He’s Elvis - campy, kitschy, bloated ’70s Elvis, relishing his breakfast of ribs and pancakes (!). He’s a caricature of a real singer, inexplicably beloved by fans. All he needs to do is start tossing scarves into the audience. Much like Elvis, he is a showman who can connect with an audience. For the finale, I expect him to take a page out of Garth Brooks’ act and fly out on wires over the heads of starry-eyed worshipers. Crowd-surfing won’t do it at this point.

What the author of the article fails to mention is this -- THE FANS MAKE THE MARKET. It isn't for one or two individuals who have their own personal opinion or likes and dislikes about a person that determines his or her success be it Kat or Taylor, IT's THE TOTALITY OF THE FANS.

This same principle applies to our politicians who keep writing laws to "FORCE" people to buy into energy efficient hybrid cars, ethanol based gas, wind farms and the rest because... heck they HATE OIL.

I got news for you,Mr. Mark A. Perigard, YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL DON'T DETERMINE WHETHER A PRODUCT, TECHNOLOGY OR A MUSICIAN WILL BE A SUCCESS... PEOPLE, DECIDING CUMULATIVELY DO AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE RESULT, TOUGH DUCK.

I've had tolive with this for a long time when all I get for music lately were the Jessicas, Ashleys, Britneys, Kid Rocks, Eminems, Kanye West, etc. of the world. For years, I complained but what can I as an individual do ? There was a market for what I personally consider CRAP.

Well, apparently TPTB at AI have just dicovered another potential market they have been overlooking consisting of millions of people like MOI in Taylor Hicks. And here we are listening to Mark A. Perigard telling us that we are wrong, that we have to once again revert to the original template of what makes a pop idol.

Sorry Mark, this ain't your year. If you want your Idol, go and try to convince millions of others to vote your way. THAT's WHAT THE MARKET IS ALL ABOUT.

So, In response to this article you posted, I found this good point from another thread....

-----------------------------------

RE: The Marketability of Taylor – we have seen many different view points on this one but I’d like to bring forth a different slant on this. ANYBODY can be marketable…for Pete’s sake, William Hung was marketed last year. We live in a world where Kid Rock can make a healthy living. As I have stated before, ELVIS, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones would all have been considered as not marketable for what WE think AI wants. But when an artist is embraced by the fans (market), i.e., has the kun-NECK-shun with fans, marketing that artist is a no brainer. You simply market the attributes that makes that artist connected with their fans.

However, take a look at past idols:

Kelly Clarkson – people think she’s the typical idol but wasn’t considered as “the chosen one” initially.

Ruben Studdard – 300 + lb. guy whose forte’ is gospel. (Geeky Clay Aiken runner-up)

Fantasia – young unwed mother with less than stellar social skills and more easy listening style than anything else.

Carrie Underwood – Heavy country maven. (Bo Bice rocker runner-up)

None of these were the cookie-cutter pop star or considered marketable, yet they won and were/are marketed. I think the argument that AI doesn’t know what to do with Taylor is poppycock. They can spin anything and will spin Taylor into the next Elvis, just watch. They know that Taylor is Gold. His marketability is his soul. I can see it, “The Heart & Soul Tour”, “Come and see the SOUL MAN”. Starting to get the picture?

I guess my next question is….we know what kind of records Taylor will make (‘cause we’ve heard ‘em) but what will Kat record? Covers of Somewhere Over the Rainbow? Sorry, but that will not be a #1 single. I just don’t see her singing an original hit song. Again, broadway/show tune performance voice but no recording star….and having to go to one of her concerts would truly be my purgatory.

I think TPTB are acutely aware of the $$$ difference between Kat and Taylor. If Nigel went to B’ham with Taylor…he saw it first hand and I assure you they see the “marketability” factor of Taylor. At this point, I believe that they would be very disappointed in a Kat victory, even though they can still sign and promote Taylor. It has been awesome to watch the tables turn right before our eyes…from Levon to now and how Taylor played the game just right. Now, I believe, he will enjoy the spoils of victory – not only the recording contract and career boost – but the personal satisfaction that the last 10 years of hard work, dedication to his dream, and sacrifice had a purpose and will finally, pay off.

Totally off topic: How stupid is Paul McCartney?!? No pre-nup?

"He has passion and kindness in his voice."

In the one video where he goes to his pharmacy, one of the customers exclaimed "I am so nervous" and he said "Why, I am just the guy that used to work here!"

Would love to hear about the work you do with teens, grania.

BTW, both Simon and Seacreast have worn Breitling watches on the show

They could have been gifts from the company. I saw some blurb on some show about hospitality suites. They said that it's actually cheaper to just give away their products to celebs and have them photographed using the product then to set up actual advertising in magazines, tv, etc. They also claim to see more of a spike in sales after a celeb is photographed using their product then after an ad campaign debuts.

TOTALLY STUPID!!

This has happened to everybody, you have a friend who starts dating someone they can't stop raving about and you can't wait to meet him/her. Then you do and you realize this is the biggest ahole walking the earth, but your idiot friend is in love. You all talk behind the friends back about how friend is making a huge mistake being with the ahole. Friend marries ahole much to everyones utter disbelief. I have to imagine that is the case with Paul. His kids hated her and you know his friend had to hate her.

The writing was on the wall from the start. She claimed not to know who he was! It's not like she grew up in some 3rd world country or something- she's English! I think they throw you out of England and revoke your citizenship if you can't name all The Beatles and know significant dates in Beatle history.

The show was actually on yesterday, but I just now found the quote about it:

On Finebaum's radio program today, Rick Karle (rkarle@wbrc.com) told Finebaum that Nigel Lythgoe was literally floored at the "Rock Star Status" that Taylor was greeted with in Bham. Nigel actually travelled with Taylor to Bham during his visit to see it first hand.

He was quoted as saying "That was the biggest hometown reception in the history of our program"

What's the deal? I know they are splitting but, is she trying to take him to the cleaners? They haven't been married that long. She shouldn't have a leg to stand on. umm well, you know.

I guess she actually offered a prenup, but he declined, at least that is the rumor. This morning they said he could owe her a quarter of his worth, which is something like $1.6 billion (American). I'm bad at math so we will just call that a boat load of cash. I think the bulk of it is because they have a child together, because they have only been married for 4 years.

That's a lot of money. He should set the money up in a trust fund for the child and make whatever stipulations necessary to make sure she can't touch one penny of it. Let someone else be the person that oversees the usage of the money.

Simon Cowell, one of the most respected talent scouts in the recording industry, actually voted against Taylor Hicks and Chris Daughtry from being sent to the Hollywood competition.

He tried to reject them right at their auditions!

Paula and Randy, both of whom are criticized for their critical abilities and judgement, out-voted Simon 2-1.

Simon you are a lousy judge of talent.

I read somewhere that it comes out to about 1 million for every WEEK they were married! OUCH

If Paul rejected a pre-nup...bad on him. I wonder if he thought he could duplicate what seemed like an ideal marriage that he and Linda had.

They are not the talent that he knows how to promote although with Chris he could have learned fast.

I find little love for Katharine in FR ( and if I do, it is a rare thing indeed). But someone e-mailed this to me who saw this on Kat's fan board at AI....

Found this! The wonders of TV editing:

"I never posted on these boards before but I decided to sign up because I wanted to tell you guys what happened last night. I was in the audience last night and watched the show on tv today, and I have to say what the Camera does to people is not right. I for one was never a Katherine fan, I found her to be rude and nasty. But after attending the show for the first time last night and then watching it back on tv it is not what it seems! When they announced Elliott was going home Katherine put her hand on her heart (i guess she was nervous) and then she put her arm around Elliott and was saying something to him and like rubbing his back so it looked to me as if she was consoling him, then he said something and Taylor and Katherine were smiling. Then today when I watched it on tv it just looked like Katherine didnt care. Another thing is when Katherines family was smiling I think it was at the point Katherine and Elliott kissed because the whole crowd went wild (not kissed like in a "I want you" way but in a friendly way)..They made it look really bad on tv and it wasnt. After the show Elliott was crying and said that he is so happy he got to be a part of the show and he thanked everyone then they rushed him off the stage but he came back out and the judges were hugging him and then Taylor and Katherine and him had a group hug for like 10 minutes and wouldnt let go lol then I had to leave so I didnt see what else happened. Aside from Elliott leaving it was a great show. Their voices sound 10x as amazing in person then on tv as well. They look like they really love each other and they got really close it was good to see. ""

Folks, let's try to be fair to Ms. Mcphee. She may not really be Mcnasty even with McDaddy pulling the Mcstrings.

Could be. Brietling makes a great watch. They include entertainment stars in their ads (John Travolta as an example).
