I talked to Celia last night, and she pointed out a development in Natrc, that I hadn't thought of. The Ark. ride was last weekend. There was only 24 riders:(. That wasn't hardly enough to pay the judges. Has to be gas prices. We figured it would have cost us about $275 in gas if we went. People can't afford that.But if it keeps up, rides are going to be canceled:(

Sorry, but the Hobbit Hole really isn't a store. Your best bet is to buy locally whatever is LEGAL in your state. In Michigan, posession of anything stronger than 2% OC is a felony.
If you have the money, and a place to carry it, get the "bear spray", which is about the size of a small fire extinguisher.
Hard to fit in the average purse, but I spose... ;~D

No, we're not going to get any more for now. Hopefully Steve will be finished with school very soon and we don't know what the future holds. I don't want to start anything new...we even scaled back the garden this year.
I was considering a half-dozen meat chickens there for a while, but don't have the heart for it now. I still think it's a good thing though, raising meat chickens humanely.
It is a good idea. My farriers wife has gotten into raising her own foodstuffs in a big way, beef cows, milk cow, and chickens.
I learned years ago with my first horse, and this is cowardice on my part, not to get too attached to animals. Hurts to much:) I love my animals, but in the back of my head, I constantly remind my self they are animals and are most likely going to die before me.
I do see myself creeping closer and closer to "loving" Harley tho. I have this big hope that he'll out live me now, that he'll be the last horse I ever have to own. My son keeps telling me that is very unrealistic and to get over it:) And then of course there is Susie....

I love all my animals without reservation, but I know their lives are shorter than mine. I don't want to outlive them, I'd worry about them then.
On the chicken thing, I know I've mentioned that while chickens don't do much for me, I think ducks would be fun. Well our feed store has a sign up that because of fear of bird flu, they aren't selling any chicks or ducks in the store this year, you have to get them direct from the supplier. Is this happening down there too?
Since I'm not in the market to by fowls, I don't know. My feed store has never sold chickens/ducks.
Ducks do make wonderful pets. My kids had some when they were growing up. The funny thing is when you only have 1 it really really becomes a pet. Two times we got pairs of ducks, and both times we lost one before they grew up. While there were two, they always ran away from us and were generally hard to catch. Once one died the remaining one LOVED us. They came when you called. One of them even got to where he followed the kids out to the end of the driveway when they went to catch the school bus, pecked around while they waited then came waddling back up the drive after they got on the bus. It was hilarious.
But when he was about 3, he got very aggressive towards Jenny. He thought her foot was his mate. He tried it with all of us, but the rest of us kicked the crap out of him and he stopped, but she couldn't/wouldn't do that. It got really bad, he'd bite her shins and leave marks. We had a neighbor who had a pond full of female ducks. We gave him to them and he was happy:). But he did live on their front porch the first summer instead of in the duck house. It took him a while to learn he was a duck:)
I have children who would probably take any horse I left, especially if they knew mom LOVED it:). And I hate to admit it, it makes me vulnerable:), but I probably love all my animals more then I act like:). I'm always just trying to convince myself I don't:)

I probably shouldn't get either... It'd be a struggle to train my dogs, particularly Gidget, to not kill them. And even if I succeeded in that, they'd just be bait for coyotes. I rather like that there is nothing outside at night that would be a draw for coyotes. I don't want small prey around, the cats are bad enough, because I don't want to start a war where I've got to stand guard with a gun every night.
I just can't take the drama in the wild kingdom.
We lost the first pet duck we had to a coyote:(.
Grizzly is doing and excellent job keeping them away. The only problem with him is he is protecting the rooster I have too much:). Whenever they get to far from the barn he herds them back. Mack thinks he's "chasing" them to catch them, but I don't. I've watched him and once they head back to the barn he stops. But I WANT them to roam the whole property, especially the front yard to eat the ticks. I'm at a loss what to do with him, crazy dog:) I hate scolding him for doing what I've got him for, protect the chickens.

Grizzly is part Heeler right? Heh... that's a tough one. Hard to convince the dog to let them have a little more freedom.
We had a duck that did that. He was a refuge from the neighbors farm, and wandered over to our place. He must have been somebodies Easter duck, and they dumped him off. He would come up behind any unsuspecting visitor and run his beak up their leg! It was so funny to see the reaction. We had a rat terrier at the time, and he would not leave that poor dog alone. Both of them would go into the pea patch and pick the peas off the plants. We had to fence the garden in to keep those two out. :0
Yes, I posted a picture last year to Hair when I bought it. They must not make them anymore. Not on their web site.
