I would have termed it "attempted murder," actually.

Apples and oranges argument. The fact is they were in a bar. There is always a number of belligerent drunks in a bar. They were also outside the US. Engaging in any behaviour that would call attention to themselves was not terribly smart.
This tidbit from the article should make ANY American tourist very cautious.
For the first few days after the attack, St. Maarten police did little to investigate, according to the victims. But after CBS and ABC News ran TV reports, the case moved ahead.

"All St. Maartin bars are as full of "natives" as they are of tourists."
Well, a pretty good point. But there are bars and then there bars. If they were in the interior of the island at one of those places or perhaps between Ti Case and Oyster Pond in one of the places strictly for locals, they did not belong there.
Kind of like, "I put on my pink leotards, and my purple plume hat and walked into a biker bar, and said 'all you sissy bikers are pussys!'
See?

To: FormerLib
it is important to know that there are people out there who will react in that manner and that one should not do things to provoke them

Does that apply to knowing that there are people out there who will react to publishing certain cartoons of a certain religious icon as well? Should one not do that since it may provoke them? GMTA.

Actually, I would choose not to publish such a cartoon just because it accomplishes no good while being provocative. That missed my point. What I am asking is do you advocate allowing others to decide what you are allowed to do through threats and acts of violence?

Nothing I could say would ever top the pure comedy that is Taco Stein.

Actually steve, I would have published just because it would be offensive to their faith, not that I'd expect you to understand that considering some of your previous posts.

"smashed his skull with a tire iron. your defending this?"
I didn't see his comments as a defense, just a prudent bit of advice. While I agree with those who have stated that this behavior is inappropriate, I have trouble getting worked up over it. Just being honest.

Yeah, and those cartoonists "should have known better" than to antagonize the followers of the Religion Of Peace[tm].

There was no advocation in my post.
I identify and avoid dangerous situations on a regular basis. Certain companies pay me very well to do the same for them.

Either they welcome all of us, or none of us. Well, then it's settled. Some pervert has decided for me. What else can I do but obey?

I would have published just because it would be offensive to their faith So? It's their faith, not yours (I presume), and they have no legitimate expectation that you should follow its rules.
Certainly, refraining out of fear of violence is simply craven appeasement.

Beating the crap out of anyone is not something to be admired. How about beating the crap out anyone (who is not harming you) is not something to be tolerated
