I have a couple from 'malignantly sharp' knife blades, but none still talk.
Thankfully.

a well-mannered blade does not speak unless spoken to.
but what of your SCARS? They are supposed to speak to you unbidden, whenever they find it needful to remind you what happens when you do something, ah, rash.

When I sharpen something, it takes on a manner of it's own.
It usually has a taste for blood, and demands at least a drop or three.
(One cut me, and I didn't even know I'd been cut.)
I, thankfully, got most of them when I was young enough to heal up to almost 100% normal skin elasticity.
However, they are still discolored lines here and there.
And, they don't speak often enough or loud enough to continuously remind me of my sharpening skill.
(Removed the pad of one finger once. All I did was forget where the edge was for a fraction of a second.)

After I posted the comment, I looked again, two of the pics were more like white oak than the other, but as I said to KP - it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

But once the stairs are there, they are there...not to be picked up over and over...

My hubby is better at identifying wood by sight than I, but then, he has an associate's degree in silvaculture...mine comes from watching many a home improvement show and working a little wood myself.

I'm finding it more difficult to identify wood since I lost my sense of smell - I have to rely entirely on sight.

Yowch.
I've been lucky to only shave off skin or make quarter inch deep divots, not nearly remove perfectly servicable parts.

well... that's the difference between "losing concentration while sharpening" and "losing concentration while practicing iaido"

It is a good thing the tips of fingers regenerate so well...otherwise, I would have lots of slice scars...

I tend to make things 'too sharp'.
And, I always warn people not to touch the cutting edge if they borrow stuff.
And they always touch the edge.

I never thought about using smell to help identify woods...although I do enjoy the smells of a number of them.
My hubby lost his sense of smell as a baby. He doesn't remember ever smelling. He only has three proper toes on each foot, and two vestigal ones...and kept falling and evidently breaking his nose as a baby learning to walk.

I never thought about using smell to help identify woods...although I do enjoy the smells of a number of them. Well, as I say, it's difficult to tell them apart at times, so smell is a useful tool.

Yeah, I remember you telling me before when I first mentioned my loss of smell.
