We got a new round bale of hay yesterday and Blade was beeing very pushy when I walked up to the bale. I stomped my feet and pointed and said back and I must have made him back up a good 10 feet before I let him stop. Then he just stood there and looked at me. Round bale forgotten, scary mom was all he could think about. I did not have to slap him this time but a year ago he was getting really pushy and I slapped him on the neck with both open hands and he learned to give me space really quickly.
That is a great action picture! She looks like she is having a lot of fun.
Good Job! Sounds like you've finally got your bluff in on him. They'll only push us as far as we'll let them. And seriously, there's nothing we could do to them with our hands, or even with a stick, that would come anywhere near what a b!tchy old mare would do to them if they got in HER space.
Putting your filly with your older mare when she is weaned is a good idea. It'll make the separation less traumatic for her, and teach her manners.
Or the grumpy old gelding! I don't like the idea of hitting them around the face, but I saw someone once at a seminar do the two hands open on the side of the neck and it was prety impressive how quickly the horse caught on. All I have to do is hold up my hands and Blade backs off.
For both of them, I think. Rose is 25 or 26. She's really acting "old" this year .. stands around and lays down more than she used to.
And while all the other horses are off grazing, she wants to stand by the paddock and stare at this filly. charm didn't like it much at first, but now she doesn't care. Rose was always a wonderful mother, and I think she is enjoying watching the filly.
Coincidently, Rose doesn't belong to me anymore, but she is pastured out at the place where I have my two horses.
The only time I make an exciption to that rule is if that face has just finished biting me, then all bets are off.
I know .. you would think she would enjoy the scratches without having to go through putting the halter on .. it's weird. And she seems to LOVE it once you've got her caught..
I really think alot of it has to do with the fact that they were stalled for extended periods, lead in and out to the paddock. Now they are loose, come and go into a lean to type stall at will .. and she's just feeling like her sh*t don't stink! lol
she's a little full of herself.
I heard THAT! We'll tackle THAT problem shortly .. because she is so used to treats, she is also very mouthy .. and has started nipping at my husband when he is leading her.
I'm telling you .. SHE IS A BRAT!!! But I do love working with her .. she's smart .. and bold .. and going to be fun.
Finished Hell. Just show me your teeth.
Awwww, how sweet! Bluebell did that the year that she didn't have a baby and Truly did. Except that they were all in the same pasture and Truly would run her off when she did it. It was like she was thinking "I want a baaaabyyyy again". The baby in question was Miss Ellie, and when she got a few months older, she actually spent more time hanging with Bluebell than she did with her mother. She'd go back to Mom now and then for a quick sip, then went back to hanging with Bluebell. It was kinda like she had two moms. Very sweet.
My knee jerk reaction is to pop them in the nose if I feel teeth.
This is a pony butt that isn't where it's supposed to be and she knows it :~)
Bay looking moth-eaten but lively... One of these days it will be warm enough to give him a bath and a clip. ~Then~ (and only then) I might bring my tack near him.
Pony giving everyone the "I'm faster than all of you" finger.
Yep. I've not been bit but come close a couple of times.
The quicker ones can get me once. The worst ones are the 'kick you on the fly' babies. :~\
She's all of 17 hands in a little body. I love looking at pictures of her.
????
She's fun to take pictures of :~) Seems to be her best talent.
The babies that will run by and kick you and take off. You can yell at them, but they're long gone and you'll never reach them to discipline them for it. I think they all go through a phase of trying that.
