I saw Black Sabbath 3 times in the early 70's...they were the best performing band I ever saw until I saw the Stones do a good show.
They reunited back in '99 and producede a live album/CD called "The Last Supper" and it shows them in original form.
Simply AMAZING. They deserve status in the top 10 rock bands EVER.

Thanks for the links - Alvin Lee is awesome and Yngwie? Never heard of him
but thanks for the intro - was he from the John McLughlin/Mahavishnu genre of calisthetic rock/jazz?
To: LFOD
Dickie Betts did not play guitar on "Blue Sky". That's Duane Allman just days before his death.

I hear ya. You never hear that much about blues but kinda where it all started from. By the same token, if ya play around with guitar, probably into blues.
I mention SRV, cause his stuff intriqued me enough to buy a strat and from there, no going back; from Robert Johnson, T-Bone, to all the great guitar players today.

Thanks am listening right now. Mark Knopfler is so boring these days. His mumbling quiet music picking shtick is old. Just my take. I'm sure others still love him, say he's still at the top. He lost me after Dire Straits

(Bonus points for anyone who knows what Blue Oyster Cult's original name was, without Googling the answer...) "Soft White Underbelly."
Hey, I went to SUNY @ Stony Brook.

"SRV: "Little Wing" I was surprised that it took so long to get Stevie's name out there (and no, it's not just because I'm from Texas). I concur with the other remarks about Clapton, Beck and might throw in Alvin Lee and Harvey Mandel.
In person I've seen Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, SRV, etc. and other than Clapton, the tops has to be Johnny Winter many, many years ago, think it was the Vulcan Gas Company in '66 or '67. Again, other than Clapton I've never seen anything like it in person, amazin'.

The best guitar solo can only be played once.

Yes, Buckingham is probably the most underated of the guitarists. Buckingham is a genius too. I saw an doc on him on vh1. Great songwriter, musican.

My picks: Jimi's "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Chile" from the live album, In The West, THEN "Machine Gun" from BOG, Lowell George/Little Feat's "When The Shit Hits The Fan" (live), Chuck Berry's entire "Concerto In B Goode" from the album of the same name, The Rolling Stones "Time Waits For No One" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"...

I'll disagree about that song being overrated.. My only point here is Stairway is WAY overrated as an example of Jimmie Page's best guitar work. I am a HUGE Led Zep fan. I agree with your comments re Whole Lotta Love - do you have the live set How the West Was Won? What Zep does with Whole Lotta Love (for 23 minutes!) just may be the most skull crushing R&R I have ever heard anywhere.

Any thoughts on the best guitarists that you have seen or played with?

WOW! A blast from the past, I had a guitar playing college roomate who turned me on to them. They had 3 or 4 very good albums in the early 70s that never got the attention they deserved. One of the bands that have become an afterthought to me.
Thanks for the reminder.
