I know all horses have them, I thought maybe people's word for them varied.... prolly does. ;~D
Bay's peel off very easy in the front... the ones in back are harder. If they won't peel off dry, wet them down and do it when you bathe them. They soften up. If they are real bad, your farrier can clip them off.
I take Bay's down to the skin level while bathing. They have no feeling in them, it can hurt if you are trying to pry them off and it pulls at the skin.
Your post raised a question: How long till we should ride Misty now?
Ho Boy! Forget about the spawning! I don't know whether to be happy or cry.The horses are full of themselves today. Sarah Lee being led out of the barn and jumped back when she stepped over the rope on the ground. I got onto her ass and made her turn around and walk back out again. The owner there and said "she's just coming from a dark to a light area and it spooked her" I told her I didn't care because I wasn't going to have her doing that because she might try it while I was on her. I found out what "frisky" meant last week too. A teenage boy that works at the stable has been riding her for me. Evidently when he put her into a canter the other day she bucked a few times. I'm happy that the owner believes me now. She said "I believed you" I told "un uh. No you didn't. Admit it" and she just smiled. This is supposed to be good that we know why and how to correct it. She said the rider had slacked the reins and wasn't on guard either. She told me when it's cold, and she has been cooped up in the barn awhile (senerio sound familar?) I need to lunge her first until she gets older. The boy doing this and having no problems with her now. He did tell me that I have "got" to canter her. He says she has the smoothest seat.... (rolling eyes) Horses. grrr.

Yes, as a matter of fact, that is one of the few things I did know about horses.
Sugar doing ok? Did they "go out" with Lighting at the same time?
How long has in been since she's been ridden? If she's been worked up until nearly the end and is in pretty good shape, she can go back to doing what she did before pretty quickly. I'd give her a week. If she hasn't been ridden much, I'd start out very light, and you need to just ride there in the same paddock as the babe, and leave the babe loose with her, they can't now be separated. If you have a separate arena where you ride that is safely enclosed, she can go there when the babe can lead well enough to follow along to the new enclosure. I'd wait for that until she has some experience with fencing before moving her. Right now momma is probably intervening to keep her safe from the fence, and the baby can't see real well yet.
Word of caution when you do go to ride... sometimes the babies find this fascinating and may paw and kick at you.

Yes, they were in the same field. We got Misty and Lightening on Christmas eve last year, and put them into the same field (the only one we had at the time). Lightening found his purpose in life within about 10 minutes of unloading from the trailer. Apparently it didn't work, because they were at it again in January. We got Sugar in the first part of January, and Lightening introduced himself to her immediately upon her arrival. I didn't see anymore "activity" after that, so I'm assuming Sugar is about ready too.
We've been doing the same thing. Guess we'll get it right in a couple of days or so.

Well, I think I need to change my name here - I just haven't decided what to - maybe fish :) I just purchased (read rescued) two miniature horses, a filly eight months old and a gelding 2yrs old. Neither of them even remotely resemble an appaloosa.
Unless Misty is really accustomed to being ridden and you are only going to ride her a little, don't. You don't want her getting upset or hot while she's nursing and this is way too early to be seperating momma and baby, even for a few minutes.
Can you post that picture of your horses in blankets? It's buried and I want to see something.

I think we'll wait a while for riding. We didn't get much time to ride her before she started "showing", and after that, we didn't ride her at all. The same is true for Sugar. We will probably concentrate on Lightening for now. He's just green broke, so he needs a lot of work (more than we've had time for lately).
You thought about gelding him?
No, they'll come home tomorrow. Right now they are across the street at the neighbor's house. She's keeping them until we figure out where to put them.
The two year old gelding is a palomino. The little filly looks like she will be a buckskin.
That's good. It will be good for Lightning too - keep his mind busy.
Oh dear.... you must post pictures of the minis! How did this come about?
