--two bookcases: books flow from one to the next like the alpha-by-author fiction at your local library.
First, Religion: two different versions of the Bible, 8 Christian doctrine/history, 3 Christian fiction, 1 book of Jewish tradition.
Politics: Bovard, D'Souza, Gingrich, Hamblin, Limbaugh.
General Non-Fiction, Neither Biography nor History.
History.
Biography.
Fiction.
Oversized bottom shelves for oversized books, from Strongs's Concordance to a Soviet military dictionary/encyclopedia to Beethoven symphonic scores to comic strip collections (Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes, etc.)
That sounds pretty well-organized! Some good stuff there. What Christian fiction do you have? D'Souza's articles are interesting, I've been wanting to read some of his books. Those oversized shelves are definitely handy for Strong's!--I have to turn my Strong's sideways to fit it :) That Soviet military book sounds interesting--I like military history but only have a small section so far, I mean to build it. I have a few symphonic scores plus a lot of old sheet music from the 1920s-1940s (that my Grandma passed on) but it's not really stored very well, just in a big pile; I should probably put that in a binder or something one of these days.
I am just home from a little bit of work. I am seething! On the verge of an IT department rant!!! But, before any of you get offended - remember this is the IT department at my college which did NOT think we needed virus protection on lab computers until 2 or 3 weeks ago! Still doesn't think we need it at server level!!!
I am shaking I am so mad! As last quarter was ending - first week of May, I installed some new software and some upgrades on my classroom computers. Knowing that I had the Kid's College class this summer I also installed some files for the kids to use for some projects. I had everything ready for this Kid's College thing 7 weeks ago!!
When I got back to work this past Tuesday I found out that our illustious head of IT had decided that we finally need virus protection on all classroom computers in the college. Even my lab! Imagine that. So, she had this tech that we have already had a lot of trouble with in my lab installing the new virus protection Tuesday and Wednesday.
I was actually wondering what was taking him so long but I didn't ask. He is V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W about everything he does. And rarely answers questions directly if asked. So, I just let him do his job.
I went in today to run through the lessons for the Kid's College next week and discovered that he had removed several of the programs from my classroom computers AND all the files I had installed for teaching the kid's class.
First day of class we were going to do Photoshop. I had photos in files for us to work with. Photoshop is no more on my classroom computers. Yes, I have licenses. Yes, we teach Photoshop in *that* classroom. No, this is not a new thing. He didn't think we needed it so he removed it. And I was there - he coulda asked!!!
Then I discovered that in the 2 days he spent in my classroom he only installed the virus software on 5 (FIVE) of the twenty computers!!!! He removed a lot of software from the rest of 'em but he didn't get the virus protection on them!!! AND he left instructions that the other computers were NOT to be used until he manages to get back to install the virus protection! He is only authorized to do routine work at our campus 2 days a week. Tuesday and Wednesday - but my kid's class starts on MONDAY!!! I checked and there are 8 students signed up - but only 5 computers that we're supposed to be allowed to use!
I am so mad that I am shaking! I know many people are just not responsible with their equipment. I try my level best NOT to be one of those. And I always try to be nice to everybody - and I was nice to them today - but this is ridiculous!!!!!
And the IT head still thinks this is all okay.
There is more... but I will stop now.
Cool! I wasn't reading Spider-Man much then so I didn't know that. Peter David has also written "Star Trek" novels as well as "Spectacular Spider-Man" and "Hulk", right?
Oh we'd talk to ya no matter how much you needed a bath.
I've been over talkin' horses... What's up? - Got kid off to Brazil?
The Soviet book (in Russian, which I can pick out phonetically and understand very very little) I found in a used book shop in Fayetteville, NC in 1992. It was published in 1983 in Moscow by the Voyennoye Izdatyel'stvo* (hmm...remember "samizdat"?): The title is Voyenniy Entsiklopedicheskii Slovar', which I understand to mean the "Big Military Encyclopedia".
*Errors in transliteration are mine alone.
Sorry to hear you had a bad day with that. That sounds like a mess! I will add that to my prayer list.
Wow WN..... That's just a cluster [nope... I have no response for you!]
Or maybe that solution would be better applied to the head of IT.
It's pretty obscure.
Do you recognize the actresses?
Yep, that's true... Peter David has also written his own original novels.
I'm guessing there's a pun there, but I ain't gettin' it... (duhhhhh...)
Then we went to an early dinner, thus this post. I have confused theBear.
Wife just left. The "Mothers of Young Children" are getting together tonite. It will be the first time they've been together since the funeral for their friend last week.
They're gonna grieve over cheesecake...;-)
That book sounds like a nice find! I bet it'd be interesting to compare what's in it with what was in US military encylopedias from the same period.
I had the same concern about *both* my kids starting at about 14. Something about 14.... and then, one of 'em got over it faster than the other one. It's a hellish age to take kids through. But, those years do end... and with all the parental care that you're giving it will come out good.
