The injury occurred the third week of August, 2004. So, it has been over a year now.
Awhile back, I assisted at a tailgate castration of a large stray Rottweiler. (He showed up at the barn and wouldn't leave, he is severely dysplastic in both hips, we figured somebody dumped him when they found out how much the surgery would cost.) One of the little barn rat girls wanted to keep him, her parents said o.k., but he would have to be neutered. So the vet said he'd do it for free, on the spot. So I scrubbed up and held the instruments . . . I was an equine vet. assistant long ago, as a high school summer job.
Actually, wait till she tells you the real punch line... ;~D
Fellow named John McCormack is a vet prof over at UGA -- he got his start as the only vet in a rural Alabama county back in the 60s. His first book is Fields and Pastures New, and it is colorful to say the least. Sort of James Herriot brought up to date, with overalls and a heavy Black Belt accent. There are a couple of sequels, all very good. The account of his visit to a reception held by Gov. George Wallace (in the rounds vehicle because the good car broke down at the last minute) is hilarious.
Hey, I can't read back through 1843 posts to get the punch line!
. . . did they each get one as an hors d'oeuvre? < blecch >
Disgusting huh! :~D
Should we ping vetvetdoug? He's a vet.
Moderately disgusting childbirth story: I had a normal delivery, natural childbirth, but then retained my placenta. They were going to do a D&C but as soon as they administered the anesthetic it bounced out all by itself (I missed the show).
Next morning, my OB - a little, combative, red-headed Irishman with a voice you could hear all down Peachtree Street - came bounding in to the room I was sharing with a delicate young lady of refined sensibilities who was finishing up her doctorate in Theology at Emory (we had interesting talks about her thesis, on the Queens of Judah). He booms out, "What the hell's this I hear about you hoarding your placenta, girl? We can't GIVE the goddam things away!"
I thought my roomie was going to faint.
God I loved that man. He died of a heart attack a couple of years ago in the airport on the way to a medical conference. He was in his 70s but just couldn't quit practice, he always said he'd die with his boots on, and he did.
Sure... Empress too. We've had one other vet on the forum too, but my mind's a blank on the screen name.
Vets called to 1,830 and the surrounding posts.... request for veterinary character information and background for my friend Rose's novel.
Ha! He sounds like a riot!
I think it was empress.... She's the only vet that I can remember posting on the forum.
Heh.... what a strange thing to say! ROTFL
He sortof reminds me of one of my flight instructors, though... a brash, loud, ex military guy who referred to my room-mate as "You mean Walker? Why, she's so short her eyes are in her mouth!"
Don't ask me why! I can't explain it.
So did I . . . but gave it up when I started law school, couldn't get enough time to keep sharp. Never got further than private SEL and my instrument rating - did pass the Commercial written but never took the flight test.
I did.... That's what I went to college to do.
I have Commercial, Instrument Single and Multi, and Flight Instructor, now expired.
I taught a little, not nearly long enough to move up, ended up taking our rainy winters off flight instructing and doing temp work on the side that ended up making more money, and one spring I didn't go back. It doesn't take very long being out of it before it's hard to go back. It's hard to make enough money here to survive flight instructing (if it's raining, we don't make money), and those friends that were truly committed to flying went to Alaska and flew bush. ~sigh~
Many of my flight school friends ended up in the Airlines... including my short friend "Walker". Sometimes I regret not staying in it, but most of the time I'm pretty content with the way life turned out, too.
Someday I'd like to get and stay current enough to at least make it a hobby.... But how many expensive hobbies can a gal like me expect?
I really prefer the horsies to the birds . . . although I miss flying all around the Southeast and the Caribbean, it's just harder to do with two kids! (Although my dad did it -- he was able to use his aircraft in business and write it off, I never could wangle that because my job didn't require any travel to speak of.)
I wouldn't give up what I've got to go back to it.
The vet looks like he's helping Bob deliver a baby:')
Darn, if I don't feel like I'm coming down with a cold too. It may just be because I'm back on my low carb diet. It makes me achy but never snfiffy before. I've only p/o about 5 people today and the day "aint" over yet. I have to go back to an inservice at 7:30.
So you're cranky when you're sick eh? ;~D
