The Detroit Lions defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23 in a Monday Night Football matchup on October 20, 2025, at Ford Field, marking a significant win for the Lions as they improved their record to 5-2.
The game was a high-stakes NFC showdown, with the Buccaneers entering with a 5-1 record and the Lions at 4-2, and featured a dramatic 78-yard touchdown run by Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who reached a speed of 23.23 mph on the play.
[’Civ’s remarks: The game is about halfway through the 3rd quarter, and that ain’t the score. But anyway, I don’t generally watch the games, I look for a ‘real’ highlights vid on YouTube. Helmets off to Baker Mayfield, he’s carrying an entire NFL franchise on his back, and will lead them to the playoffs. Another great move by Cleveland, running Baker out of town.]

Y'know, it's time to come out of the closet -- not the gay one, the NFL one. The posting of new topics dropped to near-nothin' sometime before kickoff time.
(my predictions from before the season, with current reality)
NFL winners of divisions, 2025
NFC North: Detroit Lions
NFC South: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFC East: Philadelphia Eagles
NFC West: Los Angeles Rams (currently 7:2 tied for 1st with Seahawks)
NFC Wildcards:
Chicago Bears (currently 6:3, 2nd due to loss to Lions; to play Vikings, Steelers, Eagles, Packers, Browns, Packers, 49ers, Lions)
Dallas Cowboys (currently 3:5:1; to play Raiders, Eagles, Chiefs, Lions, Vikings, Chargers, Commanders, Giants)
Washington Commanders (currently 3:7; to play Dolphins, [bye], Broncos, Vikings, Giants, Cowboys, Eagles)
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens (currently 2nd place; to play Browns, Jets, Bengals, Steelers, Bengals, Patriots, Packers, Steelers)
AFC South: Jacksonville Jaguars (currently 2nd place; to play Chargers, Cardinals, Titans, Colts, Jets, Broncos, Colts, Titans)
AFC East: Buffalo Bills (currently 2nd place; to play Buccaneers, Texans, Steelers, Bengals, Patriots, Browns, Eagles, Jets)
AFC West: Kansas City Chiefs (currently 3rd place; to play Broncos, Colts, Cowboys, Texans, Chargers, Titans, Broncos, Raiders)
AFC Wildcards:
Houston Texans (currently 4:5; to play Titans, Bills, Colts, Chiefs, Cardinals, Raiders, Chargers, Colts)
Las Vegas Raiders (currently 2:7; to play Cowboys, Browns, Chargers, Broncos, Eagles, Texans, Giants, Chiefs)
Pittsburgh Steelers (currently 1st place at 5:4; to play Bengals, Bears, Bills, Ravens, Dolphins, Lions, Browns, Ravens)
Those were sensible choices. In the NFC, it’s amazing how well Seattle has played. You nailed it with the Rams, who also look great. The NFC East has melted down other than Philadelphia. In the AFC, Denver has outperformed expectations, as have Indianapolis and New England, and JAX and Las Vegas have lagged. The remainder of the season is going to be interesting, to say the least.
Thanks, and ditto. More than is usual there have been surprise outcomes in games.
Scores:
Browns 24 | Raiders 10 Buccaneers 7 | Rams 34 Colts 20 | Chiefs 23 Eagles 21 | Cowboys 24 Falcons 24 | Saints 10 Giants 27 | Lions 34 Jaguars 27 | Cardinals 24 Jets 10 | Ravens 23 Patriots 26 | Bengals 20 Seahawks 30 | Titans 24 Steelers 28 | Bears 31 Vikings 6 | Packers 23
Couldn't get just four more points, could ya, Colts?
[Expletive deleted] Vikings, couldn't just beat the Packers, could ya? One of the worst-managed teams in the NFL, IMHO. But I'd picked them for 4th in the North because of it.
Baker Mayfield is carrying the Buccaneers on this back. They'll win the division, but that kind of setup doesn't win in the playoffs. Cleveland's also one of the worst-managed teams, IMHO.
If the Raiders keep Pete Carroll, they're nuts. A third team for the worst-managed list. Oh, and nice job and a cookie for the Browns.
The Bears -- I can't be happy about their narrow win, but not surprised at all that their head coach has turned them around. The other former Lions coordinator has had a much bigger job with [snicker] the Jets. Number four for the WML. The Ravens shot 'em, tied 'em to the bumper, and drove home.
I had Dallas for a wild card spot, basically no one seems to have agreed with me, but they just eked out a win against the Eagles. Seems like the latter is in the same boat as a lot of teams that burned it up last season -- uneven play, uneven results. The Ravens won but have been like that as well.
I had the Lions winning NFC North. Now I'll just be happy if they make the playoffs. Clearly the Giants are really just a few late scores away from a much better record, but Detroit is on an every-other-one performance curve, which means, fix it or miss the playoffs. Same kind of uneven play.
If the Falcons hadn't beaten the Saints they would have made themselves look even more ridiculous. With 9 losses, along with the Raiders and Jets, it's now safe to say they've been eliminated from the playoffs.
Cards are also uneven, but have done unexpectedly well in close contests.
Titans also have come on a bit later in the season, but not enough of course. Ten losses, same for the Giants. Eliminated like a witness in a mobster's trial.
I didn't pick the Bengals to make the playoffs. Number one, the management there also kinda sucks. Number two, the QB is both overrated and injury prone. Number three, the QB advocates gun-grabbing. Oh, and they lost again. They're tied with the Browns at 3 and 8, but hold that tiebreaker I think. That and $4 will getcha a cup of Starbucks (if they weren't on strike).
