How did one crook overpower 2 Cops?
Someone did not search the criminal well enough. There was a third gun present.
Initially, I guessed that the thug wrestled a gun from one of the cops. The last report is that he had another gun that went undetected.
If you read the full article, the suspect had a long history of arrests for violent crimes without any real legal consequences. A soft judge let him roam the streets because he enrolled in community college classes.

Maybe it was two Bettys?
From a comment on the Second City Cop blog:
“Just got this…
Prisoner had the gun on him the whole time
Went into CT scan
Tech saw the gun yelled gun
The offender got the gun
Shot both officers shot at the tech but she survived and then fled.”
He had it secreted on his body, either under one of his fat rolls, or in his “prison wallet”. If it was in his rear end, a search warrant would be needed to do a body cavity search for anything other than the mouth.
It's possible he wasn't frisked properly when they took him into custody after the armed robbery at the store, and escorted him to the hospital. The article says they recovered a hand gun besides the two weapons of the officers. Or, somebody passed him a weapon at the hospital. Maybe the cops were too lax in their security procedures, or if they weren't the arresting officers, assumed those who had arrested him, had already thoroughly searched him for weapons. Sometimes people, even uniformed staff don't communicate like they should.
