A man suspected of shooting two Chicago police officers inside a hospital room Saturday morning had been a fugitive for weeks, had two violent felony cases pending against him, had escaped from electronic monitoring, and was listed as an absconder by the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to court records and multiple government sources.
The officers were standing guard over the man at Swedish Hospital, 5140 North California Avenue, when he gained access to a gun and shot them around 10:50 a.m., CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling said.
On January 11, (Judge) Lyke then gave the man permission to leave home to attend classes at Truman College in Uptown for between five and 11 hours each day, Monday through Thursday, court records show. On January 28, Lyke expanded that window to allow movement for between seven and 16½ hours per day so the man could go to school at Truman, according to a court order.

He had it secreted on his body, either under one of his fat rolls, or in his “prison wallet”. If it was in his rear end, a search warrant would be needed to do a body cavity search for anything other than the mouth.
Whatever D.A. and Judge allowed a cop killer free with an ankle bracelet, both need to be shot.
It's possible he wasn't frisked properly when they took him into custody after the armed robbery at the store, and escorted him to the hospital. The article says they recovered a hand gun besides the two weapons of the officers. Or, somebody passed him a weapon at the hospital. Maybe the cops were too lax in their security procedures, or if they weren't the arresting officers, assumed those who had arrested him, had already thoroughly searched him for weapons. Sometimes people, even uniformed staff don't communicate like they should.
