her school doeesn't offer drivers ed, so she is going to be doing this all via dad (bc mom is too much of a headcase to deal with it). i grew up in a rural area and she is wishing we lived in one! but i have no problem driving just about anywhere now, that i have lived and driven in DC.

I first learned to drive in a cemetary - a very large one - our daughter had to learn to drive on the narrow roads in PA where there is no shoulder and the land drops off - I wanted her driving on the back roads and she preferred the bigger roads with a shoulder and some lanes painted on them! lol

Yuppers.
That's why driving on interstates IS important with you all the time .. Heck, do it going the other way 0 take her on a trip to Monticello or Petersburg.
(Robt steps off of soapbox lest he fall on his snozzle ...)
After Jean had been driving two-three weeks, we got on 75 north, and got on and off every at exit for the next 15 exits northbound, then turned around and merged on and off of every exit southbound for those same 75 miles ....
When we got finished, she was comfortable merging at high speed with 75 mph truck tires next to her window...

i think xsteen is better on the highway with lanes painted too. she wanted to drive on our back road here, but there are people walking DOGS on it, and cars coming in the opposite direction, people parked on the sides of it, and there is a sizeable DITCH off the right hand side. i think the main drag with lines isn't as scary. People whip along the dirt road and she will have to think quickly there. i know she needs to learn to do that, but maybe not her 5th time behind the wheel!
it will be a HUGE deal when she drives me to the mall and parks in the parking garage there.

I grew up in NYC - I didn't need to drive. I had my license at 17, but rarely used it until I moved to Delaware when I was 22.
My mother had never driven either - it became a race as to who would get their license first....me or her. She won because she wouldn't let me get a Florida license until after I took driver ed back home. Her father taught both her and I to drive the same summer. She never had a DL until I was 16.

well it irks the crap out of me when i drive and xshub feels the need to tell ME what to do. i only speak up to him when it is clear he NEEDS me to tell him what to do... ; )
it is proven that he doesn't think far enough in advance and will not be in the proper lane to exit in enough time. The kids have observed this, as xsteen points out where daddy often fails to exit to take her to school and has to go a different way, that takes longer. so my advice usually entails me saying, shouldn't you be getting into the other lane... see it is VALUABLE advice!

I learned something interesting this weekend........ the home builder that keeps being mentioned in connection with the Swift Boat Vets is the builder in my development! There are two builders here - my home was built by Plantation Homes, the other is Bob Perry. All the homes across the street from me are Perry homes.
I had no idea who the builder was but read an article yesterday about some dems who were protesting in front of his home in Clear Lake........... one of the guys works for NASA and possibly used his work email to organize the demonstration - nice use of our tax dollars.

I have both those types of roads here and while I do prefer the marked with shoulder ones I will take the no shoulder roads any day over taking the highway.
I despise highway driving.

See, you are only being helpful - I offer the same type of help to my husband. I also, sometimes, offer the help that he is possibly riding up the A$$ of the car in front of him and possibly he might want to back off a bit..........

he was NOT mentioning the damn people in bikes, and i just HAD to blurt out that she needed to watch for the dang bikers! I @#^#ing can't stand those bikers who drive on narrow roads where the speed limit is over 25...especially when there's a sidewalk nearby.

I agree that is valuable advice.
I have to do that often with coolbreeze, he'll start talking or just daydreaming and just fly right past where we are supposed to be turning.....drives me nuts
My other pet peeve is him not turning the directional off if it doesn't do it automatically.

i am with you 1000 %, dan. that is precisely what i am talking about. they also do not think that the rules of the road apply to them, despite the fact that they choose to ride ON THE DAMN ROAD when there is a sidewalk right there. i could not be sure that the jack@$$ would not decide to swerve out in front of her to pass a parked car yesterday, not realizing she is a new driver. honest to God, i want Bikes banned from the roadways.
