LOL! Did I not sound like a goober or what?! I guess I was thinking that I was showing too many rocks and not enough horses. I'm such an idiot. I definately would starve to death trying to make a living as a documentarian.
I know what borium is. I saw it put on shoes of the horses we use to ride at that ranch.

I'm ready to commit murder or suicide one. I went to Jenny's to burn some music on to a CD. I was really excited to get home sit in my chair and listen to it, cranked up loud (couldn't do that down there with the baby:), and my %$#^ DVD player has kicked the bucket....Mack has my CD player down at the building, so now I have this wonderful CD of music I like and can't listen to it.

Well Darn! You'll have to reposses your CD player from Mack. Get him to bring it home with him this evening if he's still there.
Actually I just caught him and he was there so he is bringing it back home. But that means it will be tomorrow before I can "really" listen to it:)

No problem. I figured that's what happened. I've been known to have bouts of "Premature Post-ulation" too. ;o)
Horse shoer has been and gone... told him about Bay being lame last week and he did hoof testers on him and decided he might have been, might still be, a little bit laminitic.
I said I'd given him Bute last weekend and he was better, but had not given him any yesterday or today. He said stay with the Bute longer.... every day for awhile, till the grass is a little less vigorous.
No sign of laminitis in the pony. If someone was gonna founder on grass, it should be her... But I guess not necessarily.
Bay was visibly hurting to stand on one foot barefoot while he worked on the other one. I gave him 2 tabs of Bute right then. I don't know what to think really...
Also talked a little about NB shoes... he said, "My horse shoes are basically the same thing once I roll the toe, and he showed me how when he's done hammering the shoe is not flat, but tips up in the front when placed 'bottom down' on a flat surface. That may be true, but they don't look the same. He thinks they're just a trendy thing. That's sortof what I thought he'd think.
I'm sorry Bay seems off again. You have to exray to be sure about laminitic right?

I dunno. The thing is, he didn't seem off except when he was standing there barefoot, on gravel, while he did the other foot. Mark could tell, and just put two nails in to get the pad back on, did the other one and came back. Then he could stand there just fine... I said "Is it just ouchy soles because he's had the pad on? He said "He has all kinds of sole there, his foot is good and hard... "Well then why is he better with the pad on?"

It's all just such a mystery to me, that's the frustration. He trotted out when I turned him loose.
Just curious. Did you get any impression of how much actual knowledge he had about the NB shoes? Please don't get me wrong, I still feel like I know nothing:), but I also think sometimes people in a specialized field is not real open minded to advancements in their field. Does that make sense.
I now think my farrier really doesn't know all the finer points that go along with NB, he just nails them on to keep his customers happy. That's the reason I'm learning all I can about them. I'm going to have to teach him:).

I did notice back when I tried the barefoot thing, that just because they had alot of sole, and their hoof was good and hard, that was no guarantee that they wouldn't be ouchy.

I'm sorry to hear about Bay still being a bit off but I'm glad that the pads seem to help him. Your farrier's response to the NB shoes being a trendy thing is understandable. A lot of traditionally schooled farriers think that. But the shoes themselves aren't necessarily the main thing, although they do help. It's getting the breakover point and the heels where they need to be. I think I've told you that you could use a regular rim shoe and with some anvil work accomplish about the same thing. The NB shoes just eliminate the need for the anvil work. But fitting an NB shoe like you would any other shoe isn't going to accomplish the same thing. I know you're skeptical and you're frustrated and I don't want to preach, although I know I already have, and I know you like your farrier and feel like he does a good job for Bay, so I'm going to get off my box and leave it there.
Well y'all, I gotta head on out to Auto Zone. My Jeep croaked yesterday evening, just as I pulled into my in-law's driveway. At first we thought it was the A/C compresser that locked up, but then my FIL decided it was the bearing on the idler pully. He took it off and the darned thing was nearly fused. The bearings were literally melted. Of course it ate up the fanbelt when it went. I'm fairly sure I have an Automotive Guardian Angel because every time I've had catastrophic engine trouble like this, and believe me I've had a bunch driving a car with 285,000 miles on it, I've always been somewhere safe. It's downright uncanny. I'm hoping that all it will take is a new bearing and fanbelt and I'll be back on the road. Y'all take care and I'll talk to ya tomorrow!
I didn't get the impression he had really studied the NB method much, no. I think he's in a groove, or a rut, of what he knows, and while I think he is aware of all the talk on the internet (he nods and smiles when I say I've seen such and such about NB, or barefoot people, on the internet) he's not really interested in it.
Keep in mind, he isn't really sure Bay has ever had Navicular... he thinks he just has some typical arthritic symptoms in all his joints for his age.
Heh... later on he talked a little bit about other 'difficult' customers, and how I was his favorite customer because I had the right amount of horses, they behave and never tried to kill him, I never bounce checks, and my location is convenient. I said... so it's not personal, it's that I'm ~convenient~?
I do like him, but he's not the most forward thinking. If Bay holds up this next month and improves, I have no reason to change. When he was leaving, he was patting Bay and talking about the Bute, and watching his grass, and trying to make me feel better about the summer's riding, and he said, well, let me know when you want to buy another horse. I've got a couple really good ones. I said "I can't, not yet. My shoer said I have just the right amount of horses now"
Well, I know exactly where you're coming from. I did NOT want to have to learn about shoeing. I put my horses in the hands of the farrier and trusted him He didn't really DO anything wrong, just as your's hasn't, but he also doesn't have a vested interest in the horse like I do. It's like homeschooling the kids. NO one care about them like I do. If I want the best for them it's up to me. That's how I'm starting to view my horses. I"VE got to figure what's best, no one else will. Not vets, not farriers.

I hope. You really have to want to do this. I almost threw the application in the trash a couple of times.
