Only because Hitler invaded their beloved Soviet Union, not because of anything Hitler did to the US.

The only difference was that killing 120,000 people in Tokyo took 334 planes; killing 120,000 in Hiroshima took one.

And it was the fact that we had already done it with 334 and now had the power to do it with one that let the Japanese KNOW we could and WOULD destroy them utterly. They simply had to surrender.

Just watched it on dvd. It's a movie about a war bond drive with a few action scenes thrown in. And the action scenes are mostly flashbacks featuring the flag raisers especially Ira Hayes. The movie is mostly about the Marines involved who raised the flag on their post-Iwo bond drive tour and their emotional reactions. Not what I expected. I'm sure a lot of Hollyweird lib types will love this film. I didn't. I wanted to see a movie about how the Marines took Iwo Jima. It was almost entirely something else.
