Cats are so funny. Dogs act grateful when you help them. Kitties just walk in like they own the place:') She's cute and very lucky.
Welcome
I went to check on Sarah Lee and there was a mare down. Another boarder said she had been calling and yelling at her but she hadn't moved. I thought she was dead. Her head was extended back and one back leg was in the air. She looked stiff. Anyway, when we walked up she started moving her head and after several attempts got up and started to walk off. I groaned when I saw she had a halter on. We walked her down though and I caught her. She kept stopping and parking and trying to poop. She finally did a little. The girl with me was going to call the stable owner. She's out of town and it's her horse. We both voiced at the same time our reluctance to do that though. Too funny. We were worried that the horse might just have been sleeping and calling her to tell her we woke her up. One of her friends that helps out drove up though. She said she had been colicing in the evenings for some reason and took her and was gonna give her some banamine and watch her.
Hmmmm, are they ever going to call a vet or just keep drugging her up? I'd think after awhile it wouldn't be good to just keep giving her banimine. JMO, tho. I realize you don't have any say, just funny that the horse owner isn't more concerned. Maybe she already knows why tho???
Becky
What is evenings though? Every? A couple of times that have been in the evenings? I guess I should have asked but I was just relieved to turn her over and I had a horse waiting.
It sure is getting hot, already. I've been thinking about starting to give mine a little oil.
Sounds good and I hope you can make it come true :~D My husband and I have two and a half horses and we trail ride. When I was younger I did horse shows and such, but never any rodeo. :~D
Be sure you put something waterproof in the bottom of the "whelping box". Cover it over with beach towels or something. I always used a rubber crib sheet. It's amazing how much amniotic fluid one small mama cat can produce . . .
She is probably going to pick her own spot no matter what you do. One of mine selected the wicker trash basket as the perfect place to give birth, on top of the old envelopes and used Kleenex . . . . I gave up and lined it with old rags, and she was happy as a lark.
Yes, the heat is brutal here. I'm going to have to figure a way to carry a bigger bag so I can carry more water during the ride. I'm looking forward to this ride, but really getting worried about the heat. I'ts going to be bad. Upper 90's.

I think my cat liked the wicker trash can because it "breathed" and it had gaps in the weave that she could see out of. A plastic laundry basket ought to do almost as well though.
Come July, I expect it to be a kicker. We have already got into the 100s a few time. What about one of those water back packs? Think it would bother you?
Well, I spent some of the retirement funds on a camcorder. I have it charging. The instructions say when it's done the red light will stop flashing. Any idea how long that might be? It doesn't say.
I put a parrot in a wicker hamper once:')
Yeah, I think one of those back packs would bother me after 5 hours. I will bring my saddle in tonight and see what all I can tie on to carry water in.
The bridle/halter combo that Jenny got for me isn't going to be in in time:(. I'll have to put a halter under the bridle. My reins will double as a lead rope, that leaves the back tie rings for a bag of some type. I'm going to look today for a cantle or pommel bag.
Becky
Probably best not to try anything new before the ride anyway.
Well, it would certainly wilt me, but you and your horse are as acclimated as any to dealing with the heat. How early can you start out?
Well, I thought about one of those things, but I think after a while it would drive me nuts:)
Well, I've been making a list of the things I need to get/do to get ready. Getting some stuff gathered up for packing. I've started getting all my baby trees, and garden watered good for while I'm gone. Mack is so busy, I hate leaving him with more to do than just feed the animals that are here. AND my stomach is starting to do the customary flipflops it does as time gets closer:). You'd think I'd get use to this.
Tomorrow will be packing day, Fri morning I'll bathe Harley then go. I was going to bathe him tomorrow, but then I'd have to touch him up on Fri. Wasted effort. I'll have plenty of time Fri. morning. I don't really have to get there till early afternoon. Most people don't pull in till late afternoon. I just would like to get a shady spot.
Becky
You can't start till they start you:). Sat. the lastest I have ever started was around 8. Sometimes they still have to do some check ins. Sunday, they start us by 7.
Today will be a good test day. Celia should be coming in the next hour. Starting early makes it easier then starting in the heat of the day.
