Ah. Harley lines up real good:')Look at 3522 and 3521. Not trying to make Okie perfect (I like him just like he is :') but I think his hip point is a little more to the left. He's very muscular and his hips are really wide. I was doctoring a cut today and couldn't find it. He heals so fast. I remember thinking his hips as big as his butt.

Yeah - I think his butt is better than my little quickie demostration shows ;~D Hard to tell in photos of paint horses.

She may know QH and paint names better than I do. Heck... I don't even know any Arab lines that are less than 20 years old!

I'm going to ask for more pictures. Eddie and I are going shopping (probably window)next weekend. He really wants to go check out the adopted horses. I have reservations but it doesn't hurt to look I guess.

He's getting a bath tomorrow. He's really starting to smell sweaty:'). I'll mark the outline with chalk first and take another picture.

Nope..... doesn't hurt to look. You might find some sweet horses out there that appreciate good treatment!

Look at their feet and see which are at some stage of repair for foot neglect. Beyond just malformed shape from a previous lack of trimming, serious long term malnutrition will affect their feet. As a lesson, look for examples of horizontal ridges down the hoof wall, like rings on a tree. that would indicate nutrition that was sporadically rich and then poorer. Bay and the pony will sometimes get a ridge of sporadic growth after spring grass. It means they were close to getting too much. Founder will also show up in their feet long afterwards, the hoof wall will be broken away. All those things will grow out in time and healthy hoof will come in... it will just help perhaps in learning about looking for those signs, and knowing that when you are looking at their feet, you are learning about their health for about the last year as you go from their toe to the hairline

Yeah, Jet Deck is TB race horse blood. And she also has a "Bar" in one of her names which probably goes back to Three Bars. Those are TB I believe. Lot of racing blood. I don't know if it's still done as much, but some time back people got to crossing TB with QH to add speed to the racing QH. They have since figured out that they sacrificed alot of the QH's good points, (calmer, wider built, cow sense). Alot of breeders have gone back to the old foundation bloodlines. Alot of barrel horses will go back to TB bloodlines. Funny thing about Harley is he is totally old foundation QH bloodlines, but has the narrower look, except for his hip, like TB. I'll try to get a picture of him head on tomorrow to show you, he is not wide at all. Even tho Rusty looks smaller, head on (across the chest) Rusty is very wide, but not Harley. Okie was very wide too in the chest and across his back. Personally I like the wider ones, but you know, when I ride Harley he's pretty comfortable because there's not so much to straddle and I feel I've got more of my leg on the horse.

If he's in the sun and standing straight, we should be able to see. ;~D I just loaded some more of Becky's that I could find on the thread.

I am sure Rusty is a lot more symetrically angled when his head's up.

Reba:

Need a straight side shot and not an angled one like this for Rocky: A closer straighter shot would be better...

These angles are just one thing to look for.... next we can do legs. ;~D

This is so interesting. How do you do legs? Oh, Okies front legs a lot longer than they look. It's an optical:')

LOL...from these three it almost looks like REba is the best, and she's the one I like the least.

One other thing, something I look at close at, is, you want their top line, from wither to where their hips connect to their back to be shorter then their underline. You want a long underline. If it's the other way around or close to even you can land up with one that forges. A good test for that is to walk them in dirt and make sure their back feet do not land right on top or even over where their front feet stepped.

I'll look in my conformation book and study a bit before doing legs. ;~D There is another line trick for neck and back proportion too.

This is all in looking for the art form that is most pleasing to the eye. It ~can~ predict which horses will also be strong, sound performers but not always. Bay is a study in bad legs. He is standing pretty straight in the pic above, but he usually stands with the most crooked cow-hocked back legs I've ever seen. His high hocks and knees with long cannon bones that give him his high action should have also led to stress and arthritis in those joints perhaps. But his legs are still clean and sound at 23 after a lifetime of pretty hard work. So - go figure.

I think Rocky and Rusty are just as good too.... Reba's picture was the best for looking at it!

It was alright. Alot of canned music, horrible dress on the bride, it had no straps and like that feather stuff around the top, straight and tight. I thought the grooms and groomsmen tux's nicer then what the girls wore, really sharp looking vests. A long video of the bride and groom's growing up pictures. And did I say alot of canned music:). On a scale of 1-10 me and both my girls rated it about 3:(. But hey, I didn't have to pay the bill, and the food was free, and it was something to do and a Sat. nite.

I'll get some better pictures, but it doesn't matter to me:). It's funny that Harley is coming out the best and he is the only horse I've ever had trouble with with interference. I've been noticing that I don't hear him clicking as much with this new shoe job as I did with the last. Of course the new shoer had the advantage of me telling him that he had some interfernce with the last shoe job. The last time evey step he took I heard click, and he was kicking himself so bad in the opposite pastern that he was coming back bleeding. I had to wrap his back legs till I got those shoes off. Not happening this time.

We went out and ran the horses around a bit.... they needed the exercise and I wanted some new pics.

Look how dry the pasture is.... that one day of rain yesterday was not gonna be near enough.

I like this sequence here of Bay bitin' the pony on the butt:

During the ceremony, believe it or not. It was held in a new church that has two big screens on the walls behind the pulpit. I think during a regular church service they have the words to the songs they sing there instead of hymn books. Anyway, I thought it was a bit much. The bride and groom, during the service each dumped sand, she pink , him blue, into one vase, and then they ALSO did that little ritual where they each take a candle and light a third. Lot of modern rituals. One or the other would have been plenty.
