UNITED NATIONS — Europe alone is not responsible for helping Ukraine bring an end to its war with Russia, EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas warned Thursday.
That is particularly true when considering President Donald Trump’s pledge to halt the fighting, she said in an interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.
“He was the one who promised to stop the killing,” Kallas said. “So it can’t be on us.”
Her comments come as Ukraine and its allies try to divine the meaning of Trump’s sudden about-face on the war between Kyiv and Moscow.
In a Truth Social post earlier this week, Trump wrote that he believed Ukraine “is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.” He added that this would come with the support of the European Union and NATO, which “can do what they want” with American weapons.
While many European officials welcomed the more supportive shift in tone toward Ukraine, some cautioned that Trump might be suggesting that he intends to pull back American involvement and absolve Washington of responsibility.
There is no NATO without the U.S., said Kallas, the high representative for foreign affairs of the European Commission.
“America is the greatest ally in NATO. So if you talk about what NATO should do, that also means what America should do,” she said.

That’s the top shelf observation that should be figured into the decision-making process!
Don’t worry, hitting EU buying of Russian oil and gas Trump’s next move
Trump has already co opted the EU talking point about paper tiger Russia collapsing due to gas shortages, war driven economic strife and collapsing Russian moral under Ukraine attacks inside Russia and made them his own
Next he is going co opted EU and Congressional demands for tougher sanctions against Russia with a plan to hit countries buying oil from Russia with 500% tariff secondary sanctions
Hardest hit will be China, India and - shockingly( or not) the very EU that is cynically and disingenuously demanding harsh new economic sanctions on Russia
The two biggest saboteurs of the Trump peace initiatives are China and the EU and they will both be the hardest hit by Trumps tough secondary sanctions
Trump has already been negotiating with India and has a proposal to team with Saudi Arabia and a few other oil producing countries to supplant Russian oil supply to India with Arab oil to avoid sanctions
Once again, Trump is several steps ahead of the incompetent and not so bright opposition
Then do it again.
“...nothing to do with our national security.”
That you know of.

Dear EU
Piss off
Yeah, well, you’re going to have to.
Fine. We’ll just make Europe our 51st State.
Russia is a paper tiger. You should be able to handle it.
I don’t doubt you. I look forward to the Euro-whining when it happens. :)
Mo' bettah
EU will get dizzy from all the changing tunes.
Suck it up leaches!
Predictable European whiners and moochers. You want to perpetuate this endless war in your own backyard, deal with it yourself war mongers.
The EU—their mouth has been writing checks their arms can’t cash.
Anyone who knows the name Victoria Nuland knows that you are exactly right.
Watching the Team Trump in action is pure joy.
It’s a master class in playing hardball with slime rodents.
My only regret is that I didn’t get this education 20 years ago when I needed it the most
President Trump has tried repeatedly to end that war.
Neither Ukraine nor Russia appear to want to end it.
It’s the EU’s turn now. I guess they’re getting tired of Lil’ Zelya’s demands for “mah-ney” and stuff.
So are we. Handle it, Europe.
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form. With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option...
