I think we are going to go with hard wood floors when we finally get the ambition up to put new flooring in. I’d think it would be so much cleaner, and cut down on the dust around here. You can see puffs of dust come out of the carpet with each step...even back when I was better at vacumming frequently. With the dirt roads, the dust is just a no win battle. 30 minutes after dusting you can see it building up again on the furniture. I hate it. I didn’t realize how bad it was till we got the building downtown...it never needs dusting there, never.

I think the last deep clean was when you were coming, so it’s been a year... and I don’t think we shampooed then, I think we ran out of time.

These carpets are old old too.... The landlord offered to replace them when I moved in, I actually turned him down... I didn’t want to have to worry about them. So we made a deal... old carpet, old everything, no need for a damage deposit.

They’ll be staying 10 days, though a few days of that they’ll be up visiting with some friends that live up on the Peninsula. They won’t be staying HERE, really, they’ve got a hotel. It’s been two years since we’ve seen them, last time we went to AZ.

I had the same feeling about putting down new carpet, it would be a pain worrying about. Today’s hardwood floors are easier care, and not such a worry as carpet. I can put down area rugs and just replace them as need a lot easier then recarpeting.

Well that should be a nice visit with your family, 10 days, but them NOT staying in your house:). Makes it easier and more enjoyable:).

I think next year we are going to rip up our carpet and put down laminate. I think with the dogs, etc it will be easier to maintain.

It will be nice to spend enough time with them for me to ‘know’ them a bit more... And it’ll be a nice rest and relief that they’ll be going back to a hotel for the night... particularly because I’ve never smoked around them! Ack! (makes note to remember to get some Nicorette gum)

Not sure how to entertain them for that many days.... We’ll be taking them to the volcano, of course, but not sure what else... They didn’t seem all that interested in doing the Seattle tourist thing...

I wondered, if they’d enjoy getting out in the woods where we ride... we could put them up on the horses and walk, let them ride, lead them down to the creek and back, so they could see what their son does for fun. They aren’t riders, but I’d be safe if we walked. You think that sounds corny or would they enjoy it? I think they’d like the woods, they’re from pine forest area of AZ, so it’s much different from their woods at home.

I’ve always heard that hardwood floors, unless you keep them religiously dust mopped, will wear pretty bad pretty quickly, even with the new finishes that they have on them now. Especially when you have a lot of tracked in grit or dirt. Now something like Pergo, that looks like wood but isn’t, might wear better. My in-laws put in a cheaper version of that in their kitchen, but it’s not as good. Apparently just the chairs scraping across it have put marks in it. So I guess it’d be better to fork out the money for the real stuff if you were contemplating that kinda thing.

For myself, I’ve about settled on ceramic tile in one of the stone finishes with dark grout that won’t show dirt. That stuff wears like iron. It’s colder than wood I know, but I wear house shoes all the time anyways. The only drawback is that if you drop something breakable, it’s a goner. We’ve got stained concrete in our apartment now, and I really like it, but the sealer over the stain does get scratched and worn off and would have to be reapplied every so often, so I’ve about decided against that. So there’s my miscellaneous ramblings on that subject. ;o)

Would your in-laws be able to walk the trail themselves? If they can, they might prefer to do that, especially since you and ecurbh will be walking. They might feel like kids on a pony ride otherwise. But if they can’t walk that far, it would be a nice way for them to see the scenery that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.

Yeah - they’re in good shape and they could walk it. But if they’re walking, we might as well just not bring the horses, there’s better trails for just walking.

That’s what I wondered about the ‘pony ride’ aspect, though I don’t think they’d feel secure ~not~ being led. We led them when they rode here visiting... We saddled up Bay intending to just give the kids rides, but the adults all decided to take a spin too, and I wouldn’t turn Bay loose with just anyone. The only one I didn’t lead was ecurbh’s sister in law who had ridden before. You can tell, when a rider mounts up, if they’re a horseman or not.

Yeah, but being lead around the yard at home where nobody’ll see you is one thing, but a grown person being lead on a horse, essentially out in public, would be another. It would all just depend on how self confident they are and much they care about other people possibly thinking they look silly.

Very true. Well, we’ll offer it... as well as offering a walk on a different nature trail and see what they’d like to do.

Oh, and I wasn’t recommending you letting them loose on the horses either. I totally understand about that. I wouldn’t let anybody but an experienced rider loose on any of mine either. But I didn’t know if you might want to show them one of the horse trails without actually riding the horses, just so they could see where y’all sometimes go, or not. But I see your point about there being better trails for hiking that are probably just as pretty.

Are ya gonna take ‘em up to the beach house? Maybe grill some steaks or burgers up there. That’d be nice for an afternoon. And even better if you could get a boat and do a little cruising.

Yes, we’ll definitely do that one day... so that’s two days planned (one beach, one volcano)... four days they’ll be off visiting friends, four days with nothing planned yet. A couple of those days we’ll want to just sit and visit, but we’d like a couple of other activities ready to go :~)

What about a trip out to the actual Pacific Ocean? Didn’t y’all do that with Rosie when she first came out there?

We haven’t taken Rosie out there yet (we didn’t do any of the fun touristy things with poor Rosie that we would have done if she was just visiting) but we took Overtaxed out there when she was here.

The ocean depends a little on what they do when they go up to the Peninsula to visit their friends. They live near the straights, and depending which way they go up there and what they do, they may get their fill of ocean on that side trip.

I haven’t been to the Pacific since I was a very little kid in Portland...one of these days!

Good idea, they might like that! It’s a fairly ‘civilized’ route through city and developed area, and the dinner is a nice “date quality” kind of dinner. There’s another train, The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railway, that takes a more rural route through Mt Rainier Nat’l forest, on old logging routes. We will put both in our idea bag.

Yeah, you’ve got a point there. I just can’t imagine they wouldn’t want to do the Seattle thing if they haven’t already been there. But then they just may not be into that kinda thing. I’m not much into crowds either, but I’d just have to do it just to say I’d done it. But if they have friends up there, they might have already done all that stuff. I’m just rambling.
