I saw the new version and liked Geraldine McEwan. I saw the Joan Hickson version years ago when it first aired, and would have to see it again to make any comparisons.

I grew up in the deep South and everyone used the word. No one really thought about it. One did not use it in polite company tho even back then.
I remember reading news stories in the 70's and maybe 60's in which they would quote Southerners as saying "Nigra", apparently indicating they couldn't pronounce the word right or whatever.
In my entire life, I have never heard anyone actually say "Nigra".
