DID YOU KNOW THAT JOE COCKER's VERSION WAS A SUPER HIT IN THE EARLY 80's THAT SOLD CLOSE TO 4 MILLION COPIES IN THE USA ALONE !

I didn't like the song pick. I didn't like the song too much to begin with. Didn't care for Cocker's version. You know what I think of when I hear that song? I think of Three's Company when Jack get's LArry to sing that song while hiding in the bushes, so Jack can make it look like he is serenading that Sothren Belle. Do you remember that episode. Funny stuff! But, that is what I think of. I liked Taylor's version a thousand times better!

The Joe Cocker version is a classic, and Taylor's performance on this song was a pale imitation of the original IMO. Cocker has such a distinct voice, the gravel is like the patina on an antique. By comparison, Taylor's version "feels" like a modern interpretation of an antique. And I love Taylor.

I like a little gravel or raspiness in the voice, but, it's kind of like going to the beach, there's only so much sand I'll put up with in my bottoms. :)

Well you just don't like Joe Cocker then, and probably not Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Gregg Allman and many more singers who don't have "perfect" voices. It's the complete presentation-- the emotion, the congruence of the sound to the lyrics, and the memorability of the rendition-- that makes all the difference.

In the case of singer-songwriters, they are creating the entire thing, not just the vocal arrangement. So, they are even more difficult to find. Kelly Clarkson, as an example, appears to have a gift for writing lyrics in addition to her singing voice...

Taylor may have that talent-- if so, I look forward to seeing it develop.

I don't mind imperfect voices, but like I said, to a point. I like Ray Charles, Springsteen (if I ignore his politics), and Dylan's ok.

Oh and it might not be Cocker's voice per se. It might be how he sounded on THAT song because I have a 45 of The Letter and I like that. :)

Billy Preston will be a guest performer on the season finale of American Idol. 8PM ET/PT.

Think maybe we will get to hear Billy Preston and Taylor do 'Will It Go Round in Circles'?

Better disregard the last post, it might be old material. Was he on the finale last year? I don't remember.

Even if total voters went up (and I'm not convinced they did), that doesn't mean a large portion of Chris' fans didn't vote. It just means that there are more people voting, and probably different people.

It is statistically impossible to tell if they were inactive voters or former Chris voters. This thread is hardly a representative sample.

From Nigel's interview today:

Taylor - "Dancing in the Dark" - "Great song, good for his voice. I was sitting next to Rod Stewart last night when he heard this. We watched it on television together. And he applauded him and said 'that's great, you sounded great' he said."

Taylor - "You Are So Beautiful", "[I think] 'Dancing in the Dark' was better. He seemed to have an angry face on...it's like telling a woman 'you're beautiful' with an angry face. It didn't really work for me. It does show what a great voice he's got."

Taylor - "Try a Little Tenderness" - "Perfect song for him. It allowed him to start gently and then give it all that sort of 'Taylor' soul that he's got. He had a lot of fun with it. It felt a bit like a Blues Brothers presentation for me But, again, I think it showed him off to his best. Overall I think Taylor came through with three good performances. The highlight for me was "Dancing in the Dark".

My opinion on him is the same as Simon. They just cannot comprehend the appeal. If they haven't gotten it by now they never, ever will. Watch for serious pimping of Stepford Kat next week......

Oh yeah!

It's been pointed out before that they can do wonders in the studio nowadays, but what will they do with her not being able to sing in public without screeching?
