Wow. Not much said by the usual snide Bush Bashing gossips in the press today about the White House dinner last night for Prince Charles and his mistress the Dutchess of Cornwall. It sounds like a lovely evening with a creative menu from the new executive chef, Cristeta Comerford. The guest list was a varied and interesting mix of official DC, friends and family. Nancy Reagan was escorted by Merv Griffin. Some cabinet members, past and present, a handful of ambassadors but the list and the only members of congress invited were Bill Frist, Dennis Hastert, Joe Lieberman and Jane Harmon. Condi Rice was there with her frequest date, Gene Washington. General Russel Honore and the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace was there along with others from the arts, sports world including YoYo Ma, Lynn Swann, Tom Watson, Oscar de la Renta, Chuck Leavell (the Rolling Stones keyboard player), Herman Wouk but Kelsey Grammer was the only Hollywood star invited.

The Guest List

The menu:

Celery Broth with Crispy Rock Shrimp
Newton Chardonnay "Unfiltered" 2002

Medallions of Buffalo Tenderloin
Roasted Corn
Wild Rice Pancakes
Glazed Parsnips and Young Carrots
Peter Michael Pinot Noir "Le Moulin Rouge" 2002

Mint Romaine Lettuce with Blood Orange Vinaigrette
Vermont Camembert Cheese and Spiced Walnuts

Petits Fours Cake
Chartreuse Ice Cream Red and Green Grape Sauce
Iron Horse "Wedding Cuvée" 2002

They look very handsome as usual but I do wish Laura would ditch that style of dress and do away with the bows. The dress is by Oscar de la Renta and is a beautiful fall color but it isn't in the least bit flattering, in fact, it makes her look matronly.

He had to ask ?

Military wives tell Bush: Give Laura diamonds
Tue Oct 25, 2005 6:57 PM BST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - What should the leader of the United States buy his wife for sticking with him through 28 years of marriage?

"Diamonds," was the resounding advice given by military wives at a luncheon on Tuesday where President George W. Bush asked what he should give first lady Laura Bush for their anniversary on Saturday.

"The best decision I ever made was marrying Laura in Midland, Texas," Bush said to applause.

"Some question whether or not it was the best decision she ever made," he said to laughter.

"Speaking about decisions, I got another decision to make, and maybe after lunch you can help me. And that is: What do I get her on the 28th anniversary?"

To which the shouted response was the gemstone of romance -- diamonds.

"Never mind," Bush joked. "Sorry I asked."

I was talking to them tonight about what they want for Christmas and one of them wants a toy gun. Normal request for a 7 year old boy, right? Wrong! Gun = bad.

A fake gun or bb gun was always at the top of my Christmas list. Luckily my parents and Santa complied... out of thousands of shots taken, I may or may not have killed one chipmunk. (I did assassinate many mail boxes and trash cans with no obvious damage to the targets). I never shot a real gun until I joined the Air Force, and eventually got a marksmanship medal!

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the
1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!
---

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they
carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored
lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we
rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took
hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick-up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but
we weren't overweight because
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back
when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts or soap box racers out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the
bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no
99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no DVD's, no surround sound, no cell
phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and  the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We spent the summer with no skin on our knees and elbows from falling on pavement.  And we survived. (Didn't you hate iodine and alcohol!)

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, called them by name in the driveway or just walked in and talked to them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't
had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers
and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
 HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the good luck to grow up as real
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
and while you are at it, forward it to your kids or grandkids so they will know how brave their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!
