Well DARN! Don't that just P!ss you off. I let mine lapse too, but they aren't that bad to check them around here. I would think that with it being just 4 days expired that they might be a little more lenient with you. Of course I don't know how far of a drive it is for you and whether or not you want to risk being turned away.

That sounds alot like the method I've been taught to use when loading a reluctant horse.

Cindy's Okie had only been loaded about 3 times when I got him. I wanted so bad to kick Celia in the butt for that. And also for trying to load him several times then giving up.

It was a 6 hour battle for Charlie and I and 2 diffent trailers before we got him in. I learned alot that day tho.

We got a long flexible pole, ran the lead thru the window and held the end then just tapped him at the top of his tail. Light taps as long as he stood still, but when he would go back, sidewise or up, he got thumped really good non stop till he got back to where he had been. Once he was back to where he was the light tapping started again. If he went forward we stopped for a minute patted and prasied him, then started again. After that long the spot we were light tapping was sore, and he finally figured out, finally, going in was more pleasant then running backwards or rearing up. It just took so long.

...It just took so long...

That's the deal, they try to out wait you and you just gotta hang in there and take the time that it takes without losing your temper, and that's really hard for most people. It sure is for me.

Persistance is one of the things that I've learned from the Parelli stuff. He's got this saying, and it's a little hokey because he likes to recite these big long things where nearly every word starts with a "P", but it goes like this..."Passive Persistance in the Proper Position Produces Perfect Performance".

Hey y'all, check this out! I was just browsing and found this pic of a plane getting struck by lightning. All I could say was "Holy $h!t"...

If you want to shorten a mane, you pull it. Don't take scissors to it. I'd leave it be.

WOW! I wouldn't have wanted to be in that plane! I am watching the breaking news of a car with a possible bomb in it being checked out in Washington DC. : ( 2 white males are being detained and questioned.

What Becky said :)

PS: If it's fear of that particular trail, try to figure out what it is. Has anyone else ridden him?

I'm fine. We are going to start locking our saddles up. Everything else already is. The responsibility to check was mine though. I even picked up one and put it over the horn to remind me to cinch some more and just didn't notice. I was getting worried though. I thought something was wrong with me:').

Don't you know that was a rush. We were flying to Nevada one night and had to stop in Colorado. There was a bad storm happening and we were put on hold. We didn't get hit but it was sacry. Scary and beautifully fascinating.

Well, I went out today and had a bit of a hesitation on Waylon's part but I kept turning him and cueing him to go forward and he was OK. We rode on the trail and even saw a deer which didn't spook him. I've figured out though that he is barn sour. Everytime we would near the barn is when he would start acting up and refusing to move. I'm going to work with him again as soon as this damn rain stops.

I used to get off of him in front of the barn. Tonight I got off of him in the round pen and I think I will do that in the future. What you said about making the end the most pleasant part makes sense. Thanks for the advice.

Good job. They do like the barns don't they?:') If he went ok for you today, there really might have been something out there too though.

Yeah probably. When I brush them, I take the rubber curry comb and give them a good brushing in the crease of their neck behind the ears. Both of them will actually brush themselves. If I stop those heads start bobbing.

Good deal. Glad it all worked well for you.

I'll just repeat one more time, bringing them in and tieing them up and leaving them for a while is a good way to break barn sourness. They don't like doing that and if they have to at the end of the ride, they are not so anxious to get back.

Good news that he went better today without turning this into a major fight. Maybe he goes better the further you are from feeding time. If you're going to be going on a lot of late afternoon rides, perhaps feeding him a lunch and putting off his night feeding time till long after dark would improve his afternoon mood.
