Good day, WCG & Norm. I've got an interesting tidbit of info for you. The brother-in-law of Eliot Spitzer, the current Dem NY attorney general who's running for governor, is Jim Wall, who worked for the late Randy Dorton at HMS and has now taken over the Director of Engineering job, replacing Randy.
Because of his family connection to HMS, it seems that Spitzer is a huge Jeff Gordon fan. This may explain why Jeff prefers to keep his right-leaning politics to himself. Rick Hendrick was pardoned by Bill Clinton, and now we find that Jim Wall's brother-in-law is a big-time NY Dem. Here's an article from www.gordonline.com:
NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 8)- - One of the biggest Jeff Gordon fans in political circles threw his hat into the ring in the New York Governor's race for 2006. At first glance you wouldn't think of Eliot Spitzer as being a NASCAR fan. But New York's attorney general spends most Sunday afternoons like so many of you -- camped out in front of his television set watching the #24 car on the race tracks.
"I've got three pictures on the wall in my office: Bill Clinton and me; the federal judge I was law clerk for and me; and Jeff Gordon and me," Spitzer said. "I tell people who come to my office that if they can identify all three pictures they can get what they want. So far, nobody in New York has identified Jeff Gordon."
Right about now you're probably asking yourself how an attorney who grew up in the Bronx, attended Princeton University, and Harvard Law School became a huge Jeff Gordon fan. You could say he married into it. Twenty years ago he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review, where he met his wife Silda, a native of North Carolina and also a Harvard Law School graduate. Silda's brother, Jim Wall, was working during the summer for a racing engine company in North Carolina called Competition Engines. Wall's boss was the late Randy Dorton. After finishing up his master's degree at NC State University, Wall went to work for Dorton again -- this time at Hendrick Motorsports. Wall has been one of the key players on the engineering side of all nine of Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR championships. Following Dorton's untimely death in 2004, Wall became director of engine engineering for HMS and is responsible for the engine program. Spitzer has met Gordon several times over the years due in large part to his brother-in-law, and he just might be the most influential openly JG fan in politics. He hopes to take the next step in 2006 and ascend to New York state's highest office.
