That’s a great price... I don’t think I’ve ever gotten out of a vet’s office for less than a hundred bucks even when the animal was perfectly healthy!

That’s pretty much what I thought too. I know several vets around here that I felt sure it would have been well over $100. She’s a nice lady vet that has told me several times, she can make it on what she charges and knows people will be more apt to take care of their horses properly if they know it won’t beggar them to do it.

Thank heaven for Dr. Stacy:)

Good Morning.

Becky, I hope Harley is going to be ok and heals well.

Starting to get hot here again. Rain is predicted for next week. Fair starts so that will end the drought. The kids borrowed a motor home from a friend and they took that over to the fairgrounds this morning. We only live a few miles from the grounds, but they like to stay there.

Good morning.

Thanks MT.

Harley doesn’t appear to be bleeding anymore, The wrap is still on and doesn’t appear to have any seepage thru it. He’s not limping on it at all, and no swelling, so all is well:)

I woke up thru the night thinking about the penecillin and syringe I bought according to the vet...Dawned on me (why does this stuff dawn on you at 3:00 in the morning:), that the syringe is huge. She said 35 cc’s...That is a huge syringe. I’m wondering if she meant that much all together??? I’m going to have to call her and make sure. I think I remember that you shouldn’t give more then 10-12 cc’s in one site...that means 3 sticks every time if 35 is given all at once.

Anybody know if this could be right?

Becky

Man, I miss a day and all h*** breaks loose. I'm sorry about Harley although it sounds like he'll be fine - you have a great vet, sounds like :)

35cc is a lot, perhaps she meant per day and you could split it up? I think we usually are giving like 20cc at a time but yes, multiple areas if possible. Try to bring the syringe and penicillen up to about room temp before giving, it's easier that way since it's so thick.

Well, I tried calling...her office hour phones say to call the emergency #, and the message on that phone is pretty firm about it being a “life threatening” reason to call...

The guy at the feed store is not in to ask...not sure what to do, I have never given that much in one shot before.

Well, I think you could call the emergency number, all you need is a quick answer, it’s not like you’re wanting the vet to come out for some routine checkup on a Saturday.

LOL...well, it didn’t feel like all hell...I realized, and didn’t panic, that it wasn’t life threatening. The volume of blood coming out wasn’t large, it was just the way it was squirting, a constant stream.

I think Harley will be fine, and even ridable in a week or so. If it had to happen it was a good time. I’m going to be down next week with these teeth extractions, so I don’t have to fret that the horse isn’t being riden because I can’t ride. It will give the trails a chance to dry well too.

The bottle says the recommended dosage is 1 cc per 100lbs of body weight. That would mean that Harley at the most should only get 11-12, and only 10 cc’s in an injection site.

Just give him 10cc in the rump - then later today 10cc in the other side of the rump. By then maybe you’ll have been able to confirm she actually meant 35cc per day.

That’s a good idea, that’s what I’ll do.

The only thing, I’ve never given shots in the rump, always the neck...I have no idea where to give it in the rump...their rumps are pretty big:) I do alternate sides when I give shots in the neck.

Okay, I just asked Bob to make sure. He said the neck was okay, alternate sides.

OK, thanks:)

I have the first dose warming up a bit, and Hair, I’m taking pictures of the “giving a shot” process:).

I hope you never have to do it, but you should learn, you never know when you may have too:). I think giving shots a prerequisite to owning horses, especially if you keep them at home:)

If you use a new needle every time it’s really not hard, and you really don’t even know you have stuck them. I use one needle to fill the syringe and get a new one to stick the horse. They go in very very easy. It’s really not bad. Of course the needle for antibiotics looks like a darn nail. The first time I had to I figured it would go all the way thru:)

OK - I’ll appreciate the pictures!

I’ve seen so many shots, I’ve been shown how, I’ve even done vaccinations, a couple times, with first Bob then Tiff watching and showing me... it just gives me the willies and I don’t like to do it.

Heh - but I don’t think I could! - not without someone looking over my shoulder who knows... and if they’re there, and better than me, I might as well have them do it!

Maybe this can be ecurbh’s thing! I think my highest and best use is holding the horse.

When people give shots to me, I feel all woozy like I’m going to pass out.

Why do they have to be shots, anyhow? When we get hurt, they give a shot sometimes, but they send you home with oral antibiotics. Same with dogs... oral. I can do that!

I don’t know that. I know I’ve been given antibiotics in pill form, and personally I think that is a pain. They either won’t eat them in their feed, and syringing them in, they always manage to slobber some out, and you never know if they got enough, at least that’s the way it’s been for me. I’ve always prefered shots when it comes to important meds for a horse.

I have to give him some bute too today, she gave me some in powder form, and I’ve been trying to figure out what’s the best approach...on his feed, or in a syringe in the mouth...
