Kevin Kennedy, a spokesman for Ford Racing Technology, said Toyota is changing the economics of the sport.
"Our top engineer in NASCAR was offered a 200 to 300 percent raise to go with Team Red Bull (a Toyota team)," he said.
Kennedy pointed out that Ford has eight or nine engineers working in Dearborn, Mich., specifically on NASCAR. On the smaller Truck Series alone, Toyota has dozens of engineers, he said.
Toyota also has announced plans for a $22 million research and development racing facility near Salisbury. It will have at least 40 employees, including some relocated from Toyota racing in High Point.
