The rose, the rose,
presents a thorny problem,
for it touches the heart,
and often brings pain with pleasure,
tears with laughter,
wisdom with winsome wit.
And it seems not to care a bit,
or notice if he’s a jewel or a cur,
or that she is bold or demure,
just that they are one and not apart,
dodging life’s thorns on the stem,
if our shared mortal rose.
