I suspect he wasn't groomed for six months. I know we've got scrub him with some anti bacterial shampoo. Felt some crunchies under his hair. I'll get some pics after a few months of elbow grease. He should look much better by then.

Poor lamb. I'd alternate scrubbing with the shampoo with good old fashioned currying and rubbing with the rubber mitts with the bumps on 'em (whaddya call those? they really work).

And I would pull that mane down to about 4 inches to let it grow back even - but then I'm a hunter-jumper person so my advice probably isn't good. I'd pull the tail a little shorter too.

Here's my mare.

She's pretty spry for a 23 year old . . .

Thanks for the advice. He is going to need some attention, that's for sure.

Your mare is great! I need to get some pics of mom's 28 year old gelding. He retired from showing at a spry 26. I just figured out how to post pics and they're now on my profile. I'm kind of a slave to my horses. They're the best friends a girl could have. Good thing my b/f is so understanding.

...He decided to eat his hay out of the cow feeder over the winter and did a real number on his mane...

Yeah, those things are awful. They make them for horses though and they're really the best thing to feed them rolls out of. I've got a couple of them that I use for my bunch. I keep them inside the run-in sheds so the hay doesn't get wet and waste so much.

... Might just be a candiate for roaching and letting it grow back evenly.

I had to do that to one of my brood mares. She kept eating through the barbed wire fence and pulling hers out. It's taking forever to grow back.

Thanks. I believe I've drooled over the places you ride a time or two. Wish we had more land like yours. Everything around the farm is being developed. And it isn't even my farm! My best friend is kind enough to let our horses live there.

Yeah - just trash....

I'm going to just sit and speculate about the other one :~D

And I may go out and tape the other one back up... Just so critters don't spread it all over. Let someone in the future wonder why it was taped up.... twice :~D

Hey welcome to the thread, and thanks for the picture. I use to have a roan that looked somewhat like this one.

Here's my boy now:

We just got back in from a ride. Stick around and join in the thread lots:) What do you do with your Arabs?

Too many people in lots of places, for my taste.

Indeed... and since the rider doesn't look like a 'Carolyn'... who's on him? Is he a trainer, relative, ???

We go to several arabian beed shows and open shows each year. My mom loves dressage and I'm a big fan of western pleasure. Deuce, my young gelding, has decided that he wants to lift his head and motor so it looks like I have to learn saddle seat.

We ride around the acreage on the farm as much as we can for relaxation. Occasionally we are lucky enough to take the boys to a judged pleasure trail ride.
