I've known ones to have hard drive problems due to a bad batch, memory problems ditto...but I've never seen one this completely dead.
I'm not sure if I should be exasperated or impressed...
If someone in 1854 wanted to write a journal intended to last for two centuries, would they write on vellum? Have you ever written on vellum, or handled old vellum?
I would think average people would use rag paper for nicer things rather than vellum, no? Vellum would be used for large documents, and (I think) as part of the binding for some books.
I don’t think I’ve knowingly handled any. True vellum is skin, and it’s not like you can buy it at any old store. ;-)
There’s vellum paper, too, though, which is rag / cotton paper made to look and feel rather like real vellum.
I’m rather vague on all of this, but I’d like to know the answer!
Now you’ve got me wondering...what kind of paper was used for the first printed books? Or for older books, before the 20th century? I like nice paper, but I’d never thought before about how recently the wood type was developed.
