If you compare with 2000, you can see a massive amount of Dem support in the triangle between, roughly, Virginia to Louisiana to Michigan has dried up... there used to be a nearly solid line of Dem support from southwest of Memphis, TN all the way to Erie, PA, and all that's there now are a few isolated dots.

Just how this map relates to a 51 - 48 popular edge is a testament to the psychological effects of millions of people cramming themselves into cities.

I guess they wanted a 3rd color in there so it wouldn't look so clear.My interpretation is that it marks the counties that were 10000 votes for one candidate, 10001 votes for the other.
As a result, it shows that there are an awful lot of counties out there that have at least 5% more Bush votes than Kerry votes.
