If you compare with 2000, you can see a massive amount of Dem support in the triangle between, roughly, Virginia to Louisiana to Michigan has dried up... there used to be a nearly solid line of Dem support from southwest of Memphis, TN all the way to Erie, PA, and all that's there now are a few isolated dots.

Texas is less blue, as are some other states.

Looks red to me.

Just how this map relates to a 51 - 48 popular edge is a testament to the psychological effects of millions of people cramming themselves into cities.

I guess they wanted a 3rd color in there so it wouldn't look so clear.

My interpretation is that it marks the counties that were 10000 votes for one candidate, 10001 votes for the other.

As a result, it shows that there are an awful lot of counties out there that have at least 5% more Bush votes than Kerry votes.
