I just cannot believe the trees you have.
That's a pileated Woodpecker. They are an endangered species. I see them around here once in a while.
Becky
Thank you:) Frog, the Elvis post is exactly what Jenny says about him when he turns his lip up:) Hair, LOL, I just realized why you mentioned a warning about babies:)
Becky
Thanks:)
Becky
Jeez Louise! That ain't a woodpecker, that's an airplane! Just how big IS that sucker?!
I'm still looking at these pictures of the trees. That is just incredible. You may not get me in the house if this is outside your house. That is just sooooo cool.
Becky
It took me a while too, but I finally got it. Veeeeery clever, Hair!
Pileated Woodpeckers are 16 1/2 inches long. They are the largest species still around.
They are the ones Woody was designed after:)
Becky
So you both thought I was nuts ;~D
Those trees ARE really cool! I like the way they have all that cool green moss hanging in them. But I don't think I'd like to have to live with the REASON why they have all that cool green moss in them.....RAIN.....ALL THE TIME! ;o)
That's just fine! We'll give ya a cot there under the woodpecker ;~D
It ain't so bad... till the moss is growin' behind my ears...
Yep, I was thinking "Warning labels? On a BABY? I ain't never seen no warning label on no baby. Maybe I'm supposed to turn 'em upside down and it's on the bottom or something". ;o) Baby expert I'm not!
I can see where that could happen...Moss behind your ears...moss between your toes...You could be mistaken for an Ent if you're not careful!
That would be just fine. The trees are incredible, AND seeing one of those woodpeckers that close would just be icing on the cake:)
Actually, I thought you comment on the warning about babies was some vague reference about your not being keen on having one of your own....something from the past I couldn't remember. LOL...I'm the one that must be nuts:)
Becky
Hopefully he'll stick around for you :~D He's certainly finding ~something~ he likes in that tree, he's been at it two days.
I'll bet "He" is a "She" and she's drilling a nest hole. It's about that time of year. Now THAT would be really cool to be able to watch, a whole nest of little pecker-woods!
Does that mean I can't take the tree down?
Not if you take it down BEFORE there's little pecker-woods in it. ;o)
I was just reading about those woodpeckers. They will excuavate their own nesting cavities. Does that spot face south, they prefer south facing openings. There was also diagrams to build a nesting box for pileated woodpeckers! Wow, I wouldn't have thought a bird that size would have nested in a man made box. They have to be anchored tho, 20 feet up. Anyway, I found that very interesting.
Becky
I would think he was after bugs in the rotten tree. That is their main source of food. That is so cool that (s)he keeps coming back.
