FWIW, virtually all of the old-earth creationists I know, including myself, don't believe in theistic evolution. Like young earthers we believe the Bible is inerrant, that God made the Earth in the order as listed in Genesis 1 (or at least from the viewpoint of the "surface" of the earth it looked like that sequence), that God uniquely made man in His image and breathed life into man, etc. Most of us believe the creation story in Genesis is literal, not symbolic (again, like young earthers).

The only thing we disagree on is how long ago it was (thousands of years ago vs billions of years ago) and how long it took (a week vs a series of long eras). The few times I hear theistic evolution tends to come from the "church" leaders who promote modern day hedonism.

Mt Saint Helens erupted, they checked the new land made by it two weeks later. Carbon dating said it was formed millions of years ago. This is the science that they use to go against the earth being about 6 thousand years old.

They were millions of years off.

The problem with going to a figurative or allegorical interpretation is that once you go down that road, there is a wide path that leads to error if not apostasy. If the first 11 chapters of Genesis are symbolic, then why are the Gospels or Acts not symbolic? The Hebrew word, yom, means a day of 24 hours (I will concede that there may be some slight variation of a day in the pre-Flood era) and that word is used over 900 times in the Old Testament with the common meaning.

Psalm 90:4, also cited in II Peter 3:8, states that to God, a thousand years is like a day. However, that is from a divine perspective, not a human one. Psalm 90 emphasizes the omnipotence of God. To carry this interpretation into trying to change the concept of "day" is a stretch.

That being said, the doctrine of creation is a secondary one compared to key doctrines like sola gratia, solus Christus, and sola fide.

In Genesis, God created the Sun on Day 4. So the previous 3 days would have to have been “God” days, not 24 hour Earth days, which would argue for a likely substantially longer period of time than understood from this planet. That being the case, the remaining 3 days would also likely have been on “God” time as well. How long, do you suppose, is a single day in eternity?
