People like to meet and celebrate, and the need for a White House ballroom as a place for the President to do that is genuine and longstanding. The rituals and expense of formal banquets may seem an indulgence that benefits only the elite, but they are part of what makes governments function, especially in international relations.

Sadly true and only because President Trump is behind it. If the exact same ballroom was built by a D POTUS they’d be singing it praises to the sky. Granted tearing it down might be risky politically once it has been finished. Even though they rendered the southern border wide open they didn’t actually tear down any of the wall that had been built so there is that to go on.
