Yeah. I didn't see that she had already bought him. I guess it's never to late to teach them who's boss, huh? :') Are all the "lil boys" a challenge?

Got this today, and it was perfect timing for me (figuring out taxes, vet bills, etc.)

"A Letter From Your Horse" (original version):

When you are tense, let me teach you to relax. When you are short tempered, let me teach you to be patient.

When you are short sighted, let me teach you to see. When you are quick to react, let me teach you to be thoughtful.

When you are angry, let me teach you to be serene. When you feel superior, let me teach you to be respectful.

When you are self absorbed, let me teach you to think of greater things. When you are arrogant, let me teach you humility.

When you are lonely, let me be your companion. When you are tired, let me carry the load.

When you need to learn, let me teach you. After all, I am your horse.

And now, the REAL story...

When you are tense, let me teach you that there are lions in them thar woods, and we need to leave NOW!

When you are short-tempered, let me teach you how to slog around the pasture for an hour before you can catch me.

When you are short sighted, let me teach you to figure out where, exactly, in the 40 acres I am hiding.

When you are quick to react, let me teach you that herbivores kick MUCH faster (and harder) than omnivores.

When you are angry, let me teach you how well I can stand on my hind feet, because I don't feel like cantering on my right lead today.

When you are worried, let me entertain you with my mystery lameness.

When you feel superior, let me teach you that, mostly, you are the maid service.

When you are self-absorbed, let me teach you to PAY ATTENTION. Remember? I told you about those lions in them thar woods?

When you are arrogant, let me teach you what 1200 lbs. of "YAHOO LETS GO!" can do when suitably inspired.

When you are lonely, let me be your companion. Let's do lunch. Also, breakfast and dinner.

When you are tired, don't forget the 600 lbs. of grain and 150 bales of hay that need to be unloaded.

When you are feeling financially secure, let me teach you the meaning of "Veterinary Services."

When you need to learn, hang around, babe. I'll learn ya."

- Sincerely Your Horse

Yes, all little boys are a problem, especially if they aren't gelded. One of the major reasons we imprint all of our foals as soon as they are born. They learn 1) nothing we do to them will hurt them and 2)we are stronger than they are, so they will do what we ask.

That serves very well when they get to 1200lbs. :)

I had a horse, bought as an unbroke four year old, that thought it was a game to charge people and chase them over the fence. I didn't know about this cute habit until after I bought him. The first time he got me over the gate, the second time I went in with a 2x4 :).

He was a smart horse and decided that there were other fun things to do that didn't involve me. I didn't even hit him with the 2X4, just threatened to do so when he charged.

They are smart , aren't they? My husband used to carry a pvc pipe around the dumb ole cow. He actually had to use it though.

:) They struck me as so appropriate today. I'm sitting around wondering why on earth I spend every cent I have on horses, with all the headaches they entail.

I'm sure I'll feel more positive tomorrow and even find some redeming value in them when the year's first baby hits the ground next month.

That's the thing, horses are very smart so they learn appropriate behavior quickly. They also learn bad habits quickly. :) Cows aren't as smart. I've never been a fan of cows and really only like them in the freezer.

Tell me about it. My stable bill has been going up . Everytime I write that check, I get all down. My husband isn't interested anymore and gave Okie back to me so I have two horses now. It's sad when I think one needs to go. I had decided on Okie and then I look at him and worry about someone treating him right and Sarah Lee..she was such a sad case when I got her. So...I guess I'll just continue to grin and bear it caz I keep finding excuses to keep them. Truth is, I enjoy them. I'm thinking about rotating them though caz it's getting to be a pain doing everything twice.

The thing is, the sight of a horse (healthy, happy) really is good for the soul. I do love having cofee in the morning and looking out the window at the horses.

It is a sickness :) I am sure. I think about where we would be without them - financially secure, no commute to work, able to travel, and wonder why on earth I do this. Then I think about how no one else could possible take care of our kids as well as we do, and how much enjoyment Bob gets out of them, and how wonderful it is to see the new babies - Guess I didn't want to see Hawaii anyway.

Might you be able to lease, or even half-lease one of them to someone at the barn? Maybe there's someone there who'd like to work and show Okie.

Nite ladies. It's been a long day here. Leasing Okie sounds like a good idea. Or maybe 4H kid who wants to ride and show.

Yeah - a 4H girl was what I was thinking to :~D

Beats two board bills and is short of selling outright yet.

I'm working on that. I would free lease to the right person . I've has several inquires. Most are from Mexico though. There is one guy here though that rodeos and thinks he would be a great roping horse and made me an offer last year. I turned it down but I've been thinking about leasing, if he is still interested. Would that be too hard on Okie though? Do they last, doing that kind of stuff?

All hard running sports, if done wrong or done hard, risk injury and breakdown. I might be wrong but roping might be easier on him than other rodeo sports that involve more spins and stress to the joints. My concern would be also how it might affect his temperament. The others on the thread that have more experience with it will know better.

I guess to keep them sound we could just wrap them in bubble wrap, but as flashy as he is, I was thinking of a horse show type.
