Good Morning to you too. It calmed down after lunch and the sun came out, so you never know what to expect around here. It rained a little more this morning, but the sun's back out again. So hopefully we're done with this for a while.
Maybe we should all get together for a ride in Norman Ok:')
The Saddle Club Storm Chasers! I'm not normally an adrenalin junkie either. I prefer things calm and sane. But, there is just something about those big storms that fascinates me. I've never been through a tornado but came very close once, and not in Texas at that. I have lived in Texas for 32 years now. In Virginia we didn't have severe weather like this except for hurricanes. I remember 1 tornado back when I was in Jr. High. We were out for a Sunday drive and drove right through the storm but just missed the tornado NOT knowing what the hell we had gotten into. A huge old oak tree was ripped up and laid over next to the road. After passing through the storm, we looked back and could see the tornado from a distance. We were too ignorant to know just how much danger we were in at the time. Now, I look back and thank God that He was looking out for us because we were too stupid to do it.
I did go through an earthquake once in the Philippines. Weirdest thing I ever felt! The ground is NOT supposed to roll around under your feet.
How far is everyone from Norman? I'd love to meet up with some of you for a trail ride. I am about a 3 hour drive away.
For photos and some video of the aftermath, go to http://www.nbc5i.com/index.html. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the photos and video. To find the video, scroll through the box that contains the latest videos and click on play.
I've been through several earthquakes... there's always a few seconds of wonder, "is the house really shaking?" "Did a really big truck just go by?" "Is the washer out of balance?"
I don't really fear earthquakes unless I'm in the city, and I rarely am. They only really do damage when everything is concrete and nothing can flex. Out here at our place, since it's a mobile, there's nothing heavy that can fall on us from overhead... it might jump off the blocks, but it doesn't have far to fall :~D
Two years ago or so, we had the Nisqually quake, centered about 10 miles from here, and big enough to take out most brick chimneys in the old part of town and do extensive damage to the capitol and other stone buildings in town. I was 100 miles away and though we felt it up there, I was sorry to have missed it. Only sign of it here at home were some posts that had been leaning on the barn fell over, and a tall ceramic cat I had in my bathroom fell over and broke... Troublesome thing was I didn't find the head till later... it had rolled around the corner and under my bed.
When I visited my great Aunt in Calif, she was showing me her tea pot collection. Some are very old. She has them on shelves all thru her house. I wondered how they haven't broken with all the earthquakes she has gone thru. I guess they just roll on the carpet.
Earthquakes. There's something that I want no part of thank you. :-D
A nice drive though:')
I couldn't open your link. Might just be my computer.
Well, there is some sticky stuff people get to stick valuables such as antiques or hummels and things to the shelf, and also really, wood frame houses, particularly OLD ones, are loose and don't amplify the movement the way stiff construction techniques do. All your stone and brick down there, that survives hurricanes? It'd fall in a heap. The old shacks that would be a deathtrap down there aren't harmed by earthquakes. We were close to the epicenter of a quake in our old beach house, we didn't feel it at all, didn't know about it till they announced it on the news.
Might be. Just type the address into your browser, www.nbc5i.com.
Maybe that's what it is. It's an old wood frame house.
I shouldn't have just copied the address from the address window. It doesn't like the "index" page added. Just go to http://www.nbc5i.com and it should work.
I am about 13 hours from Tulsa. If I remember correctly Norman is closer to OK City isnt't it? How about somewhere in ARK? I hear there are beautiful trails in the Ozarks!
I could not open it either. Said "Page Not Found"
Those are awesome!
Aren't there some trails around Hot Springs? That is about 2 hours further for me than Norman, around 5 hrs. Norman is on the southern outskirts of Ok City.
Whereabouts on the East Coast? I have family in SE Virginia, and lots of friends in Pennsylvania and upper NY state.
I'm in MA But south east Virginia is nice. I've been around NY state, Utica and Hamilton and places, but I've only driven through PA. Upstate NY is a really nice place to live.
