Do you have a place you can just put her some newspaper down?

Gravel would probably just sink and disappear. We put gravel in front of our barn, and you can't tell it now.

I know it would if we poured it on now... I just think if I could scrape that stuff off the top and get down to some kind of hard pack that's under it?...

Have I mentioned I'm sick of ice, and I hate winter.

Yeah - I think you said something about that! Spring is coming!

I don't think she would go. She is housebroke. My problem in that area is Grizzly. He was never intended to come in, but he won't stay out without Nikki out there with him, big baby. He scratches at the patio door and cries:).

I looked yesterday for some rock salt or ice melt at the store, but of course I'm a little late...they were sold out.

Would table salt work?

Speaking of salt, Harley is drinking very very well, which is a pleasant surprise. In the Nov. cold spell I was worrying because he didn't seem to be drinking well, I started adding salt to his feed, and it seems to have done the trick this time.

Ugh - sorry about Harley... Tell him to just hang out today and not move around too much. I worry about them slipping, the ground is so hard if they fall. Curiously, Bay seems to be better on his feet than the barefooters... It's not surprising on that ouchy stuff, because I'm sure the pads help him not bruise so much, but even on the ice, he's not slipping like Cyn is.

You need a garage. One big enough for the dogs and horses:')

Oh, Becky, she sounds like my old Aussie girl. She is sooooooo arthritic and, um, overweight. I'm so glad that I don't have steps up to the house. We have tile in the house and she slide when she gets up sometimes and just hollers .. it breaks my heart.

I feel bad for your baby ..

Table salt would work, if you've got enough of it.

Ours are drinking well too. Worried for a day or two about Cyn because we hadn't actually seen her drinking, but she sure did yesterday. I think she's been good, we just haven't seen it.

We've been able to get more salt in them with the hot mashes because it dissolves in the mash and they can't just leave it in the bottom of the pan.

The ground on the gelding pasture was flat with a few patches of grass but it was packed until right before the gate. We were slipping all over the place. The mares...they had their's tore up. Ruts everywhere and deep mud but much better traction.

It's just the opposite here. Rocky who is barefoot seems to be doing better then Harley. Of course I'm not having the problems with the frozen mud like you. I've had that in the past tho, and it is a pain for them.

I worry that a bad slip could hyper extend something and really cripple them up.

In the Nov. cold spell we had, Charlie slipped on our darn front steps and pulled a groin muscle. He was down for a week, and then on a crutch for a few more days.

My back steps have no ice on them. But I can't get the dogs to come in that way. I let them out there but they wont' come around to that door to come in no matter how much I call and coax. Habit I guess. I guess it's easy to get them to go out that way because there is always squirrels out there eating the bird seed on the ground. I try to give the squirrels warning by making a lot of noise opening the door.

Well, hopefully ours are happy to stay in the barn this morning, they've got nothing to go out for, we've now got about an inch of new snow in the last hour.

I will say with the barn setup now, and them able to play musical chairs on hay position, they have better ability to move around than they had with just stalls, they make a big circuit through the barn and lean-to.

The ruts are at least better for traction... slipping's worse. How long is this supposed to last for you guys? Almost over?

I think the ice is going to be here awhile. We aren't suppose to get above freezing till Thurs, and not very much above even then. Then they are forecasting more rain/sleet/snow possible over the weekend.

We aren't freezing. High 30's. We are still expecting rain with sleet later. Seems to be moving a little slower than predicted. Mud and wind chill is what hurts here. We have a least a 10 degree difference.

slipping's worse. No kidding. Okie was afraid to walk yesterday. We would go about 3 or 4 feet and stop and get our feet then press on again.

A few pictures. Mack worked on the steps a bit. He couldn't break thru the underlayer of ice (might damage the step), but he roughed it up enough, and broke off the rounded top, so now it doesn't feel as dangerous and easy to slip off of.

And then a few of some birds I've had at my suet feeders. I can finally get some good pictures with the better zoom. A bluejay

A redbellied woodpecker.

Ah, and that's my cue to pipe up and say "No it won't, not if you put geotextile fabric under it". LOL! ;o)

I've never heard of that? But putting something under it like a fabric would work.
