Taylor's "Do I Make You Proud" debuts at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Here's a link to the article, which I've excerpted below:

June 22, 2006, Fred Bronson 'HIPS' SLIPS; HICKS CLICKS: America's love affair with "American Idol" hasn't abated, as evidenced by the series garnering its highest ratings in its fifth season and this year's champ Taylor Hicks wresting The Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 crown away from Shakira and Wyclef Jean. Their "Hips Don't Lie" (Epic) slips to No. 2 while Hicks debuts in pole position with his first single "Do I Make You Proud" (Arista).

Hicks also debuts at No. 1 on the Pop 100 with "Do I Make You Proud." On the Hot Singles Sales chart, the two-sided single "Do I Make You Proud"/"Takin' It to the Streets," rockets 17-1. With three No. 1s in Hicks' column, the "American Idol" franchise now has 93 No. 1s, counting all charts compiled by the Billboard Information Group.

That's great! On local news they reported that Taylor's donating some of the proceeds to Red Cross. :) That cant' hurt sales. Very savvy of him to do that, as well as generous. :) How have you been? I didn't know everyone was still posting news here. I need to go back and read some posts.

Hi Emily. I don't know if many people are still posting about AI here. It just seemed like the right place to put the news about Taylor. Hope Jonny sees it.

I'm doing good. How about you?

Idol Chartwatch, June 23: Taylor Hicks Tops the Charts
by Donna Reynolds -- 06/23/2006

Taylor’s single, “Do I Make You Proud,” had strong first-week sales, and this week he’s made his fans truly proud. But he’s not the only Idol on this week’s charts. Read on to find out more.

View Printable version of this article

Can I get a “woooooo!” Taylor’s single, “Do I Make You Proud,” is a bona fide hit. Are you ready for this? The single sold 190,147 copies and had 37,799 downloads for total sales of 227,946. As a result, the single debuted at #1 on both the Hot 100 and the Pop 100, and topped the Single Sales chart as well! It also charted on Hot Digital Tracks (#15). Of Idol winners, only Ruben and Kelly had stronger first week sales! And that’s not all. Taylor’s “Takin’ it to the Streets” returned to the Hot 100 (#94), the Pop 100 (#71), and Hot Digital Songs (#64).

Here’s the rundown on the rest of the Idols’ singles:

Chris Daughtry’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” was #80 on the Hot 100. Last year’s group single, “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” remained at #13 on the Single Sales chart. Bo’s “Inside Your Heaven”/“Vehicle” moved up two spots to #10, and Carrie’s “Inside Your Heaven”/“Independence Day” charted at #29.

Bo Bice’s single “The Real Thing” was #87 on the Hot 100, #63 on the Pop 100, and #44 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. It also appeared on the Adult Top 40 (#11) and the Adult Contemporary chart (#18).

Carrie Underwood’s “Don’t Forget to Remember Me” was #54 on the Hot 100, #40 on the Hot 100 Airplay, and #6 on the Country chart. “Jesus, Take the Wheel” was #49 on Hot Digital Tracks, #55 on Hot Digital Songs, and #26 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

“Some Hearts” was #16 on the Adult Contemporary listing, and “Before He Cheats” was #56 on the Country chart.

Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away” was #33 on the Hot 100, #26 on the Pop 100, #39 on the Hot 100 Airplay, and #19 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. It charted at #6 on the Adult Top 40, #32 on Hot Digital Songs chart, #24 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #31 on the Hot Digital Tracks. It was #43 on the Hot Dance Club chart, and made it to #9 on the Dance Radio Airplay chart. “Because of You” remained at #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Josh Gracin’s “Favorite State of Mind” was #26 on the Country chart and Miranda Lambert’s “New Strings” was #33 on the same.

Mario Vazquez’s first single, “Gallery,” moved up to #79 on the Pop 100, and is #19 on the Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart. He’s making his move! And someone else with whom we are all familiar has made it onto the singles charts this week. Paris Hilton’s single, “Stars are Blind,” made its debut at #46 on the Hot Dance Club chart.

Now for the Idol-related albums:

American Idol Season Five Encores dropped to #29 on the Billboard 200. It was #11 on the Internet Album Sales chart and #3 on the Top Soundtracks list.

Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts was #16 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the Country chart. Kelly Clarkson’s CD, Breakaway was #45 on the Billboard 200 and Miranda Lambert’s Kerosene was #161. Miranda’s album was #36 on the Country chart.

Paris’ grandma Ann Nesby’s The Spirit was #42 on the Gospel listing and returned to the Hot R&B Chart at #98.

Here’s how the Idol-related compilation albums charted this week:

Now That’s What I Call Music #21 (Now 21) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” was #15 on the Billboard 200, but remained at the top of the Compilation chart. It was also on the R&B list (#21).

The Gospel, which features Tamyra Gray’s “Now Behold The Lamb,” was #16 on the Gospel chart.

Wow Gospel 2006, featuring George Huff’s “Brighter Day,” was #4 on the Gospel Chart and #12 on the Top Compilation chart.

Now That’s What I Call Music #20 (Now 20) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes” was #11 on the Compilation Chart and dropped off the Billboard 200 (at last!).

Totally Country 5 featuring Miranda Lambert’s “Kerosene” was #52 on the Country chart and #14 on the Compilation chart.

And that’s it for this first week of summer!

Taylor Hicks appeared for a 2nd time on June 22,2006 together with Kevin Spacey on Jay Leno's TONIGHT show.

FOR THOSE WHO MISSED THE JAY LENO SEGMENT WITH TAYLOR HICKS AND KEVIN SPACEY AND WHO CAN'T ACCESS THE gofish.com VIDEO ( you can find it BTW in the VIDEO and AUDIO links forum ), HERE IS A PERSONAL STORY I COPIED FROM MJ's BIG BOARD MADE BY A FAN WHO CALLS HERSELF --- hot4taylor. SHE ACTUALLY GOT CONNECTIONS TO *BE* IN THE STUDIO WHEN TAYLOR APPEARED AND HERE IS HER PERSONAL ACCOUNT (CUT AND PASTE ) :

First off...my brother has got some connections...cause I was in the second row! I got to go up at the beginning and shake Jay's hand with the mob pit.

Here's what I can tell you. Taylor is AWESOME! Here a recap of what happens...

Kevin Spacey is the first guest...he gets 2 segments.

Jay introduces Taylor and the crownd goes nuts...especially me. Come out in tan jacket and jeans with those aligator boots that he wears and he's lookin fine.

Jay asks if he's met Kevin. Taylor says no...but then goes on to say how much he admired his work on the Bobby Darin movie. It's very thoughtful and Kevin seems to appreciate it.

Then Jay asks about the People cover. Taylor said he got the call from People when he was doing press in New York...and he said in a very funny voice "Yeah, I think that's something I might like to do." Jay asks him to make a list of qualities he looks for in a woman...and as he's about to speak...Jay says 'big boobs.' Taylor saiys "Well I was going to say funny...but you can write that one down too...' (it's VERY funny)

Jay has Taylor re-tell the Katrina story and how he ended up in L.A.

Jay asks if he has bought anything fancy yet and he said a couch. Jay makes fun of him a bit on that and the Kevin says if he finds a girl with big boobs he won't need a couch. (again...very funny)

Then they ask if Taylor ever saw Kevin's idol bit on SNL...and they played a clip of that.

They take a break and then Taylor comes out and sings DIMYP. He's really good. A little shaky at one spot in the middle...but he ended it differently and it's AWESOME.

The show ends and everyone is screaming for Taylor. He waves alot and is very gracious. Then he dissapears.

As we are walking out..my husband says...'Oh my God, there he is..." I turn around and Taylor had come back out to shale peoples hands. I put on my best linebacker pose and made my way up and YES I GOT TO SHAKE HIS HAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am in heaven.

Hey Everyone...well, i just got up and you guys are so efficient you beat me to it!!!!

Taylor finally called me last nite at 6:25 california time!! he was obviously very busy, but we had a very nice conversation. In this conversation taylor DID say that he still had not gotten the couch, but that he was going to be on the road for god knows how long and what he wanted me to do with the money was to split it between kid one transport AND studio by the tracks, so that is what i will be doing...i can't say for sure WHY he said what he said on leno about buying a couch. I think it was just a shout out to all of you that his life is good now and he is able to make all of his dreams come true thanks to the soul patrol. i will be making the donations while in b'ham in august and anyone that wants to accompany me to do this is welcome to come. he said both charities are in b'ham. the donations will be made in honor of "taylor's couch" and the soul patrol. i feel like everyone else...i wish we could have put a couch in his living room, but he knows the donations were thru much love and he wants to do something worthy with the money and this was his decision to make...below is a short email that he composed for me to post to you guys...he told me to thank all of you for everything as well!!!!

Hello to all Soul Patrol, Taylor here and very busy... Thank you so much for the donation of the couch money, but what I think we should do is give it to two of the charities ..Kid One and Studio By the Tracks.. These are great organizations and I am thrilled to know that this money will go to an admirable cause..Thanks so much and love to the Soul Patrol!!!!

IN RELATION TO THE POST BY TAYLOR HICKS TO HIS FANS ABOVE ...

Here is a profile of Taylor Hick's favorite charities ....

KID ONE

http://www.kidone.org/

ABOUT KID ONE

Kid One Transport is a nonprofit organization that provides free rides to non-emergency medical appointments for children and expectant mothers. An estimated 500,000 children in the state of Alabama live in homes with little or no reliable transportation. These children often forgo non-emergency medical care such as checkups, counseling and dental appointments because it is simply too hard for families to get to the doctor. This is called the transportation barrier and it affects over four million children nationwide.

Over the past seven years, Kid One Transport has been striving to eliminate the transportation barrier for Alabama’s children. Since the beginning, the Kid One Transport Team has driven nearly two million miles, made thousands of trips and served over 5,000 children. Click here for the most up-to-date trip and enrollment totals for each region served.
Kid One was founded when a 24-year-old Hoover, Alabama firefighter named Russell Jackson discovered children in rural Alabama who were suffering and dying from preventable or treatable illnesses for lack of a ride. Through years of hard work, faith, and the support of the community, Kid One is on the way to realizing its vision – that Alabama’s children will have the chance to lead longer, healthier lives. Read the complete history of Kid One here ( http://www.kidone.org/history.asp )

Kid One is on the right track, but still has miles to go. You can help us get there by making a donation to Kid One today. Click here for more information on donating to Kid One (http://www.kidone.org/donate.asp).

Your investment in the children of Alabama will pay off for an entire generation and beyond.

STUDIO BY THE TRACKS

Introduction

Visual works created by individuals with autism provide windows into singularly unique and fascinating universes. No one has fully explained why autism occurs. Friends and family members are often frustrated by the inability to enter into communion with the autistic person, but there are divides which are bridgeable.

This is the web site for Studio By The Tracks, a small non-profit agency which every week provides safe harbor for 25 individuals with autism who come here to make art. We also provide a safe arena for dozens of at-risk children who come to the Studio to sculpt, paint, draw, deconstruct, assemble, write and act. Please check out out galleries of visual works by adults with autism and at-risk youth. Also please check out our calendar of upcoming events and classes.
Mission Statement

Studio By The Tracks (SBTT), a non-profit organization, was formed in 1989 to provide free art classes to special needs adults and emotionally conflicted children. SBTT provides a focused, energized effort which allows troubled young people and adults with special needs an outlet to create. We encourage a supportive and nonjudgmental atmosphere necessary to nurture creative abilities, enhance self-esteem, and explore alternative ways of coping with emotional and physical conflict.

The success of out program is two-fold. First, since opening our doors in 1989, over 1,000 at-risk youth have participated in the curriculum at SBTT. A great number of these young people maintain contact with the Studio and many credit the Studio as a catalyst in their success after leaving the program.

Secondly, SBTT serves 25 individuals with mental disorders, principally adults and teenagers with autism. Many of these individuals have been coming to the Studio since 1989 and have become career artists who sell their artwork are cultivate collectors. Assisting these unique and singular visionaries in their determination for creative growth and self-sufficiency is one of SBTT's greatest successes.

To support our mission, SBTT offers art classes to the public, for both children and adults. We also host a yearly benefit, "Art From The Heart," at which artwork by students as well as local artists, is exhibited and auctioned.

Donations
Studio By The Tracks has been chosen by American Idol finalist Taylor Hicks (another Birmingham phenomenon...) as his charity of choice. We're pleased Taylor remembered us...and we hope you will too.

Hello Emily,

Taylor Hicks did a new, fresh, jazzy/bluesy take on his Billboard hit -- DO I MAKE YOU PROUD last night on the Jay Leno show. He had a band that sounded very similar to his own -- the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra (LMBO).

It sounds DIFFERENT from the album and has a different arrangement ( which I hear, he actually helped re-arrange personally ).

Listen to this different version here :

http://www.gofish.com/userVideoPlayer.gfp?gfid=30-1038803

Here is my personal musical perspective on this particular version of DIMYP....

I got the feeling he may have jammed with Brian Less and or LMBO to help with the new arrangement. Did anyone notice that the make-up of the band was the same as LMBO (ie: drums, keyboards, sax, bass and guitar)? Just something I noticed. Makes me wonder if he is trying to get TPTB hire LMBO as his band for TV appearances.

No, the ones who were his accompaniment last night in Leno's show isn't his band - but the arrangement seems to be Taylorized with his own LMBO band's influence. Perhaps even though AI wouldn't bring his band along on tour - they will have at least compromised to give Taylor more artistic input into the arrangements (and maybe song choice too?). Not only for the tour but his first CD?

He has already shown Nigel his backbone - it would be wise for them to appease him since he's obviously going to be a success with his OWN sound. We can only hope the AIdiots are waking up and not playing games with this year's idol.

It seems obvious to me that what we saw last night was Taylor's NEW band. That grouping of musicians (with Hammond B3 organ and sax) didn't happen by accident. That's a quintessential soul band grouping.

That arrangement wasn't spur of the moment either. Taylor's been working with that band, in rehersals and/or the studio.

That is almost certainly the band that will perform in Salt Lake City with Taylor next week. It is probably the Idol tour band.

But again, the new arrangement sounds fabulous and has resurrected that song. If they use that arrangement on his first CD, it will make DIMYP sound even fresher than before.

Just goes to show how an innovative person can make a song that people were prepared to actually forget MEMORABLE.

I like that arrangement MUCH better. Thanks for the Leno links because I missed the show. Didn't know he was going to be on again. I think he and Jay seemed to have formed a friendship or at least that is how it appears.

Great observations! This version does sound so much better. I don't think the keyboard player is as good as Brian Less IMO.

Yes, it has the food booths, etc. And some really good local talent as well. Bo Bice, Ruben Studdard and Taylor all played at City stages before going on AI. Of course, most go to hear the main talent.

Strictly for Taylor Hicks fans...

The blogger, Gray Charles ( see his wesite : www.graycharles.com ), was able to snag a detailed interview with Taylor Hicks, when Taylor himself called him after Gray's request to Taylor's PR man for an interview.

Taylor actually is AWARE of Gray Charles' website and visits it occasionally and admits to ADMIRING the content of the site.

(NOTE: Taylor DOES visit the American Idol blog sites as well as the fan boards and occasionally asks his friends to post on his behalf ( for instance, he asked his friend, Connie to relay to folks who have been gathering donations to buy him a new couch to give the money instead to his favorite charities -- KIDS ONE and STUDIO ON THE TRACKS ).

Suffice it to say that Gray Charles has earned Taylor's trust and he opened up to him in an 8 part interview which you can view in Gray Charles' website.

I'd say it is by far, THE BEST INTERVIEW OF TAYLOR HICKS BAD NONE. You get to see an insight into the kind of person and musician Taylor Hicks is.

Get on the Bus
http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1209031_4_0_,00.html
Catching up with ''Idol'' rocker Chris Daughtry: The season 5 singer tells Adam B. Vary about the gang's three-month tour, his new material, why he said no to Fuel, and more

At this point, it's a cliché to trumpet the top 10 contestants from the fifth season of American Idol as the most talented (and varied) in the show's history. Starting July 5, however, they'll finally get to prove it on the American Idol Live! tour: Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler, Ace Young, Bucky Covington, Mandisa, and Lisa Tucker will get to belt, croon, growl, and jive in 48 cities nationwide.

In anticipation, we called up Daughtry — a.k.a. The Man Who Was Robbed of His Rightful Title — and talked with him about what to expect from the show, how he'll handle the hardships of a three-month tour, what's next for his career, why he turned down that lead-singer offer from Fuel, and what's the deal with his new tattoo.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So break it down for us — what can we expect from this summer's Idol tour?
CHRIS DAUGHTRY: Well, I won't tell you what we're singing, but everybody's got at least two songs and a duet, and then a few of us have three or four songs. Everybody seems to have pretty strong sets. It's really cool. A lot of us are playing instruments — a little departure from the show there.

The group numbers — are they going to be like what we saw on the Idol finale?
Not really. Well, kind of. [Laughs] We're doing a couple group songs. They're not, like, totally cheesy or anything. They play out very well.

So there's no danger of it coming off as, you know, a bit Brady Bunch?
Well, we'll see. We haven't done choreography yet.

And you don't strike me as the kind of guy who is necessarily all about the choreography.
I'm not about it at all. But I do what I gotta do and always try to keep it from, you know, looking too silly.

What are you most looking forward to performing?
My first song. Actually, me and Elliott are doing a duet that's going to be awesome as well... It's a rock song.

Who are you most looking forward to watching when you're off stage?
Honestly, because I've been watching everybody for the past couple weeks, I think everybody's got a pretty good thing. I really like Bucky's set, and Elliott's set, and Ace has got a pretty good set too. But Taylor is really fun to watch. Yeah, that'll be fun.

Now, are you prepared for three months on a bus with all your fellow Idols?
Um, I think so. I feel like we've been in a pretty concentrated space for four months now, but this will definitely be a little different.

You're the only one in the show with a family of your own. How are you going to work that out?
It's going to work basically like it did on the show. I was on the show for four months before I even went home, and my kids were only able to come out twice during that whole time. So we made that work, and we're going have to do the same with this. They're going to be able to come out on a few dates, but it's not exactly easy to drive behind a tour bus and bring the kids along, you know what I mean?

It seems like in many respects that is the life of a rock star, hitting the road for much of the year. Is that something you've just been prepared to do?
Yeah, and I think eventually you get in a position where you're able to have your family along with you on the road and it works out. But in the earlier stages, it's almost impossible.

Let's talk about your career. Earlier this month you turned down Fuel's offer for you to be their lead singer. Was that hard to do?
No. If I was still playing with my band back at home, and we weren't getting gigs, playing the same old bars, and Fuel approached me and said, 'Hey, you want to be our singer?' it would have been really easy to say yes. But once you've gotten the exposure, and everybody knows who you are and you have options, it's really difficult to just say, 'Yeah, I'm going to do that.' [Going on my own] gives me an opportunity to write my own stuff and do my own thing. So it wasn't that hard to turn it down considering the circumstances.

So will you have time to write on the road?
I've been writing for weeks now, all my own material. So, yeah, I'll be doing a lot.

And will you be able to record those songs during the tour?
Um, we'll see...That's all in the works right now.

We all know you're a huge fan of Live and love that particular kind of sound, but what is the Chris Daughtry sound going to be?
It's going to sound a little different than that. A lot of the way I delivered the songs on the show is kind of where I'm going — it's pretty rockin'. It's definitely rock radio, but hopefully a few songs may cross over into mainstream as well.

Did I hear right that you just got a tattoo?
[Pause] Boy, things travel fast, don't they? Yeah, I did.

It's on your back, right?
Yeah.

And it's of your last name?
Yes.

What's the story behind why you wanted to do that?
Ah, we won't go into that right now. [Laughs] I didn't really get it to, um... [Long pause] I don't know. I just don't want to do a story on it right now.

All right. Was it your first tattoo? Was it painful to get?
Yes [it was my first]. It wasn't too bad. It took about three hours and wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Finally, how are you guys going to be passing the time on the tour bus?
For me, I'm writing for my album — I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time doing that. But, you know, with us guys, we'll probably find something to pass the time, bring out the guitar and jam out.

Any completely mindless diversions?
I'm sure there will be some Xbox on there.
