Don’t you just loooove insomnia?
The “I’ve been awake for five days, I am beat tired, my eyes are burning and watering, and I still cannot sleep” feeling is horrific.

It’s like your skin has suddenly developed mini-sensors that are 1000 times more sensitive than normal. And then your brain tells your eyes that something (or someone) is “there” but you don’t see it. You may hear it, though...

A constant droning in the background just below audible level that drives you nuts all night.
Or a buzzing in the skin that doesn’t go away, but isn’t nerves or muscle twitches.
Or, in my case, the longer you lay down and try to relax, the more ‘awake’ you are, to the point of feeling like you are fully awake and alert.

Ouch and ouch. I’m glad we have but a twin (double?). Much easier to deal with. Small by today’s standards, but it’s the bed my grandmother commissioned for her wedding, an exact mahogany replica of Thomas Jefferson’s 4-poster. (Unfortunately the canopy sits an inch too high for 8’ ceilings.)

Which is why I learned to just get up and start my day. I don’t like being cranky and on edge, so I’ll just stay up as long as I have to.

When I finally do manage to fall asleep, I’ll twitch like I’m falling...and wake up. And twitch. And wake up.

Yah. This bed was given to me, and the mattress is far too soft. I often wake up almost paralyzed because of the pinched nerve in my lower spine.

But until I get into my own place, it will have to do. Then, I may even spring for a fourth dining chair! LOL!

That sounds familiar.
I actually lashed out one hand the one night to grab a hold of something to stop myself.

I heard a very groggy voice respond, “THAT is NOT a handle.”
Imagine having to explain to someone who falls asleep very easily that you suffer insomnia, and experience the feeling of falling every now and then when dropping off to sleep.

Even better is when you’ve just fallen asleep, and dream you’re falling, repeatedly.
Falling down stairs, elevator shafts, off cliffs, down embankments.. etc.

Those would no doubt be the same stairs, cliffs, embankments, etc., that I “fall” off of...yep...same dream, alright.

Oooh! Ooh!
Do you also have the “I’ve fallen over a railing, I’m hovering for one second, and now I’m falling” one?
I get that one the most.

Yes, but with it comes some annoying experiences.

You mean the one where you’re “almost” flying? Yah. Sux.

Yuppers.
THEN you fall down the stairwell.

That’s it. And you wake yourself up because you’re screaming, “NO! NO!!”

I woke up half due to ‘falling’ and half due to being whacked and told to ‘leggo darnit’.

I have to rely on my own vocal cords for the wake-up call. *sigh*

Better than getting knocked upside the head a few times while you’re panicked.
