Santorum isn't running. Specter is, and there is a very good chance that he retires instead of running again. I have it on very good info that fiscal conservative Rep. Pat Toomey from the Allentown area, congressional district-15 will seek this seat if Specter retires.

The addition of Toomey to the Senate would be such an unbelievable great turn of events for Republicans it's difficult to put it into words.

He is one of the very few elected officials who stands up for Social Security reform despite it being the "untouchable" 3rd rail of modern politics.

Pat Toomey is my Representative, and I've come to think the world of him.

I saw him in a debate with Ed O'Brien, and Toomey demolished him.

I'd love to see Pat Toomey in the Senate, and he would be the easy winner if he ran for two reasons: 1. He would carry the Lehigh Valley and the Suburbs easily. 2. Pennsylvania doesn't elect Democratic Senators.

However, Specter really worked hard for Fisher, and has been a team player so far with Bush. If he wants to run again, then he deserves another term. Toomey could take out Rendell in 2006..

Arlen Specter will be chair of the Judiciary after Hatch serves another two years in that capacity. A GOP Senate in 2005 would be all that stands in the way of Specter achieving what he's always coveted.
