Ultimately what I would like to do is find a sound system/recording that replicates a thunderstorm. I always sleep well in thunderstorms so perhaps if I could replicate that.
I take 3 3mg melatonin and 3 generic TylenolPM (Equate brand from Walmart.)
I've become "used" to them so they take a little over an hour to take effect. I'm asleep by 10:15 every night. Awake at 7 am everyday.
For someone not used to them, simply taking one or two of the 3mg melatonin does the trick. On the shelf at Wal-Mart and any other pharmacy or food store.

I take 1 Tylenol PM every once in a while. It really works. I sleep for 8 hours and wake up feeling great.
I was unable to nap during the day, regardless of how tired I was, until I enrolled in Latin in college. Without fail, I'd fall asleep every time I cracked the book to study. The only other thing that will reliably put me to sleep is takeoff on a commercial airliner. I'm usually cutting z's just before or right after liftoff, and don't usually wake until right after the beverage service passes me by.
The downside of that idea is that before too long you'll find yourself attending many, many AA meetings.
Precisely.
Though, my wife has told me she likes to be at least woken up and asked before I start.
Drink beer. Only reason I'm up in the middle of the night. ;o)
I was a diesel mechanic in the navy. One of my jobs was taking care of the emergency diesel generators. Over the years, as long as there was a background noise I could sleep, but whenever we "dropped the load", the dead silence woke me up. Most likely as response to the soon to follow emergency. Since then, I cannot sleep without the TV or radio on. Give that a try. In the past fifteen years, I've gradually moved from radio to New Age Classical. It's soothing and rather nice to sleep to.
I am completely serious when I say this. Pray. Count your blessings. Think of the people that you know that could benefit from an answered prayer and ask for it for them.
A few years ago, I was in a terrible place. To me, sleeping was the only thing that got me through a few more hours of what I was dealing with. So I would try to say a rosary. I usually got into about 20 Hail Mary's and soon enough, I was awake after 8 hours sleep. Still in the same place, but at least I had 8 more hours down.
Drink beer? Then you have to get up to go to the bathroom again. But, you are sure in a good mood while there.
A sure fire cure for insomnia. Could cause nightmares, though.
Four hours only! I'd be a zombie. I need at least six, but 7 to 7.5 is ideal for me during the week.
And its more fun for us guys to pee. ;o)
I tossed and turned for over an hour then eventually fell back asleep.
Sometimes I get up and browse FR.
But it is best for me to remain in bed. I learned this tip from a tabloid in 1976. Try to remember to relax your tongue. It helps relax the rest of you. When you are laying there trying to sleep your tongue is usually pressing quite firmly on the roof of your mouth. Just relax it and let in fall down. Sounds crazy I know.
Another thing I read about is virtual dreaming. You get into sleep position and try to keep your eyes closed. Vividly imagine a nice dream including all the minute details. Like if you are laying in a hammock in the tropics (I imagine the Seychelles) imagine the sound of the wind high up in the palm trees, the waves, even buzzing insects, etc. Or if going through your dream house imagine every detail and like touching the lovely dishes, towels, etc.
These help me. Good luck to you.
Sorry, colorcountry. I thought you were a guy (not that you sounded like one). Well, hope you got some rest after all.
