There was not anything like a housing shortage during the era when millions of immigrants came from Europe from 1840 to 1920 and when millions of internal migrants came from rural areas, especially those in the South, to the industrial cities. That was because there was a free market in the construction of housing.

I fully support President Trump's efforts to stop illegal immigration and to expel those who are here illegally. Obviously, if millions of illegals leave the country, housing and jobs will become available. The long term issue of housing for the native born and legal immigrants needs a solution.
