Robert suggested in 1077 to his father that he should become the ruler of Normandy and Maine. When the king refused, Robert rebelled and attempted to seize Rouen. The rebellion failed and Robert was forced to flee and established himself at Gerberoi. William besieged him there in 1080 but his mother, Matilda of Flanders, managed to persuade the two men to end their feud. I hate it when families bicker....

My History Professor told the class that "Curthose" was a contemptuous reference to the lad's short legs.
That should not have caused the awkward political mismaneuvers, however. Maybe it was a result of inbreeding.

I beg to differ on that point. Hollywood was quiet, but not silent.
The internet gossip columns were talking about it as far back as last spring. Of course, it was an afterthought to the main thrust of the articles, which was the pairing of Heath Ledger with the woman who is now the mother of his child. (I don't know whether or not they married between last spring and now.) It was no hush-hush secret.
