On Fri. after the welcome meeting we saddled up and everyone made a run so the instructors knew where each of us was at. They were supposedly taking notes on each of us, and I beleive the were. When we got our individual instruction the instructors had notes they looked at before each of us went.
On the Fri. run no one really knew each other yet, so there wasn't much cheering and hooting going on. Martha was in the annoucers booth and she'd say stuff to each rider, especially the kids who had run aways, and there was quite a few of them.
By Sun. everyone had gotten to know the people in their groups and we were all cheering for each other. When the lady who was the beginner rider finally got her horse to lope we were all yelling and clapping:). It was fun.
Alot of the barrel racers I know use twisted wire snaffles. This bit I bought was designed by the Joseys. I wondered if they were just selling me. But I looked at all the pictures in the trophy room of her runs, and in almost all of them her horse had this bit on. So she really does use it herself. The call it their "Millon dollar bit", because so many barrel riders have used it and won.
I've run at the arena in our town and been timed at a playday. Never on Harley tho. I think I ran a 20 something a few years ago on Rusty. Our arena is about the same size as this one.

I wanted to order them tonight but I guess I'll wait til tomorrow. If these kids would go to sleep I would go out there now:') My DIL testing tomorrow and they are sleeping over.
Was it hot? Did you have the same kind of changeable weather you've had at home, with heat and humidity and thunderstorms all together?
The arena looks dry.
I'm glad you ended up feeling good about Harley and got so many kudos about him. Did you see people and horses that really shouldn't be running barrels? Or is it something that was good for everyone, whether they'd ever be competitive or not? Were there any Arabs there or just QH types ;~D
It was miserably hot and humid there. I really worried about the horses. Especially Dot. When we first got there the stalls that we were asigned to had walls that I could barely see over then wire mesh from there to the ceiling. We got them in, gave them water, and hay, then left to set up camp. About an hour later we walked down there to check and Dot had laid down. We got her up and she was solid sweat.
Turned out she was fine. I think she was just tired of standing after the trailer ride, laid down and with the solid walls she was where there was no air circulation. We asked to be moved to the more open stalls and she was fine. She sweats alot more then the other two did. But then so does her dad:), and sweating is a good thing. It still worried me tho.
All three of them were tired on Sat. I'm glad we didn't come home on Sun, and they got to rest before the ride home. Alot of the people left Sun. There were 2 girls from Georgia, the had a 20 hour trip. We heard that on the trip up they didn't get the horse out once. They did give them hay and water. One of them was not doing well on Fri. and the lady didn't ride at all, just came and watched. I hope the horse makes it home OK.
The arena was actually in very good shape. It did get dry by the end of the day, but they watered it every night and tractors worked it after every 8 runs. It was actually the best arena as far as the dirt that I've seen.

Glad Dot did ok. Keep those pictures coming! It's really neat to see barrel pictures. Really hot and humid here too, and it has been for the past few days. We got a couple of rumbles of thunder this afternoon, but nothing came of it.
I heard from a vet who used to be the vet for the Olympic team that the most common problem from trailering horses long distances is that they'd get phemonia when you got there. That it was vital for a horse to be able to lower his head every few hours in order to clear his lungs. They often travel loose in box stalls, but he said on any long trip to get them out and let them graze on the ground. Interesting to remember.
I hope she DOES ok:') She's testing with the state for her nursing assistant certification.

I love the trailer that you hauled in by the way. Very classy.
Interesting. I never knew that. I would assume that they would get stocked up, or could colic, but I didn't know that they could get pneumonia.
Yeah she kind of got ahead of herself. She plans to go to nursing school but she has to work in the meantime. She took her CNA class and then signed right up for medication aide but even though she has a 4.0 she can't get certified until she passes her C.N.A. exam. Tommorrow she is testing for her CNA, has a nursing interview at 2pm and then medication classes tomorrow night. I don't know how she is keeping everything straight.
I think it's something most people don't think about till they're told, I think.
